When Zach got back from fixing the tavern’s well, he was pleasantly greeted with a detailed design of Nick’s sword. It had a slender blade almost like a rapier but it had a variation of the width. Normally a rapier was a long flexible blade that almost whipped you. But this design had a width that was wider, not as wide as a broad sword but like a median between the two. Also the design included something to protect the weider's hand, a cup hilt with jems studded in it.
“I see you started on the design. Mind if you explain why you designed it this way?” Zach said as he sat down in the booth.
“Oh well I wanted the sword to move like a rapier but have the crushing strength of a broadsword.” Nick explained.
“Ok, but you have to remember that durability comes into action here. What would you do if you started combat but the first blow you dish out snaps the blade. A rapier has a tripointed blade, like a triangular tube. It allows for flexibility so the strength is high. But if you have a flat blade this thin it’s structure won’t allow for flexibility.” Zach said, a little confused.
“Oh, well I was hoping you could whip up an easy sciency doodad.” Nick said, a little crushed.
“I come up with lots of sciency doodads. But none of them are easy, each one of my inventions took hours of planning alone. Three times as much actually applying it to real life. My Bo staff took my five months to design, create, and twiek. The very first prototype exploded because there was an imbalance between the metal and the tinrith.” Zach said, causing Nick to look down in disappointment, “However, that will not stop me from trying.” Nick looked up with hopefulness.
“It’s a start, but can you also explain the cuphilt to me, when you came to me you didn't want anything fancy. What changed your mind?” Zach asked.
“Oh well I don't really have the stomach for war, so this really is an illusion sword. So the reason why I wanted the sword shaped like this is to increase it’s resonance. So as I am swishing it about, the blade would resonate and the sun would catch the jewels and distract my enemy.” Nick said.
“Oh so the ringing and the flashing would put your combatant in a trance?” Zach asked.
“Hopefully yea, then I could just knock them out.” Nick said gleefully.
“That's a really intelligent idea. I’m impressed.” Zach said.
Just then their food was served. “Thanks for the help fixing our well. Dinner’s on the house.” the barmaid said, winking at Zach.
“Oh thanks but I’d rather pay for my share, nothing against you, but I pay for my way.” Zach said.
“Oh? What about not turning down a free meal?” Nick piped in.
“I would have paid for my share anyway.” Zach said, giving Nick a big grin.
While they ate they listened to the minstrel, he was singing one of the well known songs called “Tea’s a plenty”.
