CHAPTER TEN
“Alright Kattie, please get all of these booted up and ready to go. It will be your job to scan all the frequencies that the warriors here on the planet, might try to use to communicate with their command ship, and jam them.” Conner instructed.
“Oh, is that all? Maybe I could also rework gravity also, that way they could just float off into space.” Kattie replied with all the sarcasm she could muster.
“Kattie, Mr. Chambers does not make mistakes on the ones he chooses to assist him. The program is similar to one you are used to running. It also has on screen instructions if you get a little confused. You can get started now and it will give you a brief tutorial. I am sure it will take you no time to get comfortable with it.”
Kattie gave him a look that showed she was not convinced.
“Last year when you were assigned to write a program to block certain viruses that had been plaguing the schools computers, did you hesitate to take that on? What about two years ago when you needed to figure out how to block…”
“How did you know about that? Never mind, I will see what I can do.” Kattie said trying to hide her blushing face.
Conner now moved back over to speak with Neville.
“Right, now Neville, once Kattie has all her computer programs on line, you will need to link up you’re here with something that Mr. Chambers called an inner-fast link.”
“Neville who had still been thinking about being a kid watching his grandfather work with this machine, was jerked back into reality.
“Say what?”
Neville’s expression was one of total confusion. Conner did not say a word, but just continued to stare at him. Slowly, like layers of paint being striped off a beautiful piece of wood, the confusion began to melt off his face. He moved over closer to the machine and placed his hands on top. Conner could tell that once again the memories of what went on all those years ago was once again coming back to Neville.
“Remember to not start anything until all of Katie’s computers are up and running.” Conner warned.
Kattie worked through all the tutorials and practiced a few of the examples. It was true she was getting fairly comfortable with what she was doing. However, when ever she began to think how important her role was and what was at stake, her doubts would start to erode her confidence.
“Conner, If Mr. Chambers has all this power over things, why does he need us, or at least get someone a lot more qualified to help?” Kattie asked.
Conner shook his head.
“I do not know or ask why about anything that he does. I just know that everything always works out for the best when all involved do what they are asked in the exact way they are asked to do it. I have only seen one time when things went wrong. The reason was that one involved thought they had a better way of doing the task Mr. Chambers assigned them. Before you ask, yes things did end up okay in the end, however their was a lot more loss of life than there would have been, if the instructions were followed. I guess that is why now, Mr. Chambers chooses those more willing to follow instructions, instead of those who have more knowledge in areas they are assigned.”
Conner paused a moment.
“The human race is not unique in havening a prideful attitude. Take our adversary for instance. Her race got along fine with other species in their area of the universe, until they learned of Mr. Chambers and his abilities. Those of his species did not all have the same amount of talents that he did. However, Charlie’s species refused to believe that. Because his species was scattered in and among all species in that area, all other species began to desire the power they believed they all possessed.”
Conner paused again.
“This is a very long story, and we have a lot of work ahead of us. Lets just say that there are less than a handful of Mr. Chamber’s species left, and none have half the power he does, and no, I am not one of them. I travel with him, because I know nothing, but I am willing to do anything for him.”
Conner now spoke up so Neville could hear also.
“We don’t have much time. It is important that we work as a team. Our main function to begin with will be to cut off all communication between the warriors that are sent to destroy, Robin hood, and the Lone Ranger, and the ship that sent them.”
“Conner, I am nothing more than a Bar keep.” Neville complained.
“And I a Collage student,” Kattie added.
Conner smiled.
“Look folks I was, and still am a nobody. Yes, each of us have some talents and abilities, but Mr. Chambers only uses ones that are willing to be led. Besides. he said that you two were exactly what he needed. So, pay close attention to everything I tell you, and everything will work out fine.
About that time multiple lights lit on several boards that were near where Conner was standing.
“Okay, It looks like Robin Hood, and the Lone Ranger are in position, and the warrior’s ships are just about in range to transport them down. Right, these next few hours are going to be quite busy.” Conner stated as he rushed to get everywhere they needed to be.
“Alright now, pay close attention. Kattie boot up all the computers that are next to the ones I showed you, those are all linked together and will be your responsibility.
“Okay kiddies, story time is over, we have a war to prepare for.”
“What is your role in this?” Neville asked.
“To keep you two on track and have plan B ready if necessary.”
“Plan B?” Neville asked.
Conner shook his head.
“Believe me you do not want to know.”
