REMINDER: Please read the pages from right to left, manga-style!
Hi everyone! Author-san here. Just wanted to thank you for taking the time to read the first panels of Anima: The Natural Order! Whether you're here to learn more about environmental protection and conservation, or interested to see my own take on folklore action, I'm very grateful that you gave Anima a chance!
Anima is my "ikigai" project - using my professional skills in communication and storytelling to further my personal advocacy for the environment and for science through my favorite interest and art medium: manga and anime. I hope you enjoy the journey and I hope you'll be patient with me and my partner artist, October, as we try to update Anima despite our work/school lives.
My goal is that, after reading even just parts of Anima, that you will be more interested in learning more about the environment and how you can help conserve it and the living beings residing in this planet with us. Thank you!
Animism, the belief that objects, places, and creatures all possess a distinctive spiritual essence, has been around for thousands of years. People who could see, perceive, control, and wield Anima, known as Animists, have existed to maintain balance and order in both the natural and modern world. But with the indomitable speed at which society is “developing”, the world has found itself in a never-before seen imbalance, and symptoms – such as diseases, the climate crisis, natural disasters, violence, poverty, inequality – are starting to worsen at an alarming rate. What’s more, rogue animists are starting to make their move, taking advantage of the imbalance to start an Anima warfare known as The Reset. Animists under The Natural Order need to prepare and act – fast.
Meanwhile, Hiroto Chidou, a 16 year old high school student who has always been considered “gifted” by his community, has fully awakened his Animist abilities in the aftermath of a natural disaster. His awakening was discovered by The Natural Order, and so he is brought to The Great Forest, one of the four global headquarters of The Natural Order, masquerading itself as the Morikuni Science Academy – one of Japan’s top educational institutions and producers of renowned experts in the field of natural science.
