Chapter four
Jacob knocked on Penelope's door unsurely, he hadn’t ever been in the attic, it was rather dark and dreary. With creaking wooden panels and cobwebs decorating the walls. It felt as if he were in a silent movie and the monster was about to come out to kill him.
Someone answered the door peeking out through a gap,
“Y-yes?” they asked nervously.
“It’s just me Jacob , I'm going to be heading out now, and I did say I would give Avegline a lift.”
Penelope opened the door, she hugged Avegline goodbye, “see ya at school tomorrow,”
“Yeah see you tomorrow,” Avegline waved her hands then backed out the room, the door closing behind her. She didn’t speak as they headed down the stairs or as they put their shoes on, dismaying Jacob .
“Poor Jacob having to drive flightless bird about,” one of the twins chuckled,
“Thank god one of them has magic if they get in an accident.”
Jacob frowned, he turned to Avegline, “here,” he said handing her his keys to his BMW, “wait in the car for me, i need to quickly do something.” she probably felt deadly energy pulsing around him, and nodded, travelling out to his car.
Jacob sauntered towards the giggling twins, “you want to say that again?”
“What that she’s a flightless-” the talking twin stopped short as Jacob threw a small fireball back his ear, searing off a few inches of the boy's hair.
“The fuck man!” the other shouted, “you could have burnt his ear off,”
“Next time I will if I ever hear you saying shit like that about my soulmate.” he advanced closer to them pinning the twins till their faces were to the wall.
“Soul-soulmate?” one of them trembled,
“Yeah, got a problem with that,” the fireballs in his hands grew hotter and bigger,
“No,” both shook their heads.
“Good, cause I don't think it would suit you to have your skin charred off. I have a feeling not many girls would want to get into bed with you two anymore. I mean your best quality is your looks, without that-” he paused, grinning at the two boys, “-your nothing.”
He left the two quaking by the stairs, probably pissing themselves in fear. Let's be honest they had it coming.
Climbing into his car, Avegline handed him his keys, and started the ignition and began to drive. It was silent besides Avegline giving Jacob directions. He felt like a giddy school girl, being paired up with his crush. She was so close yet, she acted as if they were strangers, they were, but their souls weren’t and it yearned to find its place with Aveglines.
“Sorry,” she burst out randomly,
“What?”
“Sorry, that you’re stuck with me. I know I'm not anyone's choice.”
Jacob frowned, his grip tightening on the steering wheel, without warning, he pulled over to the side of the road and put the car on stall.
“Stuck with you. You make it sound as if it’s some type of punishment, when it’s really a gift.”
Avegline sighed, “you don’t know then?” she spoke it as if it were a fact. “Look, i won’t hold it against you if you want to pretend we don’t know each other after this,”
“I’m not going to-”
“Just listen,” she said, and he did. “I’m a fairy,”
He gave her a confused look, his head peering behind her. Fairies were proud of their wings, and never hid them, each was unique and different, it was a fairies pride. It was unheard of for a fairy not to have wings, at least that was Jacob assumed Avegline was going.
“My wings are useless, I'm a flightless fairy, go figure right,” she chuckled, but it sounded broken and sorrowful, “I can't fly because I can't do magic. Never have, never will,”
“How is that possible?”
Avegline shrugged, “i guess i’m that rare expectation to the rule. Anyway I know you think I'm a freak now. And I understand, so just drop me off and I'll never say a word to you again.”
“Do you honestly think I give a shit?” he questioned angrily.
Avegline stared shocked, “did you not hear-”
“I heard, and I don't care. You’re my soulmate, I'd be a right idiot to reject you for something silly like that.” he reached for her hand, intertwining his fingers with hers.
Instantly a connection was forged between them, it sparked with life through their bodies, a link joined their minds, and completeness filled them both. Jacob fell deep into her mind, it was flashing everything, he suddenly knew everything from her loving poptarts when she was two, to knowing what she had for breakfast that morning. But all too soon, far sooner than Jacob liked she was pulled out, it felt as if she was being torn away from home.
They both gazed at one another amazed, “did that just happen?” she asked,
“How much did you see?”
“Everything,” she breathed,
“Me too.” she held onto one anothers hand, Avegline leaned her head on Jacob 's shoulder, “you don’t want to forget me?” she asked to be sure again,
“Never,” he said fiercely. Instead was filled with rage at everyone and everything that ever caused her pain, he was sure he would punish them for it, but he needed to wait, plan, he couldn’t rush.
“Let get you back home, your mum will worry,”
Avegline smiled, “okay.” Jacob didn’t let go of her hand for the rest of the drive, not wanting to lose her warmth.
After dropping her off, he headed home, it wasn’t a surprise that his dad was still up, he looked like Jacob with platinum blouse hair, except his dad wore glasses and didn’t have Jacob green eyes, but instead a golden amber.
