scene 003 - mission time
The very next day, Afyuli walked into that same store once more. Wearing the glasses, as the harpy had asked, was difficult— more difficult than imagined. Simple things such as ordering lunch became a terrifying endeavor. Every turn of the way, Afyuli met a new creature. Some were giant bugs, others were flying cats.
“Afyuli Aßie.” The old woman whispered their name, breaking their chain of thought. “You came back!”
“Was I not supposed to?”
“Oh, my child. You did the right thing by coming back. It is not common for people to come back after learning such things.” She ushered them back to the same seats they were the previous day. “What reason do you have for coming back?”
“I have questions.”
“I’m sure you do. Everyone does. But questions don't make one believe. Answers do.” She reached for a page from a book stored under the counter.
“I’m just— I’m not sure how those glasses could play tricks the same way virtual reality headgear could.”
“It is good to question everything, but I’m glad that didn’t stop you from showing up.” She pushed the book closer to Afyuli. “Here. Read this with me. Afyuli fiä kaiöiw aßie eyät eye. To see all and nothing at once.”
“But what does it mean, ma’am?” They leaned in closer.
“According to this book, it is a prophecy from the Enäjaiafeþ. It is so old there isn’t much written about it, but I can tell you that you have been chosen, my child.” She gazed into their eyes with awe and pride in her eyes.
“Chosen? By who? And for what? What am I to do?”
“You were chosen by the Gods. It is unclear to me what you are needed for. All I know was you are here with a purpose.”
“Then, what should I do?”
“Find your people. Find the Enäjaiafeþ. They will know their prophecies better than you or I.”
“Then, that is what I shall do... I realize I don’t know your name.”
“You can call me Miss Nyphinis.” She smiled and feigned a bow.
“Well, it is nice to meet you, Miss Nyphinis.”
“It is kind to meet you as well, Afyuli Aßie. But I must warn you. In the place of the Enäjaiafeþ, people are different. They aren’t like you. You must be careful.”
