CHAPTER THREE
Peter’ head was pounding when he was finally starting to open his eyes.
“I guess I can say for sure that these guys don’t play around.” Peter stated.
“That is a certainty, these guys are G men.” Sparky stated.
No sooner did he get the words out when three of them walked in.
“Oh good, are guests are awake, I have a few questions for you and your partner, Mr. James.” One of the said.
“If this is the way you treat guest, I hate to see what you do for those you don’t like.” Peter stated.
The man that had been speaking to Peter, laughed.
“Well, Mr. James, if you had listened to the Lieutenant and dropped your investigation, we would not be having this conversation right now.
“Well Mr., um, I didn’t catch your name,’
“And you won’t be. In fact, the only thing you are going to catch is a break.” The man told him.
“How about that Sparky, we have been abducted, drugged and pitched in a hole, so now we get to catch a break.” Peter fired off in a sarcastic tone.
The man speaking now slammed his fist on the table that was in the room.
“Let me spell it out for you Mr. James, I have the power to put you in a hole that no one would ever know what happened to you. I have done it before and have no problem doing it again. The only reason I don’t is because I am aware of the good that you have done for the city of Chicago. However, I have a job to do, and if you insist on interfering with that job, The good I do, far outweighs the good you do.”
“Is that so? I have a client right now that would vehemently disagree with you. I also believe that there is a 15-year boy that would also disagree. What allows you to play God? Peter asked in an angry tone.
The man reached for his wallet, then smiled and shook his finger at Peter.
“You are good, but the less you know the better it is for everyone involved.”
There now was a knock on the door, and the man in charge left the room with the other two. Sparky rushed over to the door to listen. He related what he was hearing to Peter.
“It appears that three enemy agents entered the train that was carrying someone the U.S. agents had been working with and grabbed the man and carried him off the train.”
Peter and Sparky backed away from the door as the agents came back in.
“We have a situation we need to care for, we will be back to discuss what to do with you two later.” The man said and turned to leave.
“Look, you have your secrets and so do we, We know who you are, Agent Wilson. and we can help.” Peter said.
“I don’t have any idea what…”
“Look, no one knows this city like Sparky and I, not even the police. You have your special equipment, but ours has been fine tuned to our town. I am not interested in Federal Government business, I just want to get Bobby back to his sister, and if that means helping you finish your business in my town, so be it.” Peter said.
“No!” Agent Wilson said and again started to leave,
“If you don’t recover your mark, it could mean that those enemy agents might will trace down everyone that knew anything about what was going on.”
Peter paused, and then said in a serious tone,
“That would include Bobby.”
Agent Wilson stopped and slowly turned back around.
“Alright Mr. James, but let it be known to you that these you will be facing are no petty thugs, they are trained killers.” Agent Wilson stated.
“Understood” Peter replied.
“Good, we are wasting time.”
It did not take long for the action to begin. All the agents divided up into groups of two. The two agents that took Peter and Sparky back to their car at the train station came under machine gun fire as soon as they pulled got back to the street.
“Sparky!”
“I am working on it!” Sparky fired back.
He rapidly flipped a bunch a switches, as Peter simultaneously hit the gas to get out of the gun fight, as well as sent out a "guns fired alert" to all police cars in the area. The foreign agents started to flee when they heard the police sirens, but they had made Swiss cheese of the government agents car, and unfortunately also the agents.
“What are you doing, those killing machines headed off the other way!” Sparky yelled.
“We are not equipped to handle that kind of fire power, we have to get to Pop’s shop and boost our abilities to defend and weaponize are ourselves.” Peter explained.
“But Boss, we don’t have time for pops to design, much less design and build what we need.” Sparky stated.
“That is why we are going to call in the reinforcements.” Peter said as he made a call to Becky, Lieutenant Brown, and Agent Wilson, in that order.
When they arrived at the shop, Pop let them in his special impregnatable garage door.
