The cold drove a sharp finger down his spine as the water splashed across his face. Michael looked at himself in the mirror. It was clear with an ornate frame running around its edge, curling and swirling like the water down the drain. He could smell something sinister around him.
He looked around and found the toilet right beside him. It was a small bathroom. Just enough space to fit a shower head along with the other essentials. The walls were covered in small, pink tiles that morphed into larger versions of themselves on the floor. A bag lay near his feet, resting against the door. There was a poster hung above the door of a movie that Michael had never seen.
He looked back at himself in the mirror and watched as the water dripped off his face. He realized that the tap had still been running and turned it off. He slid his hand into his pocket, searching for a handkerchief. He found a few tissues instead. He wiped his face and threw them into the bin under the sink.
Michael looked around the bathroom again.
He had no recollection of where he was. He wasn’t sure if this was his house. If it was, there were a lot of people waiting outside whenever he decided to step out. He could hear them talking over the hum of music seeping into the bathroom.
Michael pushed the toilet seat down, sat on it and pulled the bag towards him. He wasn’t sure if it was his but he assumed it would be since he was the only one there. The stench was definitely coming from the bag.
He opened it up and found two strange things inside, a topaz rock the size of his head, carved to precision and a dead rabbit. The jagged edges at the bottom of the egg shaped stone warped into snake like figures as they travelled to the apex. It rested heavy in his hand, dense and alive. The dead animal lay curled up, its eyes wide open. He put the rock back into the bag and closed it, trying his best to dissipate the stink that had spread into the bathroom.
He flung the bag onto his back and walked out into the room outside. He knew he had to get out of there immediately.
