Oct. 2, 2015 Fri.
It was now club rush, everyone was setting up their spots in their designated area. Jacob, being the tallest, was standing above the crowd, waiting for an empty spot. He spotted one way in the end corner, near the music room. It was small and barely noticeable.
“Over there guys!” Jacob said.
“Alright team, let’s get it!” Adrian said.
They got a little small desk they had borrowed from Mr. Harris. They tried to tape the banner to the desk but figured no one would see the sign. So they all agreed that Jacob should carry the sign. Jacob started swaying the sign chanting “WRITING CLUB! COME JOIN THE WRITING CLUB!”
Natalie
Meanwhile, across from the club rush was the cafeteria, divided by the cement stage where they held Friday festivities, such as music or dances from the cheer team. Sitting at one of the lunch tables was Natalie and Emma. Emma was talking to her other friends while Natalie zoned out. She stared in the direction of Jacob, thinking of ways to approach. He stood there talking with his friends.
"Doesn't that sound like fun Nat?" Emma asked her, disrupting her focus.
"Oh I'm sorry Em, what was that?" Natalie asked.
"What are you looking at?" Emma asked, looking over Natalie. She sees Jacob and friends. "Oooooh~," she says in a cheeky way. "let's go talk to him!" She said enthusiastically.
“I'm still thinking about what to say.”
“You're Natalie Mendoza, you're so beautiful and charming! He should be lucky to even speak to you!”
“Mom always says to plan things through,” Natalie said to her.
She turned from Emma to look back at Jacob, who was now waving his “Writing Club” banner.
“Just like that Emma, I now have a reason.”
Audrey
“This isn’t working, we are too out of the way,” Looz said impatiently.
“Should I wave the sign with more energy?” Jacob asked. He proceeds to shake the sign vigorously. “WRITING CLUB! COME JOIN WRITING CLUB!”
“I think that's too much shaking Jacob,” Adrian said.
“Well, here, I have an idea,” Sam says to the group. “Why don't some of us go out and go up to people and ask them to join?”
“Won't that be a bit too pushy?” Audrey asked.
"Who’s to stop us?!" Sam assures.
"Maybe Samantha has got a point," Adrian agreed.
"Well, one of you guys can do that, I'll man the fort while you guys go," said Looz, sitting down in her chair.
"Jacob, why don't you come give me some shade," Looz said, gesturing for him to block the sun.
"Sure thing punk," Jacob replied.
"Alright then, let's go get some aspiring authors!" Adrian said to Sam and Audrey.
They parted from the pitiful excuse of a booth. Jacob continued to chant, "WRITING CLUB! JOIN THE WRITING CLUB!" Looz sat down with her feet on the table, looking at her phone.
"Writing club, you say?" Natalie asked, tapping his shoulder to get his attention. Jacob turned swiftly around, a bit flustered.
"Oh hey! It's you, from a couple of days ago!" Jacob said.
"Yes, I remember you too, I didn't quite get your name last time I'm sorry."
"It's Jacob, how 'bout you?"
"Natalie, but you can call me Nat."
"I'm her best friend Emma. You can call me Em, or anytime," Emma said coming up behind Natalie. She gave him an almost cartoonish grin and wink.
"It's nice to meet you guys," Jacob said nervously, smiling. There was an awkward silence just for a bit until Looz broke it.
"Hey buddy, ask her if she's going to join the club!" She said, nudging him.
"Oh yeah! Uh hey would you like to join our writing club? If you want to of course." He asked, handing her the sign up sheet.
"Ooh, a club. I'd love to join!" Natalie grabs the clipboard and signs her name.
"I'm gonna join too!" Emma signs her name as well with a flourish. A crowd starts growing around them as more and more of Natalie's friends see her. They all decide to sign up with her and they all start chatting it up with Natalie, Emma and Jacob. Looz is having the people sign in orderly fashion. Audrey, Sam and Adrian return having had some signatures from people.
"Woah what's all this?" Audrey asked Looz in surprise.
"Queen bee and her drones came by to sign up," Looz said, nodding in Natalie's direction.
"Natalie?" Adrian said with a smile.
"Wow I never thought she'd take a fancy to writing." Sam said.
"Yea, bet it looks real good on college applications tho," Looz said.
"This is great! I never imagined it would go this great! Not in a million years!" Audrey said excitedly, bouncing up and down in place.
"Yeah looks like we have over 30 signatures, that's practically a full class!" Adrian said.
"Great." Looz said with a sigh as she leaned back in her chair, "stuck in another crowded class after school."
"Oh hush!" Sam said to Looz smacking her shoulder.
"This is so exciting! I can't wait for our first meeting!" Audrey exclaimed.

Their First Meeting
"Maybe they're just late," Adrian said, consoling a glum looking Audrey.
"On the bright side Dri, Natalie and Emma showed up," Sam said, pointing to them. They were talking with Jacob.
"I'm sure writing wasn't at the top of the list of reasons they joined," Looz whispered, nudging Sam.
"Yeah I guess it's fine, I just wish we had one more member," Audrey said.
"Well like I said maybe-" Adrian was cut off. A girl walked in. She was petite and athletic looking with light brown skin and big curly hair that went a little past her shoulders. She wore huge round glasses on her face and was wearing dark leggings, running shoes and a light gray form-fitting hoodie. She carried a duffel bag that wrapped over her left shoulder.
"Hi! Is this the writing club?" She asked.
Audrey looked up with hope and surprise in her eyes. They all glanced her way.
"Yes it is!" Adrian said enthusiastically. He continued.
"This is Audrey, our club president, Sam our spokesperson, Looz our treasurer, Jacob over there is our other spokesperson, next to him is Natalie and Emma our club members, and I'm Adrian the Vice President."
"Slow down there guy," Looz said, "When did we decide on these roles?"
"I just thought it made sense."
"It's nice to meet you all, I'm Danielle," she said.
"Welcome and thank you for joining our club!" Audrey said. She looked more optimistic and now had a warm smile upon her face.
