Sherlock & Watson

A First Halloween - Halloween Special

A First Halloween - Halloween Special

Oct 31, 2021

Sherlock sits at his work desk glancing over several chemistry and other science-related books. Next to one of the piles of books is an open notebook that is filled with formulas, equations and long definitions. Through the window's glass there is a faint noise of laughter coming from the street below. A orange yellow glow paints the sky and reflects off the thin smoky clouds. Sherlock grunts as he runs his left hand through his bangs. The door behind him opens and John walks striding in.

"Are you still looking through those books?" John asks.

Sherlock sighs and turns back to him. His attention perks up as he looks at John up and down. John is wearing a long white coat, a stethoscope hanging around his neck, and a black bag slung over his shoulder. The silence fills the room and John glances off to the side, his face is slightly flushed.

"You know this silence is awkward, you could at least say something." John says.

Sherlock leans back and scratches the side of his face. "I think you got this wrong. Aren't you suppose to be someone else tonight?" Sherlock asks.

John looks at himself and straightens his clothes up. "You dress up as something that you want. Doesn't matter if I'm a doctor or not. Besides I feel more natural in this than something else." John responds.

There is a distance knock on a door and faded voices of children. "Trick or Treat!" The voices say. "Aren't you all nice." Betty's faded voice responds to the kids.

Sherlock cross his left leg over his right and turns back to look outside. The sun has now gone down and there are families walking up and down the sidewalk. Children are running up to the doors, dress up in different costumes like werewolves, vampires, and ghosts, collecting candy and then moving onto the next. Down the street a few children let out screams getting scared from one of the houses. Other families are chatting with one another as they continue to celebrate the haunted holiday.

"I still don't get this. Children are getting candy, find joy out of being scared and all of this dressing up." Sherlock says. "I have never seen anything like this from where I came from. Its just a waste of time from what I see."

John walks over to the window and lets out a light sigh, shaking his head. "Come on Sherlock, you must have had fun as a child. Maybe not like this but some sort of fun." John says.

"Nope." Sherlock says in a disinterested tone as he looks back down at his book.

John places his hands on his side and watches as Mrs. Hudson comes in and places a bowl of candy down. "Come on Sherlock, time to put down the books and have some fun for once."

Sherlock glances at her and goes back to reading. Mrs. Hudson walks over and plaecs a key in John's hand. "Can you look at the house extension before going to bed. Its suppose to be cleared out for the next tenants." She says.

Mrs. Hudson heads to the door and stops looking back at John. "Be careful, I also have heard about strange things happening that is why tenants don't stay long there." She leaves them alone and John glances down at the keys.

"Ah...Sherlock...." John trails off.

"John. You aren't about to tell me that you think ghosts are real, are you?" Sherlock keeps his gaze down at his books.

"Come on Sherlock at least take a break and help me." John closes the book and gives Sherlock a 'come on' kinda of look.

Sherlock rubs his head with some frustration. "Also...we aren't living here for free....we help her out. " John adds.

After a few moments, Sherlock stands up from his seat and throws off his pajama robe, replacing it with a long coat and straights his hair. "I'm not dressing up in something to do this." He heads out of the room and John shrugs his shoulders, following him.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Moments later John and Sherlock are standing outside next to Mrs. Hudson's home with an extention and double front door. There are cobwebs on the windows, some of the house plates have rusted too, and the overhanging shingles fall to the ground.

"This place looks abandoned." John walks up to a window and peers in. Darkness greets his eyesight with several pieces of furniture covered in blankets.

Sherlock strides up to the front door and with his left hand on his chin, he leans forward and inspects the front door knobs. "Based on the amount of dirt and dust, this handle hasn't been touched in a long time."

"Um...Sherlock..." John voice reaches Sherlock's ears. Sherlock joins John near the window and peers in too. Across from the living room, a light peers out from a door that is ajar. John looks away and walks over to the side of the house where the room is to see if light streams out from any windows. He sees nothing and looks back.

"No one is suppose to be there." John says.

"Its probably just faulty electricity, its connected to Mrs. Hudson's house, there should be a break causing lights to turn on." Creak. As Sherlock speaks there is a noise behind him. John and Sherlock both turn back just in time to see the front door open up.

"I'm pretty sure that door was locked. I have the keys right here." John says as he holds the keys up. He walks over and the door opens the rest of the way. "How do you explain this Sherlock?"

Sherlock joins him and peers inside glances from one direction to the next. "Its an old house, if the wood swells up with the moisture then we just happened to be here when it opens up." He says.

