Kimi giggled, then turned her head to see the room around her. The walls were painted with dull blue, and a few things hung on the wall. The bed she laid on was soft and comfortable, with a wooden headrest. Blankets of soft, warm fiber adorned it. She noted a mirror in the corner and scooted around to try and see her reflection. She quickly found a good angle, and looked at her own face. Bandages covered a large portion of it, wrapping around her head to cover the wound in the back of it. She looked away from the mirror, pushing herself to her original position where she laid herself down and pulled the thick blankets over her body. She closed her eyes, when Jem walked through the door.
“Kimi! How are you feeling? Juno told us that you woke up right before they left. You feeling okay?”
“My head hurts.”
“Do you need anything, honey?”
“No, thank you though. Y’know, Juno told me that this kingdom is ruled by two queens, named Maxine and Sophie! They have a kid too. Princev Jackie.”
“Yep, they told me that too. I’ll leave you alone to rest now, okay?”
Kimi gave her a thumbs up. Jem smiled, and turned around, leaving Kimi alone in her room. Kimi shut her eyes and fell asleep.
She dreamed a strange dream that morning. She opened her eyes to thick woods, cold and damp fog spun through the air like it was living, breathing. She felt the ground tremble, heaving in and out like a great dragon breathing deeply.
Faces surrounded her, faces that twisted from kind, gentle looks to cruel, ugly ones, not ugly in the sense of unattractive, but more awful, horrible glares that made it hard to see into their intentions.
Kimi awoke to a person standing above her. Nervous facial features told her that she’d done it once more.
“Who are you?! How did you get in here!?” The person asked. Kimi noted their short, brown hair had a thick white streak in it. Under it her skin was paler and her eye was a bright blue instead of the dull green that her other eye was.
“My name’s Kimi, and I have as much of a clue as you. Can you help me get up?”
“I’m going to call the guards on you. Tell me how you got here!”
“I don’t know! I keep falling asleep in the middle of the day and waking up somewhere completely different! I don’t know how it works!”
“Tell me everyone you've seen in the past two days.”
“I- Jemima, Karo, Dr. Juno? I guess?”
The kid’s face turned from anger to surprise, and it whispered to herself, “Ju-Ju? They have good intuition, if they thought this girl was gonna hurt someone, they would have called a guard,” they said, turning back to Kimi and pulling her off the ground, “I’m Pricnev Jackie. Fourteen years old as of next week.”
“Oh! Juno told me about you! They said they were gonna take me to see the Queens once I was well enough to stand on my own, which I am not right now.”
“Here, sit down on my bed. Sorry, it’s so covered in toys, I was obsessively collecting them when I was, like, five. I have had to get rid of some because I got ill and my mama didn’t want me to get sick from my own germs later.” The bed was large and shoved into her bay window. The end boards were a part of the wall, some parts having large, indented shelves coated with figurines and pictures, hand-drawn and photographed.
“Oh, that sucks. I got really sick a few years back. It sucked.”
“Buddy. Buddy. You don’t know sick. I was sick last week, I'll probably be sick next week. I’ve gotten pneumonia twice! In the same year! Seriously though, it took me like, two months to get un-sick, and another before my moms let me hang out with other kids again, and then I freaking got it again!”
“Gosh, that sucks.”
“Yeah, it really sucks. But I have my massive bed and my cozy room and my dolls too, so I have plenty to do. Anyway, my moms should probably know about you… being here… I’m gonna call em’ up here.”
“Okay.”
“Mama! Mommy! Come here!”
