Emmett
When a white boy breaks out the spanish, it's bad news! Sorry daddy, but we all knew it!
At 17, you know your parents pretty well. You know what sets them off, you know which parent to ask for any specific thing. You know when they're in a good mood and who to run to ask for help in case of an emergency or simply if you fucked up.
It comes with being raised by them, the close proximity, the living together. You have them both wired! Like John just said, he knew which parent to ask for my sister's hand. Though that's an easy one.
So of course, both my sister and I knew that when daddy started speaking spanish, brace yourself! It's never good!
He always used to tell us the worst news in foreign tongue so it would soften the blow. It didn't. Just made us beware of the spanish language as it comes with shocking news from your grandparents moving out of the pack house to someone had died.
With that being said, I could never have prepared myself for what he was about to say. Not in a million years! I also don't know how uncle Nate knew about it, but that's beside the point.
"Son, I know who your mate is!" - Daddy told me, serious as a heart attack.
"What?! How can you possibly know?" - I asked him, looking as shocked as ever.
Rosalyn was livid.
"Traitor! How can you do this to me?!" - She yelled. She cried, so John comforted her.
"I'm sorry! I can't keep this a secret from my son! I would do the same for you if I could!" - Daddy apologized. Though, if you ask me, he had nothing to apologize for.
But Rosalyn looked inconsolable. I'd feel for her, but I'm too excited to care. I've been waiting almost a month to know anything about my mate's identity.
"Daddy, please tell me now!" - I demanded. I was desperately eager to know about her.
"You know your grandfather is retiring, right?" - He replied, looking at me.
"Oh my Goddess!" - Rosalyn yelled. - "She's the daughter of the new Chief of Police!"
We all nearly fell from our chairs we're so shocked. I mean, who saw it coming?
I'm mated to the daughter of the Police Chief just like my uncle (and dad)!? What the actual fuck!
"Yes, Rosalyn, damn girl! Way to steal my thunder!" - Daddy snickered.
"Dan, this is the part when you say the Goddess must be punishing you to mate your son with the Chief of Police's daughter." - Aunt Denise joked. Or at least I think she's joking, I can't tell!
"Good one, little sister. Felix, how did you find out?" - Dad asked him. I'm curious too. We all are.
"When I got the invitation to my father's retirement party next Friday, I also got the news about who'd replace him. And in his bio said: Police Chief Morton Cole moves to Rutherford Falls with his wife Dolores and 2 daughters Samantha and Samara. When I read the name, I clicked with what Emm had told us about his mate, so I did a quick search and found her social media. I saw what she looked like. It has to be her!" - Daddy explained, proud of himself.
"Oh my Goddess!" - I yelled. I smiled from ear to ear.
"Thank you, daddy!" - I rushed to hug him. I hugged him so tight I might have suffocated him a bit, not that he complained. He basked in my warm embrace.
"Here's a picture of her, Emm." - Daddy took out his phone and showed me her photo on social media.
Suddenly, I was in awe, enamored, starstruck. She's everything I dreamed about and more. She's beautiful and blonde, just the way I like it. I knew it was her right away, it matches my dream girl. Literally.
"I can't believe you did this to me!" - Rosalyn was so upset she's shaking.
"It's not Felix's fault, Rosalyn. It's just serendipitous!" - Dad defended his mate. - "The Police Chief's daughter. Hope you don't get arrested like Nate!" - Dad snickered. Uncle Nate did get arrested by granddad. It was a whole ordeal. Uncle Nate and aunt Daphne both grimaced.
"There's more." - Daddy spoke in a serious tone.
We all looked at him gobsmacked. Even uncle Nate, but something tells me he already knew what daddy was about to say. Damn, he's good!
"What? Did you invite her here so that my brother mates quicker?" - Rosalyn snickered. But she's still crying. John wouldn't leave her side. None of us are eating anymore.
"Of course, not! Are you crazy? I don't invite humans to the pack house! It's forbidden, even to me! Plus, I would never actually interfere in the ascension. It's not my fault this information fell onto my lap!" - Daddy screamed. He looked pissed at the accusation.
We barely had time to breathe after he said that.
"I don't want you to get your hopes up, son, but there's a small chance that she'll be there at the retirement party next Friday. And we're all invited." - Daddy spoke and we're floored.
I mean, Rosalyn and I almost did fell down. Just not for the same reasons.
"I can't believe I'm gonna meet my mate! And I don't even have to wait till Fall!" - I gasped.
"You are the best damn dad in the entire world! No offense, uncles." - I croaked. I was beaming with joy.
"Son, it's a possibility. It's not for sure yet. I mean, we won't know til we get there!" - Daddy tried to calm me down.
But there's no calming me down! Now nothing can hold me back from becoming Alpha!
"Emm, just keep in mind that we have to wait till you're 18 to be sure. I mean, you can't ascend till your eyes are black, literally!" - Dad warned me.
"I know, dad. Chill!" - I replied. I did know that. But that's the easy part. The battle was yet to come when I do see her in person.
"Rosalyn, I'm so sorry! But if Emmett meets his mate next Friday, even though he's still 17, he will ascend as Alpha! There's nothing I can do. That's the rule! We'll just wait till 18 for confirmation, but it's next to impossible that he dreamed about someone not his mate! I'm deeply sorry, it's out of my hands!" - Dad exclaimed in his Alpha voice. Rosalyn cried harder.
