Caribbean Escapades: Vol. 1

Camera Magic

Camera Magic

Feb 07, 2022

Tommy was out on his normal evening stroll in the park. Something he definitely looked forward to while living in the city was that, since it was so close to the sea, it was primarily cooler weather in the evening. However, he was fiddling with his camera, trying to do a task for his mother and not really paying attention to his surroundings. He figured that since he was in such an open space, he most likely wouldn't run into anything, or anyone, for that matter.

"Ugh...this camera's always got all sorts of problems.."

Unknowingly, to him, someone nearby in the park had heard him fiddling with said camera. The figure would give the cat a quick glance.

"Hey, everything going ok over there?"

"Yeah, it's just sometimes the camera settings get all funk-"

He'd stop mid-sentence as he ran into the figure, not having realized how close in proximity he was. He seemed to resemble a sort of mix between a fox and a wolf; primarily brown, but had a bit of light tan in his fur, while his hair and beard were at a much darker shade. His eyes glowed a light blue as the streetlights would reflect off of them.

“Tommy?”
The figure would ask, helping the cat up off the ground.

He’d rub his head a little, giving him a glance right in the eyes, before looking away a bit embarrassed.
“C-Curly! I…haven’t seen you since we graduated. Sorry I just like, ran into you like that..Talk about a weird way to meet up..haha..”

“It’s all good, bud. So uh, what's going on with your camera?"

Tommy looked down at the camera he had in his hand.
"I mean, not a lot. It's just an old camera my mom gave me."

He'd hold it up to the folf's face and focus the lenses on him.
"Don’t get me wrong, like, it works. But..barely. Doesn’t function as well as it’s meant to."

He’d tilt his head and gazed at it, himself.
"Hmm, can I take a look at it? It looks kinda familiar."

Tommy handed over the camera to him, and watched as he tinkered with it. He seemed to have a lot of familiarity, almost as if he’s dealt with this sort of tech before.
“Wow…he’s really good at this.”

"Ohhhh I think I know how to fix it!"

He continued to fiddle with it some more; the camera resets, and he handed it right back to the confused feline.
"Just give it about a minute or two and it'll work like new again!"

He'd stare down at the camera for a minute as he had it back in his hands., before looking up at him like he had just committed a crime or something.

"Are you some kinda wizard?"

The fox-wolf hybrid started to laugh.
"Heheh..I wish. Ever since we graduated, I started taking up an interest in mechanics, so I know my way around quite a number of machines. Go ahead, try your new settings out!”

Tommy held the lenses upwards towards his face, snapping a picture to see if it really worked. And it seems it did, as the picture came out much clearer than any of the other photos he took beforehand.
"Huh..would ya look at that. It works much better now. You look cute!"

Curly looked over to see the picture.
"See, all it needed was a system reboot, but the way you gotta do it on that certain camera is really wei-”

“Wait, did you just call me cute?”

Tommy looked up at him, shaking his head in a panic.
"I- What- No- ANYWAY what did you mean by really weird?”

"Well I mean, in order to access the menu to reboot the camera you gotta put it in safe mode, which half the time doesn't work. But when it does, it does.”

He’d give the cat a glare.
“Also don’t lie, you totally did say I was cute.”

Tommy would glare back.
“Well who’s to say whether I was telling the truth or not-”

Curly gave him a mischievous grin.
“Me, because I heard it with my own ears. Besides, one thing I know about you is that you’re a horrible liar.”

“I…”
Tommy looked away again with a blush and his ears folded back.
“A-Alright yeah, you’ve got me there…”

The folf would laugh in a slightly victorious manner, giving him a gentle punch on the arm.
“It’s nice to see you haven’t changed. Buuuut, if it helps you any, I think you’re pretty darn cute too…heheh.”

Tommy gently rubbed his arm.
“Takes one to know one, I suppose..”

Curly smiled.
“Aye, that is true, yes. Oh, here, let me give you my new phone number so we can stay in contact! Maybe we’ll get coffee together, too.”

“Oh, uh, yes of course. I’d be okay with that.”

“Perfect.”

This comic series is, in a nutshell, going to be based on my own childhood experiences from growing up in the Caribbean with my family.

Caribbean Escapades primarily focuses on Brian and his close friend Usui. Joined by their friends, Sammy, Jinx, and Tyler, as well as their classmates, they leave their home island of St. Monusea and venture across the Caribbean for the summer; they experience new things and new people to befriend, and on occasion, old and familiar faces as well. And who knows? Maybe they'll discover new things about themselves, too!