With his hands behind his back Sherlock walks in and looks around. John cautiously walks in behind him and lifts up some of the blankets. "This place needs to have the furniture replaced, looks like something is eating through it." John says.

Sherlock walks over to the door ajar and places his hand on the handle. John comes up behind him and whispers, "Sherlock are you sure about this?" John asks.

Without looking back at John, Sherlock opens up the door and goes in. He notices a old bed, dresser and in the corner a tv is turned on but there is only static on the screen. "It seems our mysterious light was only a faulty television." He walks over and turns it off. John takes out a flashlight and shines it around the room.

"Maybe warn me first before turning off the only light we had here." John says.

Sherlock comes back over and looks on the nearby dresser. John moves the flashlight around and then behind them the tv turns on again.

"Sherlock....." John taps Sherlock on the shoulder. Sherlock turns back around and glances at the television again. He bends down and thinks then a loud crash shakes the house. John and Sherlock jump and then John runs out to the living room. As he moves his flashlight, a cloud of dust floods from the second floor stairs. Sherlock takes the lead and runs up the steps into the dust cloud. John tries to follow behind him.

They make it to the master bedroom and John opens the door. Inside, Mrs. Hudson is laying on the ground with some wooden planks on top of her.

"Goodness, Mrs. Hudson are you alright?" John says as he tries to help her up. Sherlock watches from the doorway.

Mrs. Hudson is helped to her feet and she dusts herself off. Sherlock comes over and grabs her hand then flips it to see the back of it. John tries to intervene but Sherlock stops him. "It seems that she is the cause of our strange happenings." Sherlock says.

John looks at Mrs. Hudson. "Is that true?" He asks.

Mrs. Hudson looks down and rubs her foot against the floor. "Its a tradition to have fun and scary each other on Halloween. Usually its just me here and this year, I kinda wanted to try to have some fun." John scratches his head but Sherlock turns and walks out the door. Both John and Mrs. Hudson follows him. They make their way down the stairs and Sherlock stops at the front door.

"I don't know why on earth you thought that I would get scared by things that can easily be explained by science and reason." Sherlock says. John comes up to Sherlock's side. "Enough Sherlock, she meant it all in good fun. It's a good memory to experience." John responds.

Sherlock looks back at Mrs. Hudson, who has her gaze still at the floor. "I will admit being able to pull off all of that is no easy task for one woman. The door and the decorations where a good authentic touch." He keeps his straight face but she looks at him.

John decides to join in. "Yes and being able to get the tv to switch on and off even though you weren't in the same room was amazing!" Mrs. Hudson looks at John confused.

"Television?" She asks. "The only light I turned on was the back bedroom because I needed to see when coming through the back door. I turned it off right afterwards."

John and Sherlock glance at each other then back at the puzzled Mrs. Hudson.

"When we were in that room the television kept turning on and off, Sherlock debunked it as maybe just a faulty television set." John says.

Mrs. Hudson rests the side of her head in the palm of her right hand. "Oh dear....that television set hasn't worked in years. The thing isn't even pulled it. The whole cord has been ripped so its dangerous to even attempt to plug it in."

John is silence for a moment then from the back bedroom the sound of a television clicks on. This time instead of static the sound of a voice comes through the screen.

"Welcome back to the haunted channel. The best place for all of your frights, ghosts and ghouls. This is your host for the night-" The voice says.

All three of them look back at the bedroom door as it slowly opens up wide to have the living room filled with light from the television. John and Mrs. Hudson back away and both take off out of the house.

Sherlock stands there and runs his left hand through his bangs again. "I guess this night wasn't all bad. The experiment on one's limit to being frighten is truly an interesting observation." He lifts up his foot and the door that opened closed by itself on cue and from his pocket he takes out a remote. Clicking it the sound of the television turns off. "Also, if taken the proper precautions, its easy to fix electronics." There is a keychain at the end of the remote and Sherlock swings it around on his finger as he places his right hand in his pocket.

Taking one last look at the inside of the house, Sherlock then leaves through the front door. As he takes a few steps down the front of the stairs behind him the door slowly creaks close. He stops and looks back just in time to see the door close the rest of the way. Then very faintly he hears the click of the door locking itself.

"Ah...nevermind." Sherlock says as he contiue down the front pathway and heads back onto the sidewalk to join up with John and Mrs. Hudson. The three then make their way back to the house, however from the shadows of the house a figure stands holding another remote in his hands. His eyes keenly watch Sherlock as he disappears back into the house. After a few moments the figure turns and disappears into a nearby alleyway.
