The library is a special place, most of my time is spent here. I appreciate family time with mom and the girls, but I also value the solitude in this huge room; just me and hundreds of books waiting for me.
It has been weeks since Amos' visit, which lasted ten minutes at most. It was good for Mom to talk to people other than her maids, no doubt she enjoyed the visit. Could it be that she and Amos...? I won't give it too much thought.
Back in the library, I look for a chair with my eyes while he took the book I read last time, when Amos came, the book was: ´Fire in its pure state. Advanced control of the elements. Volume I´. It is not a long book, I finished it in a couple of days, although I was very intrigued by what I read, so I read it again to review more in depth its content.
"Every Dragonnewt has the ability to utilize the greatest virtue of its ancient predecessors: divine fire. The element that characterizes the greatness and virtue of its bearers."
This last part seems more the author's opinion than a reality, it must be that it was written by a dragonnewt who loves his race very much, or by a being who admires us too much. Apparently every dragonnewt can use the divine fire element, divine must be an adjective to exalt the fire element, nothing more. After reading this I tried to manifest fire, but nothing happened. The second reading was to look for a clue to my question: why can't I manifest fire?
I thought several times to ask mom, or Saraa and Ruddith, but first I want to try without help and exhaust all my options, when that has failed I will turn to them. Asking for help still continues to cost me, even 'before' it was like that.
Going through the contents of the book a bit more, I found several ways to use fire and increase its power, but at the moment it does me no good since I can't make fire in the first place. This book takes for granted from the beginning that the reader can make fire, there is no hint about the opposite point of view.
I read for two hours to see if I left anything out, either a word or a sentence that makes a minimum of sense in what I am looking for, but I found nothing. I'm at an impasse, maybe I should look at it from another point of view. I have only thought of making fire out of nothing, but not in knowing how the process of creation is, nothing comes out of the void. Of course, in this book it doesn't say anything about it, but in other books I read before there was something about it, the book is called: 'How primary elemental magic works: wind', maybe it will help.
I know about the existence of the six elements: fire, water, earth, wind, shadow and light. But there is not much information here, there is only one book dedicated to fire and two dedicated to wind, this is one of them. When I finished reading it, I discovered that only humans and elves can use this type of magic, I don't specify the reason. Returning to the above, and leaving this mystery behind, the mechanism of creating wind magic is very simple, at first glance, and there are only three steps: channel your inner mana in one or more extremities of your body, verbally manifest the spell you will invoke and then expel the channeled mana in your extremities, the mana will come out in the form of the spell you manifested. This is the simple way to do magic, clearly, the deeper you go the more complex it is, but for now this is the basics of doing magic. Let's try it, but instead of wind I'll do it with fire, I hope it works.
After spending some time thinking about it, I went to the courtyard to practice as a precaution against setting the library on fire in case something went wrong.
As I was heading towards the front door on my way to the courtyard, Saraa sees me:
"Ray, where are you headed?"
"I'm going to the playground to play a little, I'm bored with reading," I said quietly. "And don't worry, I've finished all my language homework. I already learned how to conjugate verbs in areona."
"I hope you're not lying to me," Saraa replied in a threatening tone, but with a smirk. "Have fun, and don't do anything crazy."
I smile at Saraa and head for the front door. A short walk and I find my destination. Everything is ready, let the show begin.
"If I remember correctly, the first step is to channel the inner mana into one of my limbs," I whispered as I tried to concentrate.
I search for mana inside me, but find nothing. I try again, and nothing. Again, and nothing. I go on and on, and nothing. It's been fifteen minutes since then, I search for mana inside me and I can't find it.
"First of all, do I have mana inside me...?"
As I utter that question I understand that I was looking at everything from the wrong perspective. I am neither human nor an elf, I am a dragonnewt. Magic can work in very different or very similar ways for each race, but that doesn't mean it should be the same. Probably the mechanism of magic is similar between humans and elves, after all both can use the same element, so the dragonnewt's mechanism of magic may be in a very, or somewhat, different way than theirs. That thought doesn't sound so crazy if I give it some thought. I've tried the way humans and elves do it, so now I'll try the opposite way.
´Channel your inner mana into one or more extremities of your body', that is the first step. If instead of channeling the inner I accumulate the outer. Just by thinking those words my hands and feet start to sweat, my body temperature starts to rise.
"Yes."
A smile spreads across my face as I clench my fist triumphantly.
"So this is the mana. I've solved it, now it's time for the second one," I added before relaxing my hands and feet releasing what little mana I had accumulated.
´Verbally manifest the spell you will invoke', that's the second one. I have no idea whatsoever about magic spells, I don't even know one or how they work. Another crossroads, but for some reason this won't be a problem. In my chest I have a feeling that I can skip this step, as if I don't need to. With that feeling in my mind, I concentrate on the third step.
'Then expel the channeled mana into your limbs and it will come out in the form of the spell you manifested', this is the last step. With a bit of fear and anxiety, I accumulate mana again in my right hand while visualizing a fireball in my mind, I raise my right hand towards the sky with my eyes closed, and after a few seconds I look up; a fireball of about ten meters in diameter is above my head. I scream as I push upwards to get such a thing away from above me. As I do so, the fireball shoots up into the sky shaking all the grass, trees and plants in the yard.
That was my first magic spell, I called it: fireball, that's how original I am. After what happened, Saraa scolded me, she also told mom about it but she pretended to scold me and secretly congratulated me. After the fake scolding, mom said she was going to hire a tutor to teach me how to control and improve the use of my magic. Thanks to this prank I got to know better how magic works, and I got a new tutor.
"If you could change things, would you do it? I would, but in this life you cannot go back to the past, there is no such power. My actions led me to the consequences I am currently living: my death. I regret many decisions I made throughout my short life, but I wonder: what will there be after death? a second chance? I pray that there is."
