The Pharaoh's Master

Chapter One

Chapter One

Jan 30, 2022

(Read prologue first)
The modern day

After hiking for two miles in the endless desert we reached the dig site. There were people everywhere moving this and hauling that. Everyone was working so hard. It's been about a week since this site was discovered by none other than yours truly, Sparrow Grey. It was mostly just grunt work at this point, just moving sand and dirt from one place to another. I have a feeling that we are onto something big here.

“HEY OVER HERE!” yelled Melody Thatcher, my longtime friend from high school.

As soon as I reached her I saw why she was so excited, the rooftops of an entire city, perfectly preserved at that. We looked at each other in amazement as the cityscape seemed to stretch further and further out into the vast desert.

“Wow Mel, this is amazing! How many buildings do you think that there are?”

“I can’t say for sure as of yet, rough estimate I’d say about 50-100 small to large buildings.” The entire time she was smiling, giddy from the feeling of discovery. Melody is one of the best archeologists out there, with many huge discoveries under her belt. We make a great team, our supervisors noticed that and paired us together on sites often.

We started the excavation carefully because of the amazing state of preservation. More and more of the city was becoming clear, and it was vast. We had a huge team, so the work was moving along at a steady pace.

How could a city of this size not have been mentioned in any of the hieroglyphics? I thought to myself and went to wander around the city to get the layout. Everyone was buzzing from the massive discovery, running from building to building. That was until we found a skeleton, the air suddenly went still. We took pictures and carefully cleaned the bones, I took note of the amount of trauma I was seeing on the bones.

After cleaning the skeleton I was called over to the first building that had been fully unearthed. It was amazing, but disheartening because of the state of the belongings inside. Almost everything was destroyed besides the bed and a couple of large jars.

“Whoa, what happened here” I turned around and saw Melody standing in the entryway.

“I don’t know, but I want to find out.” Looking around I noticed that the way things were scattered, and the amount of items in the moderate house. “Is it just me or does this look like a home invasion?” And I looked up at Melody.

“It’s either that or someone left in a hurry.” Melody said while looking at the broken pottery.

The sun started to set so we had to call it a day and return to the campsite that we had made nearby to go over today's discoveries in more detail. We gathered around the campfire to start preparing dinner. Once everything was finished we finally started to talk about today’s discoveries.

“Did anyone else notice the gashes on the bones of the skeleton we found today?” I asked the group.

“I took a look at them under some lights, and they definitely were cut with some sort of blade. That isn’t what killed them though, they look like defensive wounds to me.” Said Jun Yang, the anthropologist on site.

“I thought something looked off in the house we unearthed too.” Melody threw in.

“Yeah, makes me wonder what really happened here.” I said while staring into the fire.

After that the conversation naturally drifted away from work, and we all started to get ready for bed and headed to our individual tents. Laying down I stared at the ceiling of the tent, thinking about today’s events.

Suddenly my vision went black even though my eyes were open, and I found that I could no longer speak. I was terrified, the voices started, not aloud but in my mind.

“At long last, the lost master has arrived.

You have been chosen by fate,

To guide the most lost of souls.

He has waited for 5,000 years for you.

The task is difficult,

Make him human again”

My vision was flooded with vague images of a brutal battle and the sound of terrifying laughter.

That’s when I woke up, screaming. It was already starting to get light outside and I could hear people moving around camp getting breakfast ready.

“Hey are you okay?!” Melody asked as she popped her head into my tent.

“Yeah… I…” I trailed off trying to find the words to describe what I had just experienced. “I just had a nightmare, I guess…”

“Well, as long as you're okay.” She shrugged and she retreated from the tent.

What. Just. Happened.
