Danielle was away on a beach with her family.
Cassey was visiting her grandparents in the city.
I decided to take Draco - the father cat, biking. I planned to take Marsha, but she was moving too much in the bike basket. Draco on the other hand was staying still, so I took him instead. Before we went out, I decided to wear the denim bucket hat I bought from the thrift store - it was a great find.
We went around town, but I avoided the busy streets, I didn’t want to spook Draco. The school was empty except for some cars, maybe some of the teachers were retrieving some forms or something. We stopped beside the river for a bit and I let it flow on my feet. The sound and the feel of the cold running water felt nice. But Draco didn’t feel the same. I spotted some couples, I could feel they were couples. We spent the rest of the afternoon in the plaza.
We sat down on the grass, under a tree. It's a big tree, it would take two I’s to hug it. Its diameter is about the same as my height. I laid beside it, and it felt like it. The birds were nowhere to be found. I wondered where they go to before five. Rays of sun filter through the leaves. It passed through just right that you can actually see the rays. Golder rays, it was beautiful. I wondered when I last did it, laying on grass. As far as I could remember - elementary days. When we would not be having classes, we would lay in the field. It was a big field, surrounded by tall trees that look like Christmas trees but not really. Mostly we would lay down in the center, at around four after the bell rang and the sun is not burning. The sky would go through shades of orange and we would observe the sky for minutes or hours, but we lost track of whatever was not the sky.
Sun is out, the day is beautiful, but the day was also hot. A breeze could not be felt, and I sweat through my shirt.
I don't know if this would apply to all Filipinos or other cultures, but you could call the wind. Just whistle and it will come. My mother would tell me to whistle when we are out in the garden and the day is still, then magically a breeze would come. She doesn't know how to whistle but my father does. His whistle was particular, it would be a tone that I know now by heart. And again the wind comes. Coincidence, maybe, but I believe it to be true.
So I did whistle, called the wind forth to cool me down. Like I knew, it came. Leaves rattled from a distance and I could hear it coming closer and closer until I felt it on my skin. It played with my hair, ruffled Draco’s fur, and blew the hat off my head.
I went to fetch it, then I saw a tall guy pick it up. Making him pick it up was embarrassing for me so I rushed.
“Thank you,” I shot him a smile, he about four inches taller than me.
“Ya, no problem,” he smiled too, and the breeze must've stopped cause I felt hot.
“Cat.”
“Huh”
He pointed at Draco
“Oh, yah, you want to pet him?”
“Yes thank you of course.” Then he smiled again. The wind blew.
