To clarify one thing that seemed to be confused by a lot of readers:
The pro hockey player Wayne Carez did never come out as gay, so there is no homophobia against him anywhere. This was a fictional scenario that Carter's old coach made up, to give him an example, what would be the perfect time to come out, when he himself is at the top like Carez was 1999. Carter did not fear Reuben being homophobic in this context, he feared that there would be "any" criticism on the dude he considers "perfect" because that would put a crack into his fantasy of "being above all negativity, to safely be openly gay" at his level. Hope that's clearer now X'D
