It’s a rainy evening on the Lower East Side. A man crosses the street, heading towards a small restaurant that’s located on the first floor of a slightly dilapidated building. The red sign, slightly frayed at the sides, above the door says, “Amato’s.”
It took him a while to find the place, New York being something else.
The man, Annibale, steps inside the restaurant and looks around him. It’s a simple-looking restaurant, with light-orange wallpaper and yellowish ceiling lights giving the place an energetic, somewhat nostalgic feel.
He gave a glance at the menu, finding it more agreeable with him than anywhere else. He better not take his chances, the rain was bed, and he was drenched having forgot his umbrella somewhere along the way.
He came in, giving a glance at a menu. He felt much more satisfied with the menu here, finally something with pizza.
“What would you like?” A waiter asked.
“A glass of wine, with this pizza please.”
It did look like the most normal thing on the menu, pizza with cheese and basil. And if there was red wine, he’ll take it.
“Yes. I’ll take that.”
He had paid the amount, with a small tip. He doubt he was the owner of anything.
He found a seat somewhere, long and far away from home. With the pizza coming in, and the glass of wine.
“Thank you,” he said.
It was not a well-to-do neighborhood, exactly the sort of location most of his friends would warn him off. But it was not the first time he had wandered off, even if it was mostly in a city he called home. It was different here.
Annibale took a slice off the table, folding it in half, eating it. The rain was bad, perhaps they could give him some directions or at least get him to find a streetcar to his accommodations or even to get a taxi.
“Do you know where I can hail a taxi or a streetcar?” He asked. “I got caught up in the rain and I’m not in a very familiar neighborhood here.”
He admitted it to him.
"You should be able to find one, once you get past the street."
Annibale tipped his hat. "Thank you."
"You're welcome, thank you, for the tips." The waiter left. "Also, could you tell the chef that he did a great job on the pizza?"
"Of course."
