chapter 2

chapter 2

Jan 02, 2022

Kensuke was surprised, to say the least. Of course, the last thing he'd expect while investigating a brutal murder case was the possibility of him landing on top of an insanely handsome guy.

However, being the professional officer he was, he immediately gained his composure and got up, dusting himself.

Flashing his ID card in front of the man, he said "Ishida Kensuke, police."

The guy frowned as he got up from the ground. "Oh? you're from the police? What are the police doing in this dead building? I don't remember doing anything suspicious..."

Kensuke was baffled. His police instincts immediately kicked in and he was sure that this man was related to the case one way or the other.

"Your name?" asked Kensuke, ignoring the rambling.

"Haru."

"Full name."

"Nakamura Haru."

Kensuke sighed as he noted down the man's name in his notepad. "Okay, Nakamura-san, you're going to have to come to the police station with me for questioning."

Haru tilted his head, confused. "What? but why? I haven't done anything wrong."

"Quit the dumb act," said Kensuke, his voice cold. "There have been 3 murders in this apartment and you're the only one who's here, alive."

The confused and blank look from Haru's face was immediately replaced with a serious one. "Are you telling me that you would rather have me dead?"

Kensuke's eyes widened. "I have implied nothing of that sort. I apologize if I have offended you in any way with my words but you are still required at the police station."

"When you say 3 murders...those 3 ladies?" asked Haru.

Kensuke nodded. "yes, 104, 204, and 304."

"Cause of death?"

Kensuke narrowed his eyes and said, "I'm not obliged to tell you that."

Haru's serious face went back to a blank face and said, "Doesn't matter, I'll see it in the news anyways."

Kensuke frowned. Something was off with this man. I mean, was it really this normal for someone to remain so calm despite the fact that three gruesome murders had taken place? That too within one night.

"I don't have time for such useless chatter, please accompany me to the station."

Haru yawned. "You want me to come out like this? I haven't even brushed my teeth."

Kensuke stared at him in disbelief. "No, jeez. Go brush or teeth or whatever. We'll give you only 30 minutes."

Before Haru could reply, Kensuke walked out of his apartment, pulling his fellow constable with him.

"Such a pain in the ass," murmured Kensuke, standing in front of the stairs. "I want you to give me all the details of this man, okay? I want it asap."

The constable nodded and ran downstairs, leaving Kensuke alone.

Kensuke opened his cigarette pack, lighting one, he placed it in his mouth. From what Kensuke had gathered. this was going to be a tough case to crack. The evidence wasn't conclusive. The women lived pretty much-secluded lives, cut off from family and friends. Not to mention, the only connection that seemed to be shown from these women was that they lived in the building.

Now, one would think, that the murders happened cause they were targeting the building owner or something but here came the problem. There was a survivor. The only male who lived in the building. Nakamura Haru.
When Kensuke was given a very brief report on the crime, no one had mentioned anything about a Nakamura Haru. Which was a big, big mistake on their side. For all they knew, Haru could be the killer and this miss would've given him plenty of time to get rid of evidence inside his home.

Suddenly, Kensuke saw a cigarette in front of his, lighting theirs using his. Kensuke backed away slightly in surprise and saw Haru, with a cigarette in his mouth.

"Damn, I only wanted the heat," said Haru, shrugging.

"Are you done?" asked Kensuke.

"Yes, can't you see how handsome I've become," replied Haru, dramatically flipping his hair.

Kensuke didn't react even one inch and took out his walkie-talkie and said, "Send a search team up to the fourth floor, I'm bringing our prime suspect down."

"Wait a damn minute," said Haru. "Prime suspect? You mean me?"

"Do you see anyone else here?" said Kensuke, rolling his eyes.

"What the fck? I didn't do anything."

"In my career of 7 years, you have no idea how many times I've heard that sentence, plus, I'd appreciate it if you used appropriate language."

Haru sighed. "I knew that the police were boring people. Appropriate language, are you my mother or what...Kensuke-san?" Haru read off of Kensuke's badge.

Kensuke's eyes widened. "Excuse me but we've just met and it's rude to call me using my first name. I'd appreciate it if you called me Ishida-san"

"Boring." was the only reply Haru gave.
-------------------------------------------

they finally reached the police station and Kensuke was done.

and when he said done, he meant absolutely fcking done.

Turns out, Nakamura Haru didn't know how to keep his mouth shut. The drive from the apartment complex to the police station wasn't long. Just 20 minutes. However, within that 20 minutes, Haru had told everyone in the vehicle, about what he ate for the past 2 days, what kind of pets he had and how he threw his phone out of the window when he saw a small bug on it.

But maybe, thought Kensuke, this excessive talking trait of Haru would be good when it came to questioning.

Kensuke shook his head though. Who was he kidding? While Haru did seem like an excessive chatterbox, Kensuke had observed how Haru had skillfully not mentioned anything significant about his personal life. No details on his job. No details on his family or his love life. If he had one, that is.

The car parked at the station and Kensuke was the first one to get out. He put the handcuffs on Haru's hand and pulled him out of the vehicle, with an officer on each side of him.

This case was complicated. Kensuke knew that the minute he arrived on site.

And this man was the only way to solve the case.
-------------------------------------------

Kensuke refused to waste any time. He immediately put Haru into the questioning room and took a seat in front of him.

"I'm going to ask you some questions, I want you to answer them honestly."

Haru stared straight at Kensuke, sending shivers down Kensuke's spine. Gone was the goofy Haru. Now what Kensuke was looking at was a serious Haru, someone who had a plan in mind.

"Well, I'll try to," said Haru, giving Kensuke a small smile.

"Okay, what's your name and age."

"Nakamura Haru. 26."

"Name of parents?"

"None."

"Sorry?"

"Uh, I actually ran away from the orphanage. You know when I was 13. Haha, no one wanted to adopt a troublesome kid like me so I realized in this huge world, I had no one but myself. Hence, I ran away."

Kensuke blinked. A small dread filled his mind. This wasn't good, Haru had no parents, so finding out about him was not going to be an easy task.

"Name of the orphanage?"

"I don't remember."

Kensuke opened his mouth but closed it, deciding not to press further on this matter, cause now, he had more important questions to ask.

"What is your job? and the name of the company?"

Haru blinked. "I refuse to answer."

Irritation swept over Kensuke. Why was Haru acting so difficult? This just increased his suspicion of him.

"Okay. Then, what were you doing yesterday night?"

"I refuse to answer."

Kensuke narrowed his eyes. "What did you eat for dinner yesterday?"

"Carbonara"
Okay, Kensuke was going to kill this bitch. Breathe, breathe, repeated Kensuke in his mind. He was a dignified police officer and was NOT going to lose his mind over a difficult suspect.

"Did you kill the three women living in your apartment complex?"

Unblinking, Haru said, "No."

"Okay, that's great. Then, how about you cooperate with us, okay? Makes things easier for you and for me. How does that sound?"

Haru leaned forward, putting his handcuffed hands on the table.

"I will cooperate but only on one condition."

....What?
