After mom interrupted us, we all went to get something to eat together. The day went by extremely fast. Mom was so excited about Asara's visit that she kept her busy for the rest of the time, gave her a tour of the house and they caught up.
It is already dark, everyone is asleep. Asara had an exhausting trip, so the best thing is that she rests and tomorrow we continue', that was the excuse I used for her to rest since she wanted to continue with her work. She is a dedicated person, I like that about her, I have high expectations.
The night breeze feels amazing on the roof of the house. Lying down and feeling the breeze and the silence is definitely one of the pleasures of the night. For fun and curiosity's sake, I'm up here even though I used to have a ´certain fear´ of heights, but for some reason I'm not afraid of them anymore. It feels comfortable to be up here, it's strange.
The night is very bright today, it's just me and a thousand stars, or so I thought.
"How long have you been there?"
"You have a good ear."
From behind me, taking shape under the moonlight and stars, a silhouette approaches. It is the person I least expected.
"From your surprised face, I imagine I'm the person you least expected."
She has read my mind. Slowly I stand up until I am fully seated, while she comes closer and closer.
"Shouldn't you be sleeping, Rudd?" I said as I watched his figure in the moonlight.
It is beautiful, the moon of course.
"I can say the same thing, Ray," Rudd replied. "Especially since I'm an adult and you're a child. These are not times for you to be awake."
"I can't sleep."
"It's strange. You've never had trouble sleeping before, what could it be due to? The new tutor maybe?"
"Why do you mention her?" I said in surprise.
Something is wrong.
"You've met a new person, it's normal to be defensive or have concerns at first," Rudd commented calmly before hugging me from behind. "But there's nothing to be afraid of, Lili trusts her and if she does we all should too."
"I'm not defensive, I like Asara very much. I think someone else is worried about this new change," I said as I touched her hand. "Everything will be fine, if anything happens I will protect you. I promise."
"A child is comforting me, I can't believe it," Rudd replied with a faint smile of relief. "It was always the three of us, even when you came along it was hard at first, but now everything is changing so suddenly it terrifies me. I don't have a reason to doubt Asara or worry about Amos' visits, but I'm afraid the life we lead here will change."
"I get it, change is scary."
Memories that I prefer to forget take force in my mind.
"Change is a natural thing, it happens all the time and we can only adapt to it, but as long as you are with the people you love you can get through any situation that comes your way," I added.
"You're right, I'm surprised you're comforting me and being the adult in this situation."
Rudd hugs me tighter.
"You don't look like a child at all," Rudd added.
"You can show me all your weaknesses, Rudd. I won't judge you, I'll just be by your side so we can face them together."
"Everything will soon change, Lili will probably tell you before long."
"I know, but that doesn't matter now. Let's enjoy the moment and leave the future and its worries in their place," I said looking at the moon.
"Now you can sleep," I added.
"It was you who was having trouble with sleep."
"I lied, I was just enjoying the night and its silence," I said after a small yawn.
"It's getting to be bedtime, shall we?" Rudd asked before extending his hand towards me.
"If you could change things, would you do it? I would, but in this life you cannot go back to the past, there is no such power. My actions led me to the consequences I am currently living: my death. I regret many decisions I made throughout my short life, but I wonder: what will there be after death? a second chance? I pray that there is."
