The strong rays of sunlight came through the curtains of the window of my room and hit me directly in the face. After a few minutes, the alarm I had programmed to wake up on my cell phone started ringing, it was 9:30 on a Saturday morning. I raised my recumbent body and for a few seconds sat on the mattress of my bed while I turned off the alarm on my cell phone, then I stood up, picked up the clothes that were on a chair which I had chosen to wear today, and walked out of my room towards the bathroom.
What happened yesterday after the last words that girl said to me? Once that girl's APA turned around, she disconnected from it and let it walk in automatic mode, so I followed it from behind. The APA walked to the building designated for first-year students and walked up the stairs to the third floor and entered the classroom of class 1-B. He then sat at the desk located at the end of the fourth row by the window facing the hallway. Finally, I left the school after 18:50. At that time, it was impossible for me to know what the girl's name was.
If we recount the current situation, the person responsible for the email turned out to be a first-year student, although I still find it hard to believe, she confessed her feelings for me yesterday, and finally, she met me once again at school today at 12:00 in the afternoon to show me her real self. However, there are a couple of words that have been stuck in my head since yesterday. At a certain point in our little conversation, the words reproduced by the girl's APA sounded like she was about to break down emotionally and burst into tears "What must have happened to her at that moment?"
After putting in order all the events that had happened yesterday, I got out of the shower and got dressed.
My house, which was slightly larger than normal compared to the others, was only inhabited by my parents and me. After leaving the bathroom and walking down the second-floor hallway, I came across the door to my parents' bedroom. As I stood in front of it for a couple of seconds, it slid automatically due to the sensors that picked up my figure. When I looked up, I found my mother's body lying on her bed with her APV (Advanced Personal Visors) covering her eyes, my father was also lying next to her on the bed wearing his APV.
After letting out a small sigh, I went down the stairs to the second floor and walked towards the kitchen to prepare my breakfast. Then, just as I was about to finish, I heard slow footsteps coming down the stairs.
—What are you doing up so early on a Saturday morning…?
It was my mother who, with her hair messed up and scratching her head, talked to me.
—That's what I should be asking you! Unlike you two, I always get up early for breakfast.
—It is true...
In between a yawn my mother said to me as she headed to the kitchen, then turned on the electric kettle to make herself a cup of coffee.
—By the way, why are you wearing your school uniform on a Saturday?
"Should I tell my mother why I'm going to school today?" That was the first question that went through my head "How would she react if I told her?" After hesitating for a few seconds, I decided to tell her.
—I-I'm meeting a student at school today to discuss some things....
—...Ah?
That's what my mother said in response, then burst out laughing.
—I'm just telling you the truth!
She was silent for a few seconds while she watched my serious face, after trying to hold back another laugh that was about to come out, she said to me.
—All right, all right, I believe you. So, what's the name of the student you're going to talk to?
—I-I don't know what his name is yet....
Embarrassed, I answered her.
Not a second passed and as a result of my answer, my mother burst out laughing even more.
—You're going to get together with a girl who goes to the same school as you and you don't even know her name!? You must have dreamt it and woke up thinking it was real?
My mother continued to laugh as she touched her stomach and wiped her tears, then she said to me.
—Don't tell me you're still trying to make friends with the students at your school? Your aunt Hikaru has really influenced you.
The words that came out of my mother's mouth, immediately upset me.
—I can assure you that this girl will not be meeting you today.
In a serious tone my mother said as if she was taking it for granted.
—How can you be so sure of that?
It was obvious that my mother was just following her logic like everyone else here in Japan, she had no idea of everything that had happened yesterday. The words that girl said to me as she opened up her feelings felt real to me and I was confident that she would attend the meeting today.
—How can I be so sure? You should know firsthand how people in this country act and how important APA are to society. What makes you think that a girl whose name you don't even know would dare to change that mentality just for you? Haven't you thought it might be a joke…?
At all those words, I just pressed my lips together.
—Why don't you just go back and start using your APA again? You're already sixteen years old, if you continue to act the same way you do now in school, you're going to have the same or even worse life in the future than the one you're leading. What will you do when you get into college? What will you do when you get a job…? Will you continue to act the same way?
—I-I'm...
—Also, I am already bored of receiving emails from the school asking me why my son attends classes without using his APA, even though he has already been given one by the school.
—I'm leaving now…
I interrupted my mother and walked to the couch in the main room to grab my bag.
—You're leaving already? But you haven't even had breakfast.
—I think I've lost my appetite..., you can eat it yourself.
After I had affirmed my bag over my shoulder, I walked to the front door of my house and without even saying goodbye, I walked out. Then I looked up at the bright clear sky and innocently in my mind I said to myself, "I'm sure that girl is coming today, right?"
That Saturday afternoon, the girl who told me to meet her at the main entrance of the school, never showed up.
