Panel 1 [Lawrence steps outside of the outfitter and is back by the docks again, ships bobbing in the water alongside]
Panel 2 [He looks up at a ship's masts with a sort of hopeful wonder. He hasn’t seen so many ships at once. A conversation comes off screen, but not one that he’s listening to.]
JOSUÉ:
That chowder tasted like something out of a gutter, Ezra. Why’d you take me there? Why’d you let me eat it? How were you able to eat it?
EZRA:
‘You’ll have worse vittles on the whaler, laddie’.
Panel 3 [EZRA CARTER and JOSUÉ CABRAL are walking on the right side of the panel towards the camera, and Lawrence is walking in the foreground to the left with his back to the camera, still looking up at the ships. EZRA is a Black man in his mid 20s, tall and with an athletic build, and JOSUÉ is an Azorean man in his early 20s, shorter and skinnier. They’re both wearing working clothes. Josué has his arms flung out at his sides in exasperation. Ezra is laughing.]
JOSUÉ:
Does she ALWAYS say that?
EZRA:
Far as I know. Every time I come back the chowder’s never no better. Sellin’ ‘longside whaleships is all part of her business.
Panel 4 [Lawrence, not paying attention, collides with Josué’s shoulder, spinning to face him with his hands held out apologetically, Josué is also holding his hand up to steady him. Ezra looks on with mild surprise]
LAWRENCE:
Ah, sorry—
JOSUÉ:
S’fine.
Panel 5 [Ezra and Josué pause in the foreground, with Josué turning his head to watch Lawrence’s back as he keeps walking.
JOSUÉ:
Where do you suppose the bumpkin’s from?
Panel 6 [Ezra also turns to look at Lawrence leaving, leaning his head to the side and squinting]
EZRA:
Mmm. Vermont. Some place the sea ain't touchin’.
JOSUÉ:
Sure. Can’t imagine anyone around here looking at a boat like that.
Going to Weather is a 3 Act nautical ghost story set on a New England whaleship. Updates in batches monthly.
1843. New Bedford is the city lighting the world, with its wealth drawn bleeding from the ocean depths. Whale oil lamplight glazes domestic life and spermaceti candles burn long at the tables of the rich. Their warm glow belies the brutal work that set them there.
From the chaotic harbor bristling with ship masts, a cobbled-together crew boards the whaleship Valor bound for the Pacific. Among them is Lawrence Manner, a landsman hoping to shed his onshore life, and Ezra Carter, a second mate striving for a captaincy in a nation that has few other options for him.
The ship’s master—Barzillai Waite—has built a reputation of great success, returning time and time again with thousands of barrels of oil in the Valor’s hold. But the Captain’s lucky image is dogged by a tale that he was once the sole survivor of a wreck at sea. The Valor, now on her fourth voyage, somehow feels older than she should. And out on the isolated stretch of ocean, as the tryworks smoke and bubble, an unseen and unwelcome passenger begins to make itself felt.
