Once they had made their way down the winding, dusty path lined with trees beginning to bare while others clung to their rustic earthy-toned leaves of red, gold, orange, and brown they had finally come across what they were searching for. Although this path was unfamiliar to them they had finally come across a wishing well which is a bit odd all things considered since it is not one they had ever seen before. There was nothing overly special about this particular well; it was rather standard looking in fact. Thatched hay roof with old wooden beams to connect it to the well's base which consisted of a myriad of smooth stones of all different colors and sizes. No inscriptions or markings, not even a plaque indicating this well possessed any sort of magical abilities, but children will be children and thus they plodded on.
Madge: “Ha! We found one. I told you we would Davon. I told you so!”
Davon: Thinks thoughtfully for a moment trying to come up with the right words not wanting to entirely snuff his sister's high hopes. “Madge, don't you think this is sus suspic lets out an impatient sigh, strange?”
Madge: interjects “SUSPICIOUS” punctuating every syllable. “Besides, what is so suspicious about it? There has always been talk of magic here. Just look at all the books the library has talking about all kinds of things that are somehow magical in nature.”
Davon begins to grow impatient that Madge was completely missing the point and continues to scowl.
Davon: “Because Madge.” he says growing exasperated, why does all of that even matter? “What makes now any different than any of the other times we've been in these woods? Isn't it strange to you we just happened upon this path we've never been on before and it led us right to a well? And another thing, did you even look at that coin? What makes it so special?” He takes the coin and examines it. It wasn’t special looking, a two-sided golden bronze coin rimmed with a beautiful teal color. The top was inscribed in gold with the words Not what while the bottom was inscribed but who. On one side there was a singular owl in an impressively sized nest while the other side had a family of four owls who all lived together in the hole of a big old oak tree. “What the heck does that even mean? Not what but who? This stuff only ever works in fairy tales I told you. You should just give it back to the man. You know how dad feels about stealing.”
Madge: “Because Davon it has to work you saw how bad that man wanted it back and besides we need it more.”
Davon: “You don't know that Madge, maybe someone special to him gave him it. How do you know we need it more? Besides, this well is just ordinary looking. Say this coin or well is special, maybe to activate their powers you need to pray to a certain God or maybe say a certain prayer, some sorta chant, or utter the magic words? We don't know which one it might be and say this is true and you throw it in there and nothing happens anyways or something bad happens. That man even said you'll be sorry.”
Madge: “Davon, that's just because he wanted this coin back. Not only that, it's unlike any coin I've seen before.”
Davon mutters, “it's not like we've seen much money.” Madge ignores him and continues: “I don't think we would have been able to find a well if this coin wasn't capable of granting wishes.”
Davon begins back down the path towards home grumbling: “Throw it in if you want but don't expect me to not say I told you so when nothing happens and with that, he leaves Madge there alone to contemplate what to do. ”
She was a bit taken aback because usually, she can weasel Davon into doing anything. She sits down and studies the coin for a while then walks around the outside of the well. What if Davon's right she thought. What if there is something you have to say or do before you make your wish? Staring at the coin some more she tries to think. “There is no God I know of that has anything to do with owls... If I just pray to my God but the magic the coin possesses comes from another God will it still work?,” with that, she kneels and begins to pray.
“Balder son of Odin and Frigg, the god of kindness and fairness therefore unto you I pray bless me and my family. I kneel before thee and ask that you allow this coin to make my wish come true. She closes her eyes and squeezes the coin tight. I wish my parents could be as rich as kings and queens.” With that, she tosses in the coin listening for the splish to ensure it had made it to the bottom. She peers in looking for any indication her wish had been granted seeing none she heads back to the orchard to retrieve apples after all she needed a reason as to why Davon beat her home.
