Episode 3: “w-whos’ there!?”
I swiftly made my way through the trees, the smell of something foul mixed with smoke lingered in the air. It was already dark and I could hardly see what was in front of me, hence me clumsily having my leg almost twisted because of a tree root about 30 minutes ago. I keep walking forward until I see something shining under the moonlight, I slow my pace. Keeping my guard up, I approach what seems to be a busted up police car. ‘hm.. It must’ve rolled down here from the freeway’ , the car’s back passenger door and driver’s seat door were open. I looked around to make sure I was alone, and I leaned inside. There wasn't much in here, just a pack of cigarettes, a walkie, and the keys. I opened the glove compartment and found a police baton. “Nice, this’ll work for now” I pick it up and I exit the car. A few feet away something is splayed on the ground, I walk forward but as soon as I come a few feet near it I reel back in disgust. The smell was horrid, it was the body of a police officer. He was probably the one who owned the car, so I backed away from the sight and turned back to the car. I reach in and grab the walkie and stuff it into my bag, and I head off into the night. For some reason it seemed to be colder now than it was before, a few minutes of walking in the dark later I heard something snap a few feet behind me. I turn around with my baton raised, to see… ‘a dog?’ from behind a tree a little husky steps out, i sigh with relief and lower my baton “wow little guy, you sure gave me a fright there..”, I say as I kneel down. I hold out my hand and the husky licks it. “Heh… your one lucky pup to survive out here”, I scratch it behind the ear and it rolls over. I see the dog's name tag and read it to myself, ‘nixon….That's a nice name’, i get to my feet and nixon sits up too. “Well buddy, I guess you’re coming with me”. The dog wags its tail and trots to my side, I start to yawn. “Let's find a place to stay for the night boy..” I started into a jog, with Nixon trailing beside me... about 10 minutes later I spotted a street lamp. ‘whooh... I thought we were never going to get out of there..’ I walk into the street and look around. Turned over cars, fallen light posts…, and a house!. Across the street was a small two story house with a picket fence around it. I turned my head and looked down at Nixon but he wasn't looking at me. He was just staring out into the forest growling quietly “what is it boy…?-” I began to inquire, but I soon realized what he was growling at when I heard a sound that I can't even describe properly. But I knew it was one.. No, a dozen. of those… things that were on the freeway. “Nixon” I say in a stern whisper, the husky looks up at me. “We've gotta go” I turned around and booked it toward the house, Nixon ran ahead of me and stopped by the fence. I swung open the gate. Holding it open for him to come inside, and shut it. I look up to see a horrifying sight. I don't know how many there were but all i know was that there were too many for my liking. They all seemed to be pouring out of the forest like a faucet, so I dash up to the front door and try the knob. … it was stuck. I rattled it again but it hardly moved, I seized the doorknob in both hands and twisted with all my might and the door opened. I quickly went inside, with Nixon following after me. I shut the door and lock it... I let out a long sigh and slump to the floor, “hah.. Hah.. that was a close one” i say as i pet the husky lovingly. But not even a moment later I hear a creak on what would be the top of the stairs on the second floor, I quickly bolt upright. And grip my baton defensively, “w-whos’ there?” i manage to choke out “i'm warning ya, im- im armed!” I start to approach the stairs but I stop. “Ok, ok i'm coming out. Just dont hurt me” says a voice from the top of the stairs.
