I meet Mason just before entering the institute and greet him with a big hug.
—I'm glad they released you and you're going back to class, I was starting to miss you.
—Yes, we have to catch up. Liam might have settled down the other day, but I wasn't. And I know it has something to do with Brett, because I saw your cell phone and it wasn't your mother who called you, so tell me what's going on.
[Flashback]
—May I know what's wrong with you? —Liam asks, staring at me.
Mason has not yet been discharged so Liam and I would come to visit him every day.
—What are you talking about?
—You have been very strange for several days.
—Weird in what way?
—I don't know, but you're keeping something from us.
Brilliant. I was hoping it wouldn't show that I've been dating Brett for three days and that I can't get that idea out of my head, just as I can't stop thinking about what I felt when I kissed him, but apparently it shows enough to me that Liam is suspicious and that's a bad sign.
—You're fatal —I laughed a little trying to make my lie more credible— what could I hide from you?
—Definitely Liam has been upset with so many hours on the road in a row —Mason says, then changes the subject, helping me out of this.
That Mason didn't make any hinting or comment to Liam that Brett was here the night he had the accident is a bad sign.
My cell phone rings, pulling me out of my thoughts. It's Brett, so I quickly hang up before any of my friends can see his name on the screen.
—She was my mother.
—Why didn't you take it?
—He told me he would call me when he was at the hospital door. I have to go guys, she's waiting for me,
Liam looks at me not very convinced so I say goodbye quickly to them to get out of there as soon as possible. As soon as I get out of the hospital, I'm mentally grateful that Liam stayed with Mason a little longer, because Brett is waiting in his car right outside the door.
[End Flashback]
I let out a heavy sigh, I knew this was going to happen.
—Do you remember the night of the accident when I went to see you at the hospital with Brett?
—Yes, whats up?
—When I got out of the hospital, Brett walked me home, like every Friday.
—Every Friday? —Interrupts me— You haven't told me that.
—I already told you that I had to go see his games, because when they finished he would take me home. And it hasn't been that many days either, just three —I point out as we enter the institute together— The fact is that when we got home he opened the car door for me.
—God, that's very romantic. I did not imagine that Brett was one of those who open the car door for you.
—He opened the door for me because it's broken and he had to open it from the outside.
—It's still romantic.
—Okay, whatever you say, but don't interrupt me again.
—Okay, keep counting." I'm not going to interrupt you anymore.
—Well, as I was saying, Brett opened the car door and when I got out one thing he led to the other and ended up confessing that he liked it and we kissed.
—I knew it. I told you, see? I was right, I always am.
—And we're dating —I add quickly— but Mason still understands me perfectly.
—OH MY GOD, ARE YOU DATING? YOU'RE DATING!!
—Mason! Lower your voice, I don't want the whole institute to know.
—Okay, I'll calm down. But it is very strong. Why haven't you told me before?
—I was going to tell you on Saturday when I went to visit you again, but Liam was there so it didn't seem like a good time.
—You're right, Liam better not find out about this. She hates Brett, it won't do her good to know that she's dating her best friend.
—We have to think of something to get them along.
—Yes, but later. Now tell me more.
—There is nothing else. We've only met once since then but nothing extraordinary happened. And this Friday there is another game, it is the last ... Brett does not play but he is going to go anyway, we will see each other there.
—Do you think I can go too?
—No —I answer immediately, I don't even want to imagine the situation with Mason there.
—Easy, just kidding. But as soon as you get home you have to call me and tell me whatever happened. It doesn't matter what time it is.
—Okay —I laugh, but I know my friend is serious.
