This is just a feeling, but I suspect most people during this time found it very shameful if their daughter became pregnant outside of marriage, so I can imagine the jue yuan would be used as a way to explain an unwedded woman's pregnancy without being too much an embarrassment on the family. Pink dolphins serve a similar role in some south American folklore. Next episode on 02/03!
