I stayed in the medical tent for a few more days before the doctor let me leave. Melody came to visit me every night to let me know how the day had gone. I haven’t had any strange dreams, either.
The site was about a quarter of the way unearthed, when I was at one of the larger buildings I froze. This is the place I saw, even though it was a small portion of the city, I knew in my heart this was the place I saw in my dreams.
I don’t know how long I was frozen there, before Melody noticed and came over to snap me out of the trance i was in.
“Hey Sparrow, what’s up?” She asked, looking concerned.
“This is the place… The place I saw in my dreams…” I started to shake.
“Hey, Sparrow, sit down. Just breathe okay…” She led me to a spot to sit down. As more of the city is uncovered the worse I feel. “So this is for sure the place you saw in your dreams?”
“Yes, the houses haven’t changed in 5,000 years… since the city fell. The layout of the city is the same, even where we are finding the skeletons… Everything is exactly the same…” She hugged me quickly.
“Hey, it will end up okay in the end, don’t ever forget that I’m here for you. You are my best friend after all!” She patted my back, reassuringly. “Let’s get back to work, shall we?”
“Yeah, let’s.” I stood up and we went to help everyone else with the excavation.
The days dragged on after that, but I felt like I was in a daze just going through the motions. We found many more buildings and skeletons, they almost seemed to be piling up at this point and they all had deep cuts on their bones, consistent with the battle I saw in my dreams.
About two weeks later we had a majority of the city uncovered, almost everything but the city center. The closer we got to the center the more bodies we found in piles, some carrying weapons and wearing armor. Again exactly like the dream. Soon we should stop finding skeletons until we find him…
After the day was done we were again talking around the fire when Jun looked up and said to me.
“Hey, have you been okay? You’re usually so happy at sites.”
“Yeah, I just haven’t been sleeping well, don't worry about it.” I smiled halfheartedly.
“Okay, Mel and I will finish up the rest of the paperwork, why don’t you just get some sleep?” Said Jun.
“Yeah okay I’ll do that.” We all finished eating soon after and they shooed me off to my tent to try and get some sleep. I laid down and surprisingly fell asleep easily. This night wasn’t another peaceful dreamless night though.
My eyes opened in my dream and I saw the city before the tragedies occurred. I was walking through the city, I was not in control of my body, but I was walking towards the city center.
As I approached I saw a figure standing in the center. I could feel my heart pounding in my chest and heard it ringing in my ears. The figure got clearer as I got closer. It was the same man I saw in my previous dream, his aura was different though… It was gentaler almost.
When I was about 15 feet away, he looked up at me and we locked eyes. When he looks so gentle like this it’s hard to think about what he ends up doing… I continued to walk closer. I ended up on a bench that was opposite to him. I looked around and noticed there was no one around, it was as if it was just him and I in this peaceful world.
“Who are you?” He asked. I looked at the ground in front of my shoes.
“My name is Sparrow, and who are you?” I looked back up at him and our eyes locked again. His eyes were somber, as if he was depressed. He walked closer to me and sat next to me on the bench.
“I am the Pharaoh Amun, why are you here?” He asked as if he was confused.
“I don’t know, I fell asleep and I woke up here…” I looked at my feet again, losing my confidence. He started to chuckle softly, then I remembered vividly what I had seen, and started to tremble violently. He noticed and stopped abruptly, looking somewhat concerned.
“You know don’t you… “ He hid his face away in his hands and appeared to cry. “That must be why you’re scared…” I almost reached out but I stopped myself.
“I saw everything that happened to this city, and I have all the evidence to prove it.” I said as calmly as I could.
“But you don’t seem scared.” He looked up at me, with a sinister look in his eyes. The sky grew dark. Is this really the same man I saw only moments ago?
“I am… but this is only a dream…” I sputtered out.
“Are you sure this is just another dream?” All the pristine buildings started to crumble and turn into sand.
“W-What do you mean?” I said giving away the amount of fear that I had for this man. He started to laugh louder, sounding more like the laugh that has been haunting my nightmares. He grabbed my chin aggressively, to make me look him in the eyes.
“This isn’t a dream, Master…” He said while laughing. And everything started to fade away into blackness, as if it had never happened.
Someone was violently shaking me as if they were trying to wake me, and I opened my eyes. As I looked around I realized that I wasn’t in my tent anymore.
“SPARROW!” You finally woke up!” Melody exclaimed while hugging me.
“What happened? Where am I?” I said while looking around taking in my surroundings. “ Oh… I’m in the city center aren’t I?” I asked knowingly.
“Yeah, you are Row, the exact center. No one knows how you got here, they just found you like this when everyone started working for the day, and then they called me over.” She said in a quiet tone, as if she knew what I was going to ask her. She and Jun helped me to my feet and walked with me back to camp.
Once we got there Jun asked the question that everyone was asking.
“Sparrow, how did you end up there?”
“I don’t remember ever leaving my tent. I dreamt that I walked there though…” Is this really what my life has become… I heard the locals whispering about their own hypotheses as to what's happening to me . He’s crazy, he can’t handle the heat, he’s cursed…
Maybe I am cursed…
