I notified Cassey, Danielle, and Martin that I am coming to deliver brownies. They were all in their houses so I went on my way.
First, I hit Cassey's first since she’s the closest, then Danielle’s, theirs are midway between Cassey's and Martin’s. Last stop, Martin’s.
Martin was already waiting on the veranda and he came down when he heard the bike breaks squeal. I was happy as my mind was buzzing with how to introduce myself if another person opened the door.
“Hey”
“Brownies”
He took them.
“It's still cold, I put them in the fridge.”
“I like it cold. Cute cat sticker.”
“I got it online, they come in a roll. They keep the parchment close.”
“Smells nice, come in.”
Are his parents home? His sister? What do I say? Do I look okay? What if they also want brownies and I only brought enough for one? What if they think I’m rude?
“Yeah, of course, thank you.”
“Don't be so formal.” he giggled
“Uh yeah sure.”
His parents were home. Mrs. Allegre was a short woman, she was watching TV beside Mr. Allegre. He was also short. Their children on the other hand were not. His sister, Kaia, was tall for her age, 14. I introduced myself in the most polite way I could think of.
“So you're the guy he met in the Plaza.”
“Yes, ma'am.”
“Please just call me Lena.”
“Yes, Lena.”
“It still sounds formal.”
“Sorry.”
“No, it's okay.”
“We’ll go to my room,” Martin saved me from myself.
“Okay”
“Thank you, ma'am, sir.” I couldn't just shut my mouth.
Martin’s room was upstairs. The sun colored the room golden. It was clean but not too clean. His bed was beside the west window where the sun came in. His sheets had adventure time characters on them. On the other side, a table with an arranged array of color pencils. Beside it, a shelf of books. And on the walls were posters, drawings, and random notes pinned to it.
I stood in the middle of the room until he gestured for me to sit on the bed.
“I like your sheets.”
“I got them for cheap in the mall.”
“How much?”
“75 percent off I think.”
“I need new sheets.”
He took a bite of the brownie. I held my breath.
“Wow, this is a legit brownie.”
“Thanks.” I must've smiled cause he smiled too.
“I like the salt on top, it complements the sweet.”
His laptop had a few stickers on it, he added the cat sticker to it.
We talked about nothing. Talked in between comfortable silences. We listened to music. I watched as his dark eyes lighten in the sun rays. I watched everything about him, his prominent canines, the mole on his left cheek that I haven't noticed before. We played with his cats, Rufus and Mateo. I observed as the golden room darkened, and I had to go home.
