After a couple of hours of waiting without any news the doctor appears and informs us that Mason's tests have gone well. Apparently nothing is damaged.
—Now we will transfer you to your room—the doctor continues to inform us— He just woke up from a small coma —Mason's mother sobs at this news and I notice that Mia is holding the urge to cry— you can see him and talk to him, but don't overwhelm him and don't let him make any kind of effort.
That said, the doctor says goodbye and then leaves, leaving us alone again. Although it does not take long for nurses to appear, pushing Mason's bed in the direction of his room and leaving him there.
—You can come in if you want, but do it two by two —one of the nurses tells us before leaving.
Mason's parents are the first to come in and as soon as they leave Mia asks me to come in with her, and I do.
[Mia narrates]
I walk into Mason's room with Brett and, to my surprise, my friend is a lot better than I expected, which reassures me.
He has an arm in a cast and bruises on his face, but he still smiles when he sees me appear.
—This was not what I expected —Mason says, giving me a mocking smile when he sees Brett appear behind me.
—How are you? —I ask sitting close to him ignoring his comment— Does your arm hurt a lot?
—I'm fine, my arm only hurts a little, but stop talking about me.
—You are the one who has had an accident.
—That's why the doctors and my parents have already asked too much about me.
—Okay, what do you want to talk about?
—What do you think of? Of you, obviously.
—I was at a Brett game, you know, for the bet, when I got the news and he decided to join me. The end.
—So you still deny that you like each other —Brett laughs at Mason's comment, but doesn't reply.
—Don't start with that again, Mason.
—It's okay.
Mason changes the topic of conversation, so we continue talking a little more before having to leave for him to rest.
When we leave the hospital Brett brings me closer to home, which seems to be becoming a habit.
—Thanks for everything —I say when we arrive— and I'm sorry about the game.
—You're welcome, and I've already told you that you don't have to worry about that.
I smile at Brett and start to get out of the car, but I can't.
—Brett, when are you planning to fix the door? —I say when I see that it is reluctant to open even though I'm pushing with all the force I can.
—Soon, I promise. Just wait.
Brett gets out of the car, walks around it, and opens my door from the outside.
—Thanks again —I say, getting out of the car— And by the way, Mason's comments... forget them. He's been determined for days that you and I are dating, I don't know where he gets those ideas from.
—You really don't know why Mason says those things?
—What are you talking about?
—I like you, Mia. I can't believe you haven't noticed yet.
—Me? Why?
—I don't know why you are so surprised that I notice you, it would be strange not to. You are beautiful, intelligent, kind, sincere and funny.
—Now for the part where you kiss me? —I ask foolishly keeping the look in his eyes.
—Only if you want.
I smile. Of course I want him to kiss me, but I don't answer or wait for him to take the plunge. I stand on tiptoe and I am the one who ends the little distance between us.
—And now, what's next? —I ask when we part.
—There are two options. The first time you regret kissing me and tell me that it is better to forget all this.
—I don't regret it, so what's the other option?
—The second option is for me to kiss you —he says stroking my cheeks with his thumbs as he shortens the distance between us even more— and asks you to be my girlfriend.

"I am looking for you". A set phrase that Mia often uses with her friends, but that Brett Talbot takes at face value, giving way to a bet between the two
