I opened up word and began typing up a message that read:
Hello. You probably don't know who I am and that's okay, it's a big University and I can't expect you to know everyone, but that's besides the point here. I found your USB in a computer port in the library. You should really be careful with it, I mean I was tempted to take it for a split second but I didn't. Again I'm going off topic, sorry. I'm really writing this to tell you that I'm a first year doing some of the same subjects that you are so I took the liberty of taking some of your notes, hopefully they'll be helpful in the near future. Also I wanted to say that you've got excellent taste in series here. Any way hope you make it into post grad next year. And all the best with your exams!
I then proceeded to save the message on the the USB under a file labeled 'HELLO :)'. " You doof," came a sound from my right followed by a snicker. Of course Ellie had been looking over my shoulder the entire time as I typed. " So what have you decided on doing Mati," Stuie the voice of sanity asked from my left. " Yeah, I'm going to go through the files to find this person's student number so I can email them. That way they'll know where to find their USB." I clicked through files trying to do just that some of the files I clicked on to were either encrypted or password protected. "How odd, some of these files are encrypted," I said out loud. " What if it's their bank statements, in accordance with SARS all digital bank statements need to be encrypted," Stuie said. "Or maybe they're gathering research on a very sensitive matter for their thesis proposal for post grad," added Ellie. They both had valid point. Weird ones that make me question how I'm friends with them, but valid nonetheless. I nodded my head slowly and continued my search for their student number.
It took be a few minutes but I finally found it on a document labelled 'TUT work'. I opened up my student email and typed in their student number. This was the first part of our not so unique, generic student email address.
I then proceeded to type out the email;
Hey Logan
I hope I found your actual student number and not one that belongs to your tutor or something. Before you go thinking I'm some weirdo, I found your USB at Persons lab. I've handed it in to the Person IT assistant person, hopefully you'll be able to find it there.
All the best with your exams and post grad!
"So he's name is Logan," Stuie said with a smug look on his face. " Don't even Stuie, Logan can be a girl's name too and you putting ideas in Mati's head is not going to end well," Ellie shot at Stuie. You see Ellie as always had an issue with people assume a persons gender based on their name, especially when that name is a more so unisex name, like Taylor, Jamie and you bet it Logan. I've always believed it was because her name is Elliott a traditionally masculine. She used to get bullied because of it. I didn't really know her back then, i just know that it did have an effect on her and the way she viewed the world at the time from how she reacted when we first met.
*Flashback*
I looked out my bedroom window and saw two big moving vans turn into the street. I tied my shoe laces and grabbed my favourite red snap back cap and ran to the neighborhood park, where I knew all my friends would be. "Hey Mati, did you see the vans?" John asked when he saw me. " Yeah, they moved into old Ms Johnson's house,'' Jessie who lived next door to old Ms Johnson's place said. "Yip they did, and I heard they have a kid named Elliot that's around our age,"Keenan, Jessie's older brother said. "Great! Let's go see if he wants to play?" John suggested. We all agreed and rushed off in the direction of old Ms Johnson's old house.
Old Ms Johnson was a sweet little old lady that everyone loved. We were all sad when she moved in with her family down in Pietermaritzburg, but I think this new family will help fill the gap she left.
We all huddled on the front porch as John rang the bell. Nothing happened, no sound nothing. I looked at my friends and then knocked loudly on the door three times. Just then the door flug open pushing me into the bushes to reveal two tall teenage girls. The one with blonde hair bent down and asked, " Hey little guys what can I help you with?" " Does a kid named Elliott stay here?" Jessie asked trying to look past them into their house. "ELLIOTT IT'S FOR YOU!" The burnett teenager yelled as she made her way up the stairs.
Little footsteps were heard running down the stairs. I finally made it out of the bushes to be greeted by two dirty blonde pigtails. Keenan looked at the blonde teenager and asked, " Is Elliott coming?" "I am Elliott" the girl with pigtails said with an eye roll. I caught her hand just as she was about to turn around. " Hi Elliot, the name's Mati. Wanna come play with us?" I asked with a smile on my face. " I am not a smelly, dirty boy like you and I definitely don't want to play with smelly, dirty boys like you either!" She exclaimed as she pushed me with all her might.
I fell backwards and cap fell off my head. " Mati are you alright?!" All my friends flocked toward me. I started chuckle as I got up. " Of course your not a boy, none of these boys would have ever pushed me so hard," I said while I shook out my shoulder length, honey-brown, curly mane.
"You're girl," Elliott said stunned. The feeling was reciprocated by a few of my friends who weren't aware of this detail. "But, but, but.... " She trailed on.
"Mati, why didn't you tell us you're a girl? " Jessie asked as if though I had withheld a major secret from him. "Not that it should make a difference Jessie, but I thought you know when I told all of y'all I go to St. Andrew's. It's an all girl's school," I said trying to clear the confusion with my friends. I caught Keenan snicker behind everyone. He clearly found it funny that the rest of our friends were being so slow. " But your name's Matty, as in short for Matthew!" Elliott suddenly piped up. I shot her a look, " No my name is not Matty as in short for Matthew, it Mati as in short for Matilde. I go by Mati because everyone mispronounces my name as Matilda," I said with an eye roll.
"You go to St Andrew's too! That's awesome all my sister's and I will be going there too from the start of the new term!" The blonde teenager said. " This will be the perfect opportunity for you to make some, while um, a friend!" She continued. " But Odette, I don't think she'll want to be my friend after what I just did.." Elliott said in a small voice. "Are you kidding me Ellie, they came all this way just to be your friend. Maybe if you apologised you could be friends with them all," Odette said bending down to pick up my cap and place it on my head
And so was the start of out beautifully friendship