"I know, dad." - Rosalyn replied, though her voice was wrought with emotion. I tried to empathize with her, but I couldn't stop smiling. I just couldn't.
"Felix, I know it's a long shot, but can I ask..." - Aunt Daphne wondered. What? I don't know.
"I know, Daph, I thought about it too! But unfortunately her sister is 15, just like..." - Daddy informed. Then I got it. They thought it could be 2 for 2 again. No such luck!
"The unmateable! Thanks mom, it's worth a shot though I don't think Rosalyn's mate is s girl. No offense, uncles." - John snickered.
"Wow son, you're so straight you think you ruined your cousin for the ladies! Good one!" - She teased him.
"He's right though, but thanks aunt Daph. It's worth asking!" - Rosalyn spoke, she looked so defeated it was heartbreaking.🥺
"Rosalyn, look at me!" - Daddy called her out. - "You still can dream about your mate any time from today till next Friday. Especially if he's a werewolf, you'll win!" - Daddy cheered her up.
I cried out to daddy, shook at the implication. Though he didn't lie. It's very possible. I wouldn't put it past the Goddess. Maybe she likes the excitement of playing with us mortals.
"Thanks, daddy. I love you for saying that. And I don't really blame you. If the Goddess wanted me to ascend she'd give me a dream. I get it!" - She spoke so sadly, I nearly cried myself.
"I wish I could spend the entire night holding you!" - John told her. Dad wasn't amused.
"I will command Denise to sleep in Rosalyn's room if need be. Don't even think about it!" - Dad threatened. He certainly wasn't joking.
"If you brats make me sleep away from Tony, you'll leave training crawling tomorrow. That's a promise!" - Aunt Denise threatened. She did not look happy. Aunt Daphne looked scared.
"Oh my Goddess! I meant just to hold her, you people are sick!" - John barked, looking disgusted.
"Aunt Denise, can't you just say no to uncle Dan?" - John asked her, innocently.
Everyone and I mean every single person laughed at him, except for aunt Daphne.
"Nathaniel, have you taught him nothing? It's like he wasn't raised by a wolf!" - Dad snickered.
"Son, you can't say no to the Alpha! You can only impeach him if he abuses his power. If you disobey him, you can either be expelled or killed, depending on the infraction!" - Uncle Nate explained, dead seriously.
"Next thing you know, he'll ask if the warriors can say no to me!" - Aunt Denise joked.
"Delta Huntington, no one say no to you!" - John croaked.
"Not if they know what's good for them!" - She stated menacingly. We leave the dining hall.
The next day was the full moon ceremony. It was a monthly chance for the pack to gather around and commute. It's nice seeing your friends and family all together.
It's also a good chance for dad to give one of his boring speeches.
"Good evening, my beloved pack family!" - He started. The crowd cheered from all around the compound.
"As you all know by now, this is my last year as Alpha of the pack. And yes, I get asked a lot which one of my children will succeed me. But the answer is I don't know. I can't choose between them. So I told them whoever gets mated first will ascend. Let the Goddess decide cause I can't." - He stated.
"Yes, I'm aware is a cop out, but show of hands which one of you who have a family would choose between your children?" - He pondered and looked around. No one said anything.
"Maybe in the past it'd be an easy answer, but if I've learned anything from my mom and sister is that women can do everything men can just as well if not better!" - He said and the crowd went wild. We couldn't hear anything but claps and screams.
"So my point is I don't know who'll succeed me, I just hope they are just and fair as all of you deserve." - Dad continued. They applauded.
"On a serious note, I'm sad to report that both my nephew and daughter were attacked by two rogues at the waterfalls, less than a month ago."
The crowd gasped.
"As you all know or have heard, I almost lost my Luna 19 years ago to rogues. And it was the most traumatizing experience of my life!" - Dad frowned.
"Thankfully, my nephew was able to kill a rogue and our warriors finished the other off. They were both unharmed. A round of applause to the pack warriors!" - Dad asked and they clapped.
"As a father, like most of you, I can't imagine losing a child and have to be vigilant that if it can happen to my daughter, it can happen to any of yours too. That's why I have doubled the patrols on the main territory so that these things don't ever happen again!" - He spoke. They applauded.
"But it also got me thinking: we are the largest pack of the East Coast. We already have great warriors who train everyday to protect our pack. We're not in the dark age anymore, we don't need the strongest of all of us to be Alpha, we need the smartest one!"
"Which is why I'm proposing a referendum to change the law of the pack. I propose that when the new Alpha ascends, they be challenged by ideas not muscle."
"I propose that we don't lose more of our warriors trying to be Alpha. I think the smartest person should be Alpha, not the strongest." - He stated. Everyone gasped.
"Hopefully this way, we can take this wonderful pack ahead in it's glory for a new generation." - Dad concluded. Everyone was gobsmacked at his words. No pack has ever changed its Alpha challenge before in the entire East Coast. It's a fight to the death in wolf form. It has always been this way for hundreds of years.
"But don't worry, nothing will be done without your approval. Within a week or two, all pack members will receive an e-mail with my proposal. At the next ceremony, there'll be a ballot available for all of you and you can vote anonymously."
"Whichever you decide, I'll abide. Now, as it is the law, I open the podium for challengers!"
Gotta hand it to my dad, he sure knew how to speak. And that was a bomb to end all bombs! Damn, dad. Way to fuck it up for the next generation!
