Our main character obviously has very limited fighting experience. The way he's holding the pipe over his shoulder is not a good way to hold it for effective strikes (better to swing from the hip), and yelling to get Demon Lady's attention is a terrible idea. Sneaking up on her probably isn't going to work - we don't know what sort of supernatural senses she has - but he still may have been able to surprise her a little bit. Yelling removes his advantage of being at her back.
