Over the course of the almost hour long ride Jenna was asleep. That was all to say, when they arrived it was almost three in the afternoon as Lyla tried to maneuver the gravel road like her mom always does, finally getting to concrete, there were already a few cars there, one for each of her cousins and presumably their families.
Lyla takes one last deep breath, putting her head against the steering wheel, trying not to make it beep as the car was still on.
"Ly, it's going to be alright, you're going to be strong." The girl chuckles, bringing her head up just to lean it over and kiss the other. They stay like that for at least a minute before they part, getting out of the car and walking towards the small house. She could already see through the glass window in the foyer that they were looking at her, sucking in a puff of air she grabs Jenna's hand, intertwining their fingers. Making both their hands slightly shake.
When they enter the house the first thing they do is take off their shoes, as per common rule. After they head to where the rest of her family is, Her brother, Mike or Michael was standing next to her parents.
"Why are you holding that girl's hand?" Her Uncle asks, the other adults and cousins nod.
"Because she's my girlfriend, what fucking more do you want." Her youngest cousin Lilly gasps.
"Lyla said a no-no word."
"That's against the bible, you should be with a man." Lyla lowers her gaze to put it back up against the rest of her extended family, turning to Jenna as she softens her gaze and whispers to get behind her. Jenna nods and does as told, their hands still together like glue.
"Yet God said that he loves everyone, the dick who wrote the bible is a prick."
"Lyla! Language."
"Amy, Lilly, out please." They do as told and go out of the room and out of the house.
"Still you shouldn't be with a girl, I say you break up with her."
"I'm not going to, you fuckers are going to accept it and appreciate that I'm at least loved." Her family goes silent before looking at each other. Lyla looks back at Jenna who feels useless, she feels like she should be standing up for her too but this is her family, she can't go up against that. "Jen." She whispers. The girl looks up from the old carpeting to the watery blue eyes of the other, almost making her want to cry as well. "Can I kiss you?" Jenna nods, coming out a little behind the other.
"You're not going to get into heaven then." One of her cousins states.
"I don't care, I bet y'all have sinned anyway, also I'm goddamn twenty two, I can do whatever I want with my life, and you know WHAT I'm going to show you what I did with my life." She spins the other girl to her, kissing her while gripping her lower back, giving the middle finger with her other hand to the rest. Out of the corner of her eye when they were done she could see Carly, her husband, Andrew, and his wife all have small smiles on their faces.
Her family is either in anger or pure tears. This was because they were now turning against Lyla's parents and why they were raising "Satan's spawn" while her dad was defending their family name.
"Lyla can I talk to you, your girlfriend can come with you, I don't think she's safe right now to be out in the open." Her cousin who was only four years apart slightly has a warm tint to his smile, he leads them away from the screaming feud across the living room and down the hall to the craft room. The three of them could still hear the screams but they weren't ear bleeding level of loud.
"Andrew I know you're going to yell at me--" She's taken aback when he hugs her, they were almost the same height, well you couldn't really say that as their height was a five inch difference.
"You should be proud of who you are Lyla, you should. I know we haven't been close in recent years but I've watched your specials and all the stories you've told and..." He sniffs, gripping the girl harder but not hard enough that he crushes her bones. "I love you."
Lyla didn't expect this response and hugs the boy back, sharing her part in crying. "I love you too and thank you." Her other cousin, Carly walks in to share their hug. The girl looks up at them both. "So a-are you guys on my s-side?" They both smile and grasp her hand.
"Always have, always will, and your girlfriend here, she'll always be welcome to this family."
"Well our part of the family." Andrew clarifies. Lyla looks back at Jenna and motions with her head to get closer to the three.
"We won't bite." Carly jokes.
"Heh, thanks." Jenna gets closer as she was motioned to do, though she could feel herself getting scanned by the two.
"She's a pretty one isn't she."
"Yeah, I'm glad I can call her mine." Lyla drapes an arm around the girl. A warm feeling invades the girl's chest which makes her smile.
"Well, does this girl have a name?" Andrew asks.
"I'm Jenna." She sticks out a hand to the boy who shakes it with a smile.
"It's nice to meet you Jenna, I'm Andrew and this is my sister, Carly." He passes her hand over to the girl who shares the same smile.
