Brit alarmed his phone for 4:15 in the morning. He took off all his clothes, only leaving his boxer. He flopped to the bed and closed his eyes. In a minute, he fell asleep.
Brit opened his eyes. He was in the same field like last time. "Again?" Brit thought to himself. He looked around. He noticed that he was at the base of the hill. The tree's leaves are golden. The trunk, however, looked like any other tree's. Under the tree's shade, he heard a sound. It sounded like someone was stirring a spoon in a teacup. He climbed the hill and saw someone there. It was a man. His hair was lusciously golden. Brit swore if a light shone on this man's hair it would reflect all of the light back. His skin looked smooth. He was wearing what looked like Victorian Era clothing. He sipped his tea while Brit stood there, staring at him. Eventually, the man noticed him. Brit realized he was almost completely naked, if it weren't for his boxers. "Oh my. Wear proper clothing," he waved his teaspoon at Brit. Brit looked down and he saw that he was wearing identical clothing to that of the man. Of course, he was shocked. "Better," the man said. Brit just stared at the man for a few moments. Finally having a straight mind to speak he asked, "Who are you?" The man looked at him. He then took a pocket watch from his pocket. The man clicked his tongue. "My name is not of your concern. Our time, unfortunately, is too short. I'll show myself to you next time. Wake up!" the man snapped his fingers.
Brit woke up. He saw that he was wearing the same clothes he was wearing in his dream. "Wh-what?" he said, shocked and panicking. He then heard his alarm sound. He saw that it was already 4:15 AM. It was time to get changed. He took off the given clothes and took a towel. He entered his bathroom and started taking a shower. He tried to clear his mind of those dreams. Questions of who is that man and what is that place are the only things that came across his mind. He just soaked himself in water for a while. When he cleared his mind, he started taking a proper bath. After his bath, he got dressed in a Type C uniform and took a jacket just in case. He took out his left over pizza last night, heat it up, and ate it. He looked at his phone to see any news or any controversial topic. He scrolled and scrolled. Nothing too interesting. It seemed like the media is stale for now. It was only 4:45 in the morning. Brit couldn't do anything. His dream came across his mind once more. It was strange; unusual; obscene. What was that place of golden grass? Is it a vision? Or is it just a dream made up by his mind? He doesn't know the place nor the person in his dreams. He's never visited it or known it. What is it? Maybe a medium or a psychic can help with that. Brit never believed in such things. He knew it was either a hoax or a stunt. No. He decided he wouldn't go to such people. He wanted to solve the mystery himself. He sighed. He laid down on his couch. He stared at the ceiling. He just waited until Chief knocked at his door.
After what felt like eternity, he heard a knock on the door. "Brit! You ready?" Chief's voice boomed from the other side. Brit sat up. "Yeah. I'll be there," Brit replied. He opened the door and saw Chief, still groggy from his sleep. "I'll be driving huh?" Brit said. "No need. Let's just drive by the convenience store. I need coffee," Chief replied. "Sounds good to me. I also need coffee," Brit said. "You didn't give me back my car keys last night," Chief said. "Oh right. I'll just go get them from my pants," Brit answered.
Brit ran upstairs for a while. In a few seconds, he ran back with the keys clanking in his hand. "Let's go?" Brit asked. "Yep," Chief answered. The two of them got in the car. Chief turned the key and started driving.
The Verdall County Fire Department -- a branch of Central Fire Protection Bureau -- was a forty-five-minute distance from their homes. It seemed far, but on vehicle, it was quicker... unless you get stuck in traffic. "Aw man. We'll be here awhile. How does Verdall get traffic this early?" Chief said. Brit shrugged his shoulders. "It's better to be late than to not show up. It maybe awhile, but we left early so maybe we can arrive," he said while he adjusted his seat. "While we're here, care to talk about him?" Chief asked Brit.
Brit looked at Chief. He wasn't really sure about talking to Cadmium. He's just... unsure of what will happen. He's still having a battle of heart and mind. His mind says no, but his heart says yes. His mind is still slightly more powerful than his heart, although his heart is starting to act. He was a friend. He was a brother. He had his trust. And then...
"I don't know," Brit said. "I mean sure. Why not?" he continued. Chief didn't look at Brit. He already knew what emotion he was being faced with. "Look. I don't think you'll be forgiving me for this. Here," Chief said, giving Brit his phone from his pocket. Brit took it and looked at it. "Open up my phone. Go to my messages. Sign me out. Sign in again. There should be another account there named 'Chris Tin'--" Chief said. Brit snorted. "-- I know it's more of a pun. But open it up. You'll see my conversation with him," Chief continued. Brit did what Chief instructed him to do. There he saw all the messages and conversations of Chief and Cad. "You were talking behind my back?" Brit asked in an angry tone. "Don't be mad. I just updated our lives with him," Chief replied. "They're just updates. I'm not talking behind your back. I'm not saying anything behind you," he continued. Brit sighed. Brit gave back the phone to Chief who was driving. "Look. He just wants to make amends with you. He wants you to give him a second chance."
"This is sounding like a dating sit-com."
"I know, I know. But, you can't stay mad at him forever."
"To be honest, I'm not mad actually. I'm afraid and sad. I do want to forgive him. It's just that... what if he does it again?"
"Brit, we've grown up. It's been years, and he just wants you to at least recognize him again."
Brit sighed again. He felt the car come to a halt. "We're here," Chief said.
Brit fixed the chair he laid down in. He got out of the car and saw the new -- or old -- unit he was transferred to. Old because he's been here a long time ago when he was a child; New because he was... new. Not only that, he has a duty to uphold now: Lieutenant... or Captain? He never really talked about it with Chief. "Uh Chief, what are you going to hold?" Brit asked Chief. "Hmm?" Chief said. "You know... which one will you uphold? Captain or Lieutenant?" Brit asked. "How about you?" Chief asked back. "I think I'll go Lieutenant. You go be Captain," Brit said. "Final?" Chief asked once more. "Final," answered Brit.
The two of them entered the vicinity of the Fire Department. They saw other people who were talking. "Uh, excuse me?" Chief said. The firefighters looked at them. They instantly recognized who they were. "Oh! Brit and Chief right?" one of the present firefighters said. "Yup!" Chief replied. "So, which one of you is is going to be the higher one?" the other firefighter asked. "I will! Brit said he'll be Lieutenant," Chief said. "Well! Let's get everyone gathered! A meetup ain't that bad, right?" one of the firefighters said. "Where are my manners? I am the Fire Chief of this department in Verdall County. My name is Gregory. Gregory Doug. You can either call me Greg or Doug!" Greg greeted. "And I am Sasha Sloane, a Battalion Chief. You can call me Sha for short," Sasha greeted. "So how many are we in this department?" Brit asked suddenly. "Hmm? Oh! We are twenty-four in this department which includes the two of you. Want to meet everybody?" Gregory asked. Brit and Chief looked at each other. "Yeah, we'd like that," Brit said.
