It was a cold chilly gray morning when the two Muiner children set off towards the bakery. Mrs. Muiner had to be back before the restaurant opened and bakers are always up early after all.
Mrs. Muiner: “Quit dawdling you two.”
Davon: “Madge I’m scared. We have never actually been inside the bakery before so we have no idea what the baker is like. What if he is mean?”
Madge: “I don’t think you can be mean when you make such sweet delicious things. She thought hopefully.”
As they enter the bakery the baker smiles cheerily as the three walk-ins. Mrs. Muiner in front as Madge and Davon hide behind her.
Baker: “Well now I have never seen you in here before. What can I do you for?”
Mrs. Muiner: “Excuse me, Mr. uh.”
Baker: “Laifierre.”
Mrs. Muiner: “Mr. Laifierre you see I am so embarrassed to tell you this and I sincerely apologize, but my two children took 2 loaves of bread from you yesterday. Times are a bit hard, she admits with shame in her voice and I have no way to repay you.”
Laifierre: “I see…”
The baker was not angry, instead he just felt rather sad to see a family struggling.
Mrs. Muiner: “So I brought them here to help you for the day to compensate. Cleaning, sweeping, helping you mix your batters. Whatever you need them to do. I am so sorry and I know it isn’t as ideal as getting paid, but it is the best I can do right now. I promise as soon as we have the money we can pay you back.”
Laifierre : *Smiles broadly* “I appreciate your honesty and I would be happy to have two little helpers. Think nothing of it and consider their work a repayment of your debt.”
Mrs. Muiner: *Sighs with a sense of relief*: “Thank you, thank you so much. *Turning to Madge and Davon* Now you two behave and attend to everything Mr. Laifierre asks of you. Come straight home after you’re finished here. Do you understand?”
Both children: “Yes mother.”
Mrs. Muiner: “Good.” *Hugs them both and heads on her way*
The day passed on and the baker taught the children some new skills. He was familiar with the family restaurant and knew they probably already knew how to sweep and mop, so he taught them how to prep and mix batter as well as how to count change. After some time passed, the children had to be on their way, and the baker handed them a box of treacle tarts.
Laifierre: “Here you go. For all your hard work I am sending you five tarts so everyone in your family may have one. Remember the batter we were mixing early? This is what it made, he says peeling back the lid of the box revealing the crisp gooey tarts.”
Both children together: “Thank you Mr. Laferrie.”