Becky, Margaret, Lieutenant Brown, were already there.
It did not take the Lieutenant long to jump all over Peter for pulling him away from a daylight shooting at the train station.
“Your boys are just going to keep running in to dead ends Lieutenant. I need your men to set up a perimeter to stop all flow of traffic headed west out of town, Wilsons men will cover the train stations and the airports.” Peter ordered.
“Who died and left you in charge?” The Lieutenant said forcefully.
“You want to make governor one day? Helping the Secret Service to Capture enemy agents, will certainly look nice on that resume, Now we have about fifteen minutes to get everyone in place.” Peter concluded.
The Lieutenant gave Peter one of his dirtiest looks to date, then turned and left in a huff.
“Now Pops, we need those pieces you have been working on for my car installed in about five minutes,”
“James, my boy, the day you want something under five minutes is the day I die.” Pops stated.
Six minutes later, Sparky contacted Agent Wilson and said they were all set to go.
“According to our instruments, they are held up in the Boyd building.” Agent Wilson told them.
“Okay there is a back way from there to the 33rd street train station, however that is right next to a large police station, so I doubt they would take that route.” Sparky stated.
“I agree, as a matter of fact I would not doubt that they plan an escape at all.” Agent Wilson grumbled.
“We need them alive, and that is what we do best. In our line of work dead people don’t talk or pay. Don’t worry, we got this,” Peter said in his usual confident flair.”
“Look James, I lost three top agents already to these killers, and I certainly do not want to have to explain to the president why I involved a local hustler, especially if you end up on the casualty list also.”
“Well Agent Wilson, I will do my best to save you that embarrassment.” Peter said as he and Sparky rolled the car out of Pop’s garage.
“I hate having new equipment without having tested it first, “Sparky grumbled.
“Pops knows his stuff,” Peter said confidently.
Sparky gave him an astonished look.
“Okay, there have been a few miscues in the past…”
“A few? It only takes one for us to be “Bye, Bye Birdy.” Sparky said in a huff,
“Okay enough of this, possible escape routes from the Boyd building? Peter asked.
Sparky ran down the three most logical.
“Okay as Agent Wilson stated these are not the type we deal with, they have a much higher budget, If you had an unlimited budget how would you make your getaway? Peter asked.
Sparky thought about this for a moment.
“Given the height of the Boyd building, I would wait till I had the cover of darkness and make use of a sail glider.” Sparky stated.
“Too risky, sail gliders are hard enough to navigate during the day, at night it would be impossible. There has to be something else special about the Boyd building,” Peter stated.
Sparky dug up everything he could find on the building. Nothing stood out until he mention that it once housed a speakeasy during prohibition.
“That is, it! Quick access anything that could resemble escape tunnels.”
Sparky pulled out several maps.
Peter contacted Becky and told her to proceed with her scheduled “sound effects.” He next contacted the Lieutenant, and Agent Wilson with what they had discovered and what they need to do.
“Boss, why are you so sure they will use that tunnel?”
“Our maps shows those other three tunnels as open, however, they only lead to rooms to hide in. Now we should be in range, can you get a fix on our spies?” Peter asked.
“They are still located on the top floor, wait a minute, they are on the move…down.”
“Agent Wilson. Did you copy that?”
“Yes, we are setting a trap for where they should exit that tunnel onto the street.”
“Becky, you need to circle the block surrounding that building, projecting just the sounds related to police activity.” Peter instructed.
“What do you hope to accomplish?” Becky asked.
“Exactly what you were sent there for, confusion. Stay driving around the block for thirty minutes. This might cause them to change there plans. At the very least it will buy Agent Wilson more time to set his trap.”
“What are we going to do” Sparky asked, knowing full well Peter had something up his sleeve.
Peter just looked at Sparky and smiled. Sparky rolled his eyes.
“Whatever it is, I am sure that I am not going to like it.” Sparky stated as he looked over the controls on the new equipment that Pops had installed.
