It must be very little for the game to start, because when I arrive there are already enough people in the stands. I sit in one of the holes that I see and wait for the game to start.
—Hi —Brett greets me as he sits next to me and then leaves a kiss on my cheek—What are you doing here?
—I lost a bet —I answer, following the game— since then I have to come to all the mini-league games.
—Oh, so you're in luck because this is the last game. You will not have to go back.
—I think I'll be back anyway, have you seen the Devenford players? Some are very handsome. I think for the next game I will even bring a banner.
—Seriously? —Brett asks, genuinely surprised.
—Of course not, Brett. Just kidding.
—I should have imagined it.
The coach signals the start of the game so we pay attention to him. Denvenforf faces a strong opponent, so the match is interesting, although more than once I realize that I am paying more attention to Brett than to the game. It makes me laugh to see how he celebrates each goal of his team with joy, or how he tenses with the plays in which the opposing team is in danger of scoring a point.
The score is 3-2 when the game ends. Brett claps with euphoria, as his team has won, and comes down the stands holding my hand and helping me dodge people until we hit the field, where he greets his teammates.
—Hey, good game —he congratulates Josh as they clasp hands in a personal way in greeting.
—Yes, they have made it difficult for us, but in the end we have been able to with them. —Hello —he greets me when he notices me.
—Hi, Josh. Congratulations.
—Thanks. And congratulations to you too, for taking the step. It was about time —he adds, clapping Brett on the shoulder— I have to go change, see you.
—I don't know why I keep telling him things, I do know how loud he is —he complains as we leave as well.
—Easy, it's the same with Mason. And I warn you that when he sees us together it will be much worse than this.
—Yes, I can imagine it —he says, laughing— Wait, does Mason know?
—I had no choice but to tell him, and Liam suspects something.
—Wow! Even Liam about to find out too, at this rate in a few more weeks I will have met your family and after a few months we will already be living together and perhaps by the end of the year I will have asked you to marry.
—Well, you're in a hurry.
—Just kidding. I really care about you, Mia —he says, putting on something more serious and I have to confess that something is stirring inside me— with you I want to do things slowly and well. I want this to work.
—I want this to work too —I confess, intertwining my fingers with his. Brett smiles sweetly, but it doesn't take long for him to smile mischievously.
—Does that mean you're coming to the party?
I knew he would say something like that. During the game he already told me that Josh's birthday is on Wednesday and, taking advantage of the fact that his friend Luke's parents are not at home this weekend, they are going to celebrate it in advance there in a big way.
—I don't know if it's a good idea.
—Yes it is, you'll see. I will be able to introduce you to my friends. I know I just said I want to go slow, but it's the perfect opportunity. You will like them. And, if you are not comfortable you will only have to tell me and we will go from there.
—Okay —I finish by agreeing and, I have to confess, I'm actually looking forward to going to a party with Brett.
"I am looking for you". A set phrase that Mia often uses with her friends, but that Brett Talbot takes at face value, giving way to a bet between the two