“Have fun at Vlads?”
“More than fun, I met my soulmate,” he grinned cockily.
His dad dropped what he was doing, which was carrying heaps of potion equipment.
“Well done my boy,” he lifted Jacob into a hug, “who are they? What are they like?”
“Her name is Avegline Maren. She’s smart, hardworking, and kind. I could go on.”
“Well,” he said, slapping his son's back, “happy for you. You’ll bring her to dinner soon, won’t you?”
“Yes, but don’t embarrass me,”
His dad scoffed, “I'd never, what could I possibly do?”
“Dad, you're walking around in your boxers.”
“There nice boxers,”
“They’ve got teddy bears on them.”
“Well what else am I meant to wear?”
“Trousers for a start, maybe a shirt,”
“You're being ridiculous,” he turned his nose up at his son, “I don't see anything wrong with this.”
“So being arrested for public indecency because you went to shops in just boxers, socks and a colds wizard hat wasn’t enough to convince you.”
“We were out of vodka,”
Jacob sighed, “that’s not an emergency.”
“I had a hangover,”
“And vodka was supposed to help with that is it?”
“It normally does, yes.” he frowned his head, “go to bed, i don’t need your judgement.”
Jacob rolled his eyes, “night day,”
“Don’t let bed bugs bite. No really I put a spell on them, a bite possibly might turn you into a rabbit.”
Jacob spent the night on the sofa, one eye open watching for bed bugs.
🪄🪄🪄
In the morning Jacob waited outside Aveglines flat building, till she finally walked out, she moved over to his car, frowning in confusion.
“What are you doing here?”
“I’m picking you of course,” he smiled,
Avegline bit her lips shyly, “you didn’t have too.”
“And have you walked? Baby you're going to be getting around in style now.” he wriggled his brows at her, which she snorted in laughter at. She opened the passenger door, sliding in.
“My mum nearly called the police when she noticed your car, and how you were watching the building. She thought someone had a stalker.”
“I probably should have gotten your number last to text you a warning.”
“It’s okay, got me an excuse to leave, mum was going on about how she was never lucky enough to get a stalker.”
Jacob knew not to comment on that and instead began to drive.
“Why are we heading into wolf town?”
“Gotta pick up Vlad.”
“What? The future alpha doesn't have a car.”
“Why drive, when you can get someone else too,”
The laughter in Jacob s faded away when he saw how quiet Avegline was being.
“We can pick Penelope up too if you want,” he hoped that would make her feel better, luckily it did, her lits up,
“Really?”
Jacob nodded, “they live in the same house, it’s not difficult.”
Avegline dashed to get her phone out of her pocket letting her friend know the news.
When they got to the alpha’s house Vlad and Penelope were standing by the steps waiting. They got in wordlessly, Vlad glared at his friend, not happy his seat was taken by Avegline, “are we picking up strays now too?” Vlad grumbled,
“Not unless you want to go to the pound,”
“Why are you so bloody early?”
“I was picking Avegline,”
“Eve,” she quickly piped in, “call me Eve.”
“Why?” Vlad questioned in a harden voice,
“I already told you, she’s the one.”
Vlad looked at his friend as if he were crazy, and with his dad being the way he was, he wouldn’t be surprised if it were true.
“We’re soulmates, really.”
Vlad focused on his friend with doubt, Jacob grunted, lifting the wrist sleeve of his top, showing the mark, as Eve did the same, they were identical, and instead of being black as it was before it shone with a luminescent red.
“what the fuck!” Vlad shouted, “why didn’t you tell me.”
“I did,” Jacob grumbled.
“I thought that was a joke,”
Jacob glared at his friend in the rearview mirror, and bergan to drive away. It was practically empty.
“School isn't even open,” Vlad complained as they parked. It was then that a frantic knock sounded at the front passenger window. It was the weird girl who was too happy about everything, and as hyper as a child who raided a sweetshop, except she never does have a sugar crush saving them all from her insanity, no she just keeps on going till you’re begging her to stop being so annoying.
Jacob tried not to seem unhappy about the girl's presence considering she was one of Evs best friends and that short time in Eve's mind told him how much her friends meant to her.
Vlad in the back had gone quiet, no more rumbling and whining about being at school too early. He was just staring at the pink haired girl.
“Eve! Penny!” she shouted. Eve rolled down her window,
“Hey Lola,”
“Guess what!” she squealed, “I found my soulmate.”
“Who?” Penny questioned,
Lola broke out into a grin, “he’s next to you silly,”
Penny went pale as did Eve, “my-my,” Penny was trying to get the words out, “my brother?” she looked as if she was going to lose consciousness.
“Best day ever!” Lola screamed, jumping up and down like an excited puppy.
Jacob turn to smirk at Vlad who looked ready to murder someone, and since the goddess was unavailable it might just be the dancing girl in the parking lot.
