2:59. One minute until a wave of teenagers ran out of the doors of the small tan school building labelled as Orilon High. One minute until there was no more adult supervision. One more minute until everyone could beat each other up or make out without consequence. One more minute until I could see a particular teenage boy, Chip. I sat at the bottom of the staircase leading to the school, where I always did. I sat picking at some scab when I heard metal doors clash from being abruptly swung open. I turned to see a head of dark curls bouncing towards me. Chip immediately poured three heavy textbooks into my arms. I wobbled a little trying to regain balance.
"Why do you have so many books?" I asked, still struggling to juggle the books.
"I have a lot of homework." He responded.
"And why don't you put these in your backpack?" We both started walking down the road and away from the stairs. He was in front of me.
"Not enough room." He shortly answered, not looking back. I didn't know how he could walk so fast with a seemingly heavier load.
He started to ramble about his day, and the new drama. He said, she said, just the normal stuff. Chip had always been the talkative one, even when I first met him and wanted nothing to do with him. He just kept talking and staying right behind me, like some kind of stray dog. Usually when I acted cold towards people, they stopped trying. They stopped talking to me, and would think I was weird. Not him. When I would snap at him he wouldn't even flinch. He would just smile and keep talking. One day I became so fed up with it. I turned around and asked him why he always followed me. He stared for a moment, but then just shrugged and beamed. It was that response that completely changed me. That simple response. Afterwards, I began to calm down and let him walk beside me. I actually let him in my life, something I had never done before. He somehow broke all the walls I had been building for years. Sometimes he makes me think if they were even that strong to begin with. Now I was picking him up from school everyday. We would walk around town and go get food or go to the movie theater. We spent every day together.
"Do you wanna go get ice cream?" I asked.
"Oh my god, yes. I'm so hungry." We walked down the road to the nearest gas station. Once inside, Chip hopped over to the ice cream tub. I walked around the aisles looking for extra snacks. "You want anything, Rowen?" Chip called. The few people in the store looked annoyed with his yelling.
"Yeah, just a cone, please." I grabbed a bag of chips off the shelf. I started walking around and looking for other snacks. As I was searching, I heard a bell being triggered by an opening door. I glanced to the entrance of the small store to see a pompous looking boy overlooking confidently. He laid eyes on Chip and smirked. He slyly walked over to the tub as I silently watched from a distance.
"Hey Davis." Chip looked up at the blonde boy and his eyes immediately went dark with distaste.
"What do you want, Travis?" He asked darkly. Travis smugly rolled his eyes at the question.
"Now, don't be so happy to see me." Chip groaned and stood up to face the other boy. "I just came to see how you were feeling.. Last night's events must have taken some sort of toll on you." Travis said in a fake sympathetic voice. Chip looked confused, as was I.
"What do you mean..?" He carefully asked, putting his ice cream back into the freezer.
"Oh, come on, you haven't heard?" The blonde boy snickered. "This town is so incredibly small, news gets around fast.. Maybe news isn't as accessible to poor people. Well anyways-" He waved his hand in front of him as I saw the annoyance rise in Chip. "Last night your mommy's diner was absolutely flooded by the police.. Apparently there was a murder there, and a heinous one at that, the guy practically had all his skin on the floor next to his dismembered body." Chip eyes didn't even bat at this.
"You're lying, my mom would've told me." Travis glared.
"Would she..? Because the police are saying, well, she's not exactly innocent." Chip huffed at this. "No, really, check the news if you want. I'm only here to check on how you're doing." The dark haired boy clenched his fists.
"Go find somebody else to torment. I'm not giving in to your lies." Chip started to walk away, but Travis stepped in front of him.
"Listen, Davis, there's a reason I'm telling you this. No one is on you or your mom's side. Every parent in town thinks she's a dirty slut and everyone at school thinks you're... well.." Travis pretended to look through the air for a correct word, only to cut to the insult in an unbothered manner. "Gay. Which isn't very well-liked in this town. I would suggest getting your asses out of here before something even worse happens-"
CRACK.
"OW!" Travis shrieked in pain. I saw blood pour from his hands that covered his face. Chip grabbed my wrist. Before I could react I was being dragged out of the store, and we both broke into a dead sprint. I laughed and whooped, and even jumped a little, from the adrenaline rush. After we were a good ways away from the gas station, I flopped onto the ground. I was still laughing weakly and trying to catch my breath. We both lay there for a while in silence, trying to breathe normally again. I turned toward Chip.
"I never thought you would be the kind of person to break someone's nose." I chuckled. He let out a long sigh.
"Neither did I." He closed his eyes and took a few deep breaths. "He has to be lying, right?" He turned to me in despair.
"Of course. He's the kid that's trying to make like a whole cult against you, right? He's just bullshitting you so you're scared. Stuff like that never happens here."
He still didn't look to comforted, and I was thinking of ways to get his mind off of it.
"Why'd he call you gay?" I inquired. I was pretty sure it was just an insult to make Chip mad, but I wanted the conversation changed.
"He sees me with you a lot. Everyone does. At first they all thought we were related, but when I told them we weren't, then they all thought we were.. you know, a thing." He chuckled a bit. "I don't think it helped that we ran out holding hands." His face went red. I laughed. I stood up, picking up the backpack and books Chip dropped.
"Let's get you home." I said. He got up and took his bag from me. We started to walk down the road back to Chip's house.
"Last one to pull Adriana's ponytail washes the dishes." I challenged.
"You're on."
