It's raining hard, but it's Friday and there's a lacrosse game in Denford so I dress warmly and put on a rain jacket to get as little wet as possible. Mom's shift at work has been changed, so today she takes me to high school, although she tells me that she won't be able to pick me up and that I probably won't be in time for dinner.
By the time I get to Denford the rain has barely abated a bit, but there are still people in the stands waiting for the game to start. I sit in any place and watch the players enter the field. Brett sees me among the sea of people and gives me a smile and a brief wave, I do the same. I feel my heart beating a little faster than normal, and I think about what Mason said, even though I try to quickly get that idea out of my head and enjoy the game.
The first half ends with the score in favor of Denford. Now it rains less and we are all waiting for the second part to begin when I hear my cell phone ring.
—Hi Liam —I say cheerfully as I pick up the phone— what's wrong?
[Brett narrates]
There are still a few minutes until the second half of the game begins, so I decide to go say hello to Mia, but I stop when I see that she is talking on the phone. I don't want to disturb her, so I stand a few feet away watching her. She is prettier than usual, if that's possible, although she looks awfully funny in her yellow raincoat and wellies. Mia gets up all of a sudden, she's not talking on the phone anymore and she seems worried about something so I walk over immediately.
—What's the matter? —I ask when I reach her. Mia looks at me and then I notice that she is about to cry.
—Mason had an accident —She answers, his voice cracking— Is in the hospital. I need to get out of here and call a cab, or catch a bus or something. Anything —She says quickly desperately.
—I'll take you —I say and start walking with her towards the changing rooms.
—Brett! —I hear my coach yelling— What do you think you're doing? Come here, let's get started. Go back to the field.
—I can't, you'll have to continue the game without me —I say pushing him away.
—If you don't go back to the field right now, forget about playing again. You'll be out of the team —he says again, shouting but I ignore him.
—I don't want to cause you problems with the team —Mia says— I can order a taxi, I don't think it will take long to arrive.
—Nothing about that. Wait for me here, I'll change in less than two minutes and we'll go to the hospital, okay? —Mia nods and I go straight into the changing rooms.
I take the clean clothes out of my bag and put the team uniform I just took off. I dry off a bit with a towel as I was wet from the rain and then I hurriedly dress and head out to meet Mia in the hallway.
We both walk briskly together under the same umbrella to my car. I open the passenger door and when she comes in I close it and go to my seat. We buckle up and I drive silently to the hospital.
At the hospital reception they inform us that Mason is being searched, but that as soon as they finish him they will take him to the room they have assigned him, number 254 - B on the 6th floor.
Mia and I took the elevator up to the corresponding floor and waited in the corridor next to the door of the room that they have indicated. There we find Mason's parents, who are quick to hug Mía as soon as they see her and then greet me. You can tell that both have cried, although now they seem calmer and tell us what happened.
Apparently Mason was on the motorcycle when a car ran a traffic light and both collided, the driver of the car is fine but Mason suffered more damage while riding a motorcycle, but luckily, none was too serious. When the ambulance arrived he was unconscious. Now they are running tests to make sure it doesn't have any internal damage.
—I'm sure Mason is fine —I tell Mia as we sit on one of the secluded benches.
—Yes, I sure do. Mason is strong —she replies, although I notice that despite wanting to appear calm, she is worried and nervous about Mason.
—And Liam? —I ask trying to change the subject a bit when noticing the blond's absence. I know Mia, Liam, and Mason are best friends, so it's weird that I'm not here.
—He had gone with his parents to spend the weekend visiting relatives who live in the city, but when I spoke with him he told me that he would try to be here as soon as possible. Maybe tomorrow will come, but if you want to leave, nothing happens, you've done more than enough.
—Of course not, I wasn't asking you for that.
—I feel bad for you, you missed the game and your coach got mad at you because of me and now I have you sitting here waiting.
—Do not be sad. You are more important than the game, so I am right where I should be. I'm not leaving you here alone. —Mia smiles slightly and I pull her close to hug her.
"I am looking for you". A set phrase that Mia often uses with her friends, but that Brett Talbot takes at face value, giving way to a bet between the two