"You're in good hands with Lyla here."
"Thank you both." A silence reeks through the room until Andrew shifts his weight from one leg to the other.
"You know that kiss was very bold of you."
"Thanks. You think they've stopped screaming at my parents yet?"
"Maybe."
"Also do you know why Britney called us here?" Lyla asks as she pulls up chairs for the four of them, sitting down once they're put into place. The rest follow suit.
"From what she told my mom was that she wanted to just check up on all of us, Grandpa was put up to it but since he's-"
"Basically a boomer since he can't operate a phone besides a flip phone."
"Yep." The four of them share a chuckle until the screaming gets closer to them.
"Shit. Guys we're going to have to go to the shop." Andrew grits his teeth as he could see the flash of his mother's dark hair with light grey strands.
Lyla puts a hand on his shoulder and shakes her head. "Don't, you guys take care of Jen, I'll meet you guys up there."
"Have you been watching The Walking Dead?"
"Yeah." They both chuckle before the comedian returns to be serious. "But still, take her, I got this, it's my battle anyway."
"Alright, we'll see you up there." The two talk Jenna into going with them, which is what she does and Lyla, in a dramatic matter of seconds, goes towards the rest of her family.
"Do you guys really wanna know what I am, I already know you don't want a homosexual in your family."
"Fine, let the demon speak."
"I'm bisexual, it means I like both he's and she's, the trans community is included and if they identify as non-binary then I will still love them. So in turn I'm half gay and half straight."
"Then why are you dating a girl?" One of her aunt's asked.
"Because I picked that choice, it still means I can be attracted to boys and girls."
"Does she at least make you happy?"
"Always have, always will." The rest of her family takes in this new information for a minute, finally settling down and going into a huddle, she slips past them and finds her parents. Her mom was crying on the floor.
"Momma, you okay?"
"Did I do something wrong? I raised you to be a strong woman and look where you're at, you make more in tours and gigs than all your cousins combined."
"Mom, you didn't do anything wrong. You did amazing in fact, look where I am, I live in NYC, I have a girlfriend who loves me so much, she's going to law school and is going to get her law degree this year, you can be proud of me and you should."
"I love you Lyla."
"I love you too mom." The girl hugs her mother and tries to stop her from crying but she lets her dad and brother take over after a bit. "I'll be in the shop with Andrew and Carly if you need me." She whispers so the others couldn't hear. Once her mother nods she turns and hastily puts her shoes on, darting out of the door.
She ran up the hill and towards the open door of the shop, her hard breathing was enough to alert the others who were in the last room.
"Lyla! Did they hurt you at all?"
"N-No, had to run from them as they weren't looking." She rubs away a small piece of spit that dripped down her chin.
"Good girl, bout to be as fast as me." Andrew smirks.
"Ha I bet that."
Jenna looks over towards them and sees Lyla doubled over, or at least to sort of, she leaned forward rather than bent down. Nonetheless she runs over and hugs her.
"Lyla we shouldn't have come and you know that." Tears rushed down her face as she mumbled her words into the girl's chest.
"I know but I can't hide it forever, soon we could get married, what would I say to them then?"
"Can I be your best man?" 'Andrew asks before getting a slap on the head from his sister.
"Now's not the time."
"Sure Drew."
"Then if we're on the topic..."
"Car, you can be one of the bridesmaids, I'm sure of it."
"Ly, we shouldn't be thinking this far ahead, what if... What if we don't get to that point?"
"Then... I will do everything in my power to get us to that point, I love you with my whole heart." She gripped Jenna hard just like Andrew did, but not hard enough to take all the air out of her lungs.
"I love you too." Then in a matter of seconds their lips pressed together, it was wet and sloppy just what both of them needed at the moment. The cousins smile as they glance before turning around, wanting to give the lovebirds some privacy. "But we came out."
"I know, I shouldn't have brought you along with me if this was how it was going to turn out."
"But we came out to people for the first time."
"And?"
"Even though it had a bad impact it was still good, they'll learn to get used to it eventually even when we do marry."
"So you are jumping on that train then." Jenna smirks.
"Maybe." And with that they go back to kissing.
