Dinner with Trevor was going pretty well. My mom seemed to like him which was good. Everything was quiet my mom was asking Trevor questions, and my siblings were just focused on their food. Then I heard the front door open and then slam shut. “Daddy daddy” my little sister squealed as she ran into my father's arms.
“Hi, sweetheart how are you,” My dad said.
“I’m good. Daddy guess what guess what. Felix brought a new friend over,” Maggy said.
My dad walked into the dining room. My dad was about 6 feet tall with thinning blonde hair and blue eyes. He is somewhat fit but it is obvious to everyone but him that he has a belly growing.
“So what's this I hear that Felix brought a new friend over,” My dad said.
“Yes, that's right dear. This is Felix’s new friend Trevor,” My mom said.
Trevor stood up from the table and stuck his hand out. “Nice to meet you, sir,” Trevor said
My dad shook Trevor's hand. “Nice to meet you, young man,” my dad said.
“Honey sit down and fix yourself a plate. Then you can question Trevor,” My mom said.
My dad sat down across from Trevor. He filled his plate with food. He then took a bite out of a chicken leg. “So Trevor are you on the football team with Felix,” He said.
“No sir me and Felix are partners for a project in science class,” Trevor said.
“I see. So why are you wearing my son's jersey?” He asked
“He is wearing my jersey because his shirt got ruined. So I lent him my jersey,” I said hastily.
“Well be careful when people so a guy wearing another guy's clothing they might get the wrong idea, he said.
“And what idea would that be dad,” I said.
“Well, you know. When people see two guys hanging out together and one is wearing the other clothes they might get the idea that they might be queer,” He said.
“Honey, I don't think that this is the time for this,” My mom said.
“You know back in my day it was looked down on for a man to be with another man. Now it seems that there are even more queer couples. You know I went to a city last month and I saw two men kissing in public. And on tv, I saw a show where two women were raising a family. I am just glad that I have a son like Felix. Someone who has girls chasing after him and if he wasn’t busy with Football I’m sure he would have a girlfriend.” He said.
“Well what if I don’t want a girlfriend,” I said. I hated this I gave him the excuse that I was too focused on football to get a girlfriend. Yet he keeps saying that I can have a girlfriend during the football season.
“Come on you are just being modest. A handsome young man like you could get any girl you want,” My dad said.
“Dad just because I can get any girl doesn’t mean I want to,” I said.
“Come on Felix I think Trevor might get the wrong impression of you,” He said.
“And what impression would that be,” I said my voice getting louder.
“Felix you know what I mean. You don’t want your new friend here thinking you are gay,” My dad said. And that set me off.
“And would that be so wrong? Me being gay,” I said. My voice louder and angrier.
“Felix you know that lifestyle goes against our beliefs,” Dad said.
“Well what if those beliefs are wrong. Tell me what is wrong with two men or two women loving each other. What gives you to judge people just because of who they love,” I said.
“Felix you need to watch your tone especially when you have guests over. Do understand me, boy,”
I stood up from the table. “May I be excused,” I said.
“Sure dear,” My mom said.
I went up to my room. I slammed my bedroom door and laid on my bed. Then there was a knock at my door. “Felix are you okay,” It was Trevor. I got up from my bed and opened the door.
“Hey Felix you left the table so suddenly,” He said.
“I’m sorry. I just couldn’t take what my dad was saying. I’m sorry you shouldn’t have had to listen to his bigoted comments,” I said.
“I am fine. Frankly, it's not the first time I have heard that stuff. I just wanted to check up on you. You’re the one who seemed bothered by what he was saying.” Trevor said.
“Of course, I was bothered by it. What am I supposed to do? He wants me to play football, get good grades, and get a girlfriend. I like playing football and I can get good grades, but I can’t get a girlfriend because I don’t want one. I will never want one. It's not like I could tell him that. God what would he think to know that his son was gay,” I said. I then sat on my bed. I was too frustrated and upset I couldn’t hold back the tears that were coming out.
Trevor then put his arms around me. “It’s okay. Trust me I know more than how hard it is to come to terms with one's sexuality. Some people can accept you for who you are while others treat you like shit. They think there is something wrong with you. If you listen to them then you shut part of yourself away. You can’t do that you need to be true to who you are. You shouldn’t let what other people think to get you down. Because you are amazing. You are so cool. You are the captain of the football team. You get good grades and you are a really nice person. Seriously who would lend a shirt to someone who he doesn’t even know. I barely know you, but I can already tell that you are an amazing person,” He said.
I lifted my head tears and snot were coming from my face. I grabbed a shirt from my laundry basket and used it to wipe my nose. “Thank you Trevor you’re the amazing one. I really like you, Trevor you’re a great friend,” I said.
“I like you too Felix you are a really nice guy,” Trevor said.
“Trevor I have something I want to ask you,” I said
“Sure what is it Felix,” Trevor said.
“Homecoming is next week would you like to go with me,” I asked him.
“Are you sure you want to go with me? I thought you didn’t want to come out yet,” He said.
“That's what I thought. I don’t want to hide who I am. Especially when I am with you,” I said.
“So is this your attempt of asking me out,” He asked.
“I guess it is,” I said
“Um I don’t know could you wait until Monday for my answer,” Trevor said.
“Yeah that's fine I will wait for your answer,” I said.
