The light of the attack scares Aglia awake, she sits up, on the bed, brushing strands of hair out of her eyes, she notices the curious and worried look of her sister, Lilla, in the bed beside hers. Her blue eyes, clear as ice, stared down at her from under her still untidy golden brown hair.
“Same dream?” She questions resuming the action of putting on her reddish-brown boots over her moss-green pants.
“Always.” She sighs, her violet eyes, deep as the siren songs, staring at the blankets.
“Is everything all right?” Rox emerges from the bedroom door, the pale skin of his thin and delicate face contrasted with the black as obsidian and wavy hair, where an unfinished braid stood out, his black overcoat was disheveled, as if hastily dressed.
Aglia stares into her brother's golden eyes, small remnants of amber still stubbornly manifesting.
"Are you sure it's not a vision?" He lines up his black overcoat, conjuring flames on the sleeves and hem of the garment.
"Dreaming for so long with the same vision? No, it's very unlikely.” Aglia heads towards the ornate dresser, between the beds, picking up her usual green shirt and pants, distinguished only by their distinctive shades.
“Besides, I've transferred this dream to the crystal ball a few times, and yet I continue to be haunted by it. It really seems to be just a dream. The only details I know are how little I can distinguish or just know, as in any dream.” She complements as she caress the clothes in her hand.
“What bothers me is that you have this dream quite often, especially during the festival for Gaia.” Manifests Lilla by finishing the braided fringe. "If I were the one having these dreams, we could say they're someone else's memories, but you've never demonstrated that ability."
“Still, we can't completely rule out that possibility.” Enunciates Rox by completing his braid with a golden ornament.
“I don't know…there's something weird about it, tonight I dreamed of the attack several times.” Aglia sighs. “These dreams are becoming more frequent and real.”
“Tonight was a strange night for me too.” Both look at Rox curiously. “I had a dream in which black clouds quickly gathered, turning day into night.”
“Boys, breakfast is ready!” Calls a female voice from the kitchen downstairs.
"I'll let you finish dressing." The bedroom door closes behind Rox.
“You should talk to our mother about tonight, we can also do some research in the library after we get back from the festival.” Lilla continues as she puts on the purple half-sleeve coat mixed with the blue of the hems, where golden arabesques adorned the garment.
“She'll probably answer the same as always, that is a common nightmare, that these are images created by my mind because of our parents' deaths in the attack.” Aglia sighs heavily as she laces up her brown boot after changing into her pajamas.
"And you think they are not." Replies Lilla, starting three small braids on each side of Aglia's hair, gradient between blood red at the roots and white at the ends.
“Not in that way, I agree it should be related to the loss of our parents, but I don't feel like it's just imagination.”
“Our dreams can deceive us, you should know that sister. These wars have affected us all, it's normal to have nightmares like that.” Lilla smiles tenderly.
She joins the smaller braids into one last braid behind Aglia's head.
“Thanks Li.” They both hug.
"How much longer are you two going to take to get ready?" Rox yells from the stairwell.
"Be quiet Rox! It is you who takes a lifetime to choose an outfit!” Lilla yells back leaving the room as Aglia laughs at the implications of her twin brothers.
Aglia dons her light brown coat, conjures small flowers on the branches that adorn it, and heads to the kitchen, walking slowly across the deck, sliding her hand through the shield made of massive branches.
Thoughts raced through her mind, but nothing seemed to hold for more than a few milliseconds. Even trying to concentrate her mind ran everywhere.
Aglia rubbed her eyes before descending the ornate staircase that extended to the center of the hell. She was tired, both physically and mentally. She couldn't stand being tormented by the same dream anymore, having her past hidden from her. All she wanted was to discover the truth.
Lilla and Rox excitedly helped Delfin, the brothers' guardian, finish preparing the table, they both discussed the Gaia festival, Lilla commented on the songs while Rox talked about how she felt that Gaia herself seemed to be present during the festival, celebrating with the mages as well as the other gods.
“Good Morning.”
“Good Morning.’ Answers Delfin, the hair, blue-gray, like the dolphins that give her name, held back by a half ponytail letting its bangs fall over the left eye.
The color of her hair and her eyes, blue as sapphires, made it clear that the mage was a water nymph, half-blooded between a merman and a mage.
“It's so much fun to celebrate our birthday during Gaia's Day.” Lilla spread her arms around the kitchen, forcing the others to dodge. "It is as if the whole city is celebrating our birthday."
"The best part is the fireworks that end the festival."
"You love fire don't you Rox?"
"What can I say? It's a genetic tendency." He answers with a large smile and a wink.
"The lord of fire and darkness." Lilla bows.
"I prefer only ‘of the fire'." He looks down to the floor.
Lilla hesitates for a second. "Sorry." She said, sitting down without looking at her brother.
Aglia sits at the table in silence still thinking about the meaning of such frequent nightmares and why only she had any kind of nightmare about the attack that had killed her parents.
Lilla had an exceptional memory, due to her gift of retrocognition, the ability to read the past, yet she didn't remember anything from before or during the attack, and even Rox who had always been sensitive to the pain of others and with the gift of premonition, the reading of the present, was ignorant of what had happened.
Aglia just played with a slice of cornbread while Rox and Lilla, tossed over the table, went back to discussing the festival and what the day's plans would be, which certainly included the berrys scone from Cassady, an old school friend of the triplets.
"What is it Aglia? You barely touched the food.” Questions Delfin realizing the lack of interest of hers.
“I'm just a little tired, it's nothing.”
“She dreamed all night about the attack.” Lilla comments, correcting her posture.
“Aglia, you know you shouldn't worry so much about things that are in the past.” Delfin says in a tone mixed between melancholy and tiredness.
“I know!” Aglia shouts standing up, the others look at her scared. "You've told me this a thousand times!" Her eyes were darker. " Why don't you tell us the truth!” She slaps her hands on the table. "Who were our parents? You never say anything about them!”
“Aglia…”
"What's so important you can't tell us?" Interrupts.
Delfin stands up.
“Aglia, your parents were royal knights, they died protecting the city, can't you understand that?” Tears rolled down Aglia's face. “They asked me to take care of you three, and that's what I did, you're my children too.” Like the water of a small river, Delfin's words were clear and calm.
Aglia drops into her chair as she wipes the tears from her face.
“Sorry Delfin, I don't know what… I'm sorry.”
“It's okay, there's nothing to be sorry for. I understand your frustration, it's only natural.” Delfin strokes Aglia's hair.
Lilla and Rox watched Aglia, stunned by her sister's unusual behavior, but soon she calmed down, they both went back to planning the activities they would do for the two days of Gaia's festival. Rox occasionally watched her worried.
Having vented her frustrations, Aglia was able to join the conversation and enjoy some breakfast. Delfin ate in silence watching the trio, reflecting, however the triplets were so engaged in their discussion that they barely noticed the nymph.
