“Wow, all of these objects on display are super cool.”
“Yeah. You’d be surprised what weird things come from space sometimes, Riley.”
“That’s true, but I’m willing to bet they’re probably not as weird as you.” The female wolf would nudge at Adam’s arm.
He’d chuckle.
“Hey, I take pride in being weird.”
The New Upferd Space Center was the most prominent research facility in the Caribbean. Adam’s parents worked there for many years. They had many studies that would be based around the island’s weather patterns in the atmosphere, and objects that came from the outer reaches of space.
“My parents should be here somewhere, they’re usually busy and pacey.”
She looked towards him.
“I mean, hey, we’ve got all day, don’t we?”
Adam rubbed behind his head.
“Well, yeah. True. Didn’t you want to hit up the beach resort later on?”
Riley’s tail wagged a little bit. The beach resort was one of the top hang out spots on the island. She mostly loved going for the very sake of interacting with the tourists.
“I did!”
“Ah, there you two are. Your dad’s been looking for you.”
The words came from a robotic figure approaching the two wolves.
Adam waved at the figure.
“Oh! Hello Aurora.”
“Hiya! Welcome back, Adam!”
She’d gaze at Riley, shifting her head up and down curiously.
“I don’t believe we’ve met before. You’re a new face.”
“Oh, yeah. Aurora, this is my girlfriend Riley. Riley, this is my parents’ lab assistant, Aurora. She’s a protogen.”
The wolf shook the protogen’s hand.
“It’s nice to meet you.”
A smile would appear on her visor; out of instinct, Aurora wrapped her big paws around Riley, gently but happily squeezing her in a hug.
“Likewise!”
“Oh yeah.. I forgot to mention she’s very huggable.”
“I think I see that..haha.”
Riley hugged her back.
“Oh goodness...she’s warm. Like...SUPER warm, and soft too, might I add.”
“I’m glad you think so! I try my best to be a warm, comforting companion!”
Aurora would say as she continued to hug the wolf for a bit longer.
“Now what did I come to you two for again…?”
Adam gently nudged the protogen as she let go of Riley. Despite being smart, he knew she was also a little forgetful.
“Something about my parents looking for us?”
“...Oh! That’s right! Follow me!”
She led them up to the top floor of the research center, where the Observatory was. It was her favorite place in the entire building to rest and chill out when she wasn’t needed for a task.
“There you guys are. Thank you Aurora.”
Would say a figure as he stepped out from behind another door.
“No problem, Pops.”
Adam looked forward, only to see his dad standing near the observatory’s giant telescope. He walked forward to hug him.
“Heya, Dad.”
“Hey kiddo. I’m glad you made it up here safely.”
He briefly glanced at the other wolf in the room.
“And it’s great to see you too, Riley. How’s your transition going?”
She gently rubbed at her arm, not having expected him to ask.
“O-Oh, uh…it’s going pretty good! Working at becoming comfortable with myself everyday.”
“I’m glad, because that’s what matters most. Don’t let anyone make you feel awful for just wanting to be yourself.”
Riley nodded confidently.
“Yes sir.”
“So what made you call us up here?”
“Oh, right! Uh..”
Mr. Sanchez pulled out his laptop from his bag, opening it up to a sun that filled the screen.
“You know this island’s got some weird phenomenon going on all the time, right?”
Adam and Riley both nodded.
“Well, we’re detecting something rare to happen with the sunset tonight. In Caribbean Legend, we call it the ‘Green Flash’. It happens when the sun is almost entirely below the horizon, with the barest edge of the sun still visible.”
He’d point towards the outer rim of the sun on the screen.
“For a second or two, that upper rim of the sun will appear green in color. I wanted to let you know that in most cases, it can cause a transformation for certain people, especially young people like you two.”
“What do you mean by transformation?”
“As far as I know, this only affects canines. As for Hyenas, who share similarities, are unknown as of right now, but I feel like it could likely have some effect. You’d transform into werewolves for the night, and transform back at sunrise.”
Riley pondered, taking in the entire explanation.
“Doesn’t really seem that bad. We’d have control of ourselves during this, right?”
“Indeed. There hasn’t been any information that says those affected will lose control of themselves during the transformation process. I know this from experience because this has happened to me, as well as my wife too. Just..you two be careful anyway though, I can’t exactly promise you two will experience the same effects as we once did.”
This comic series is, in a nutshell, going to be based on my own childhood experiences from growing up in the Caribbean with my family.
Caribbean Escapades primarily focuses on Brian and his close friend Usui. Joined by their friends, Sammy, Jinx, and Tyler, as well as their classmates, they leave their home island of St. Monusea and venture across the Caribbean for the summer; they experience new things and new people to befriend, and on occasion, old and familiar faces as well. And who knows? Maybe they'll discover new things about themselves, too!
