Kyus ears were so bright red with hot blood Sampson could see them in the dark and felt an odd senes of satisfaction at it. the curated his thoughts "I think I should leave we have too many questions and this is complicated.”
Kyu begin to cry in earnest now Sampson gave up on reasoning with the kid “we’ll talk more tomorrow sleep now" he rolled over and put his back against Kyu who rolled over and held tight to his shirt and cried till asleep.
Kyu slept in for a while so tired from trying to be okay with life tuning upside down. finally awake Kyu wondered out to see Sampson setting the dear and rabbit hide as a tent over the outdoor fire to cure properly.
Kyu set the kettle besides the fire set back to watch. “I’m going to try the smoker today see if I can get it to dry slowly with the fire and the sun so hopefully tomorrow we can use it.”
Sampson sat across the fire just able to see Kyu over the smoking hies “have you seen a transformation?”
“once mom got really angry and took a bullet for Yuki she was the most magnificent and terrifying thing I have ever seen” Kyu spoke with reverence.
“well, I will tonight it helps me think clearly “were out the inner wolf so the man can be logical.” he quoted I’m going to go back to your electronics and see if anyone has messed with them if they are clean we will ask Cypher some questions. If they are not and it is a trap you have enough firewood to last you though the winter and you can busily yourself with getting food.”
Kyu in equal parts wanted to see and didn’t so nodded “I hope you do come back, i can mind the fire if you want to hunt.”
Sampson got his hunting things and left and Kyu worked on the smoker keeping two low fires all day. and venturing into the seller finally. it was horribly musty but the stars down were still sturdy. there was more junk, almost all of it too old and rot to do anything with but pitch out in the woods to return to nature. anything metal was kept and there was a large assortment of canned and pickled foods Kyu resolved to read about what to do with them later it wasn’t a big space but once it was cleaned out and scrubbed down it looked nice. stone walls and floor, nice and cool. Kyu was gross again from the moldy rotten work and having to run up and feed the fires all day so finally as the sun set thinking that Sampson must have gone already blanketed both fires and started to the river thinking better of it turned around graded a shinny peace of broke glass went for a good long wash.
“Rook I brought you a thing but you must be lookout okay” but Rook was nowhere to be seen. so Kyu placed the bit of glass on the big rock undressing too long shirt went in the water, with a plans of scrubbing the grime and dirt from nails fingers and toes. Kyu now accustom to the freakishly cold water, was truly enjoying the grime washing away. when the unmistakable dead weight tump of a body being dropped made Kyu spin around to the largest Wolf they had ever seen standing on the shore staring at them the wolf was stunning in the moonlight. at it’s feet was a small doe.
The wolf lowered it’s head looking as if it was getting ready to pounce. when a brassy voice from above broke thought the night.
“now, now Sampson your ruining the show!”
In the moon light a strikingly handsome man with raven hair and strong features, gracefully eyeing the glass Kyu had brought. casually, as disinterested as an uncle scolding a toddler for being silly. sat lazing on a branch high above, Sampson ran at a nearby tree vaulting up and kicking off of it to snap his jaws on were the man had been. Kyu wasn't sure what was going on but it seemed like the knew eachother so Kyu got out grabbed their things and the small doe that Sampson had left then ran back to the house.
At the house Kyu lit the fire outside and broke the dear down in the same way Sampson shone for the rabbit then hanging one whole leg in the smoker, rubbing the brain into the hid and stretching it on the wall just as Sampson had done. Kyu tried hard not to think of what had happened but it kept coming back. ‘Sampson was huge and amazing and beautiful was he bigger than a horse! could that other man have been Rook was that possible? werewolf sure, vampire were of some relation to bats maybe, but crows? what else could there be!’ finally done with the brack down the filet and some other peaces we hung on bone fit in the smoker.
then Kyu didn’t know what to do with the guts smocked sausages would be a good thing but that meant Really cleaning the intestines. it was so bright by the moon that all sense of time was lost and still geared up! so Kyu set about really cleaning the intestines fallowing the steps from one of the books. Kyu first pulled the intestines from the fat, letting the gross empty out then ran the intestine over the back of a butter knife, breaking up the mucus lining Kyu did this three times then rinsed them out and pulled them over a soft clean stick, then turned them inside out and ran them over the back of the butter knife three times cleaning off every part of the mucus rinsing it off three times. then with out salt, boiled some water and set it to the side wail collocating all of the organs the book suggested, all the fat and little meat bits and large portions left over in a big pile for chopping then seeing that the water was bearly steaming Kyu tested the water to find it still vary hot but not quit scalding so dumped in all of the very clean intestine and set to chopping the meat mix with a fever! the old cleaver Kyu had found in the house was more useful for its weight then edge but before long the there was a bucket full of roughly minced venison now was the hard part Kyu cut the intestines now causing into about 4ft lengths tide one end and pain stakingly slowly shoved the minced venison into the casing this was slow work that took on a rhythm stuff causing 2, 4ft length then stoke the smoker take out any meat that was cured properly. first the small peaces. more sausages, stock the fire, more sausages then take out the fillets. more sausages till well after the sun was up. finally the the whole thing was stuffed and the leg was ready to come out. Kyu was dragging hard, so burnt them selfs trying to get the leg out but after almost dropping it on the ground dumped it in a clean bucket and took it inside to hang in the rafters then back the the smoker with the first load of sausages it would take two rounds to cure all that Kyu had made but the sun was up and Kyu was hot and to tired to walk to the river so splashed a bucket of water over their head, perfunctory cleaned off and curled up in the shade to sleep till the smoker needed more wood the fire almost died twice with Kyus naps but once awake the night seemed like a fever dream. Kyu looked out at all the work they had done in amazement then collected the first sausages from the smoker and set on the new ones the rib bones were working wells hanging bars. Kyu lazily hung the new sausages in the rafters then cleaned up the bloody mess left behind from all the chopping and bleeding then went to the river to clean off this time keeping clothe and knife on just getting a quick dunk to rinse off the night activity’s
Kyu called out “Rook was that you last night?” no answer
Sopping wet but much cleaner Kyu headed to the house then once there stoked the fire again, then pilfered two nails from one of the broken selves and hung one of the old table cloths over the door of the back room and changed in to dry clothes. Kyu still feeling silly from the nights absurdity got a half burnt stick from the fire pit and wrote storage over the door.
Kyu spent the rest of the day minding the smoker and reading on the next project. finally taking the last round of sausages to hang and going to nap properly.
the moon was high when Kyu woke up and again that rush of energy filled them. so Kyu took the cart and got more clay and as much moss as they could find once satisfied Kyu mixed them together with some ash and started re-chinking the walls, any spot light could get through heat could get out, Kyu didn’t know why but they didn’t want to eat, sleep or anything they just kept working.
the next morning the moon fever had passed, leaving Kyu worn thin and exhausted, Kyu sat in the door way looking out waiting for Sampson to return finally reading till sleep took over again.
