Mrs. Muiner sees Davon making his way up the path and calls out to him. "Davon there you are!" "How was the bakery?" "Where is Madge?" "Why do you two never seem to come back together?"
Davon: “It was fine mother,” he says, trying to hide his sour mood. “The baker gave us some tarts, he said, passing her the box.” “I ate mine already. Madge went to pick apples,” he said carefully. He was fairly sure she would have gone there to throw off any suspicion as to why she was arriving home later.
Mrs. Muiner: “That's good dear. Why didn't you stay behind and help? Besides, I don't remember her taking any kind of sack. How will she even carry them?”
Davon: “I'm just tired. I didn't feel like it.”
Mrs. Muiner: “Well, alright then go see if your father has any remaining tasks he needs help with before the shop closes down for the night.”
Davon: "Yes mother," he says warily. It was a long day after all they had been up since early morning and had a great deal of excitement.
Madge: "Stupid stupid," she mutters to herself. "I could kick myself," she says struggling on the journey back, arms full of apples. “I can't believe I forgot a sack,” she grumbles.
As she makes her way up to the restaurant door she gives it a slight kick since her hands were too full to open it.
Mrs. Muiner opens the door: “Madge, there you are. You're just in time for dinner. You didn't have to worry about getting apples if you didn't have a sack my darling. Why does Davon seem so moody?”
Madge: “It's okay mother, I don't mind besides they smell sweet and delicious. I don't know, he is always in a mood. You know he hates getting up early.”
Mrs. Muiner: “You're certainly right about that. So are we going to keep our hands to ourselves and out of other people's breadbaskets hm? she says, reaching out tickling her. Waking up at 9 is certainly better than 6 isn't it?”
Madge: “Yes mother,” she says giggling. “I hope we see the Baker again soon. His shop always smells delicious and I want to try them all! Its hard work, taking his bread was wrong… he was very nice to us.”
Mrs. Muiner: "Maybe one of these days we can. Go wash up before dinner.”
Madge: “Yes mother.”
As Madge scampers away, Mrs. Muiner couldn't help but smile.
The family sits down for dinner once again everyone is happy except for Davon. Who was still brooding over what Madge had done. They were all looking forward to the end of the meal. It was rare for them to have dessert let alone fresh dessert. With this in mind, they peacefully enjoyed it and we're grateful for this rare occasion.
Days turned to weeks then weeks turned to months and still no change had come for the Muiners. Madge felt so disappointed as did Davon but being able to gloat that he was right and his older sister was wrong felt good. He did still however prefer it did come true because staying in poverty and gloating paled in comparison to full bellies and sturdy walls. Madge wondered what had gone wrong and she began to resent Balder. Why should my family live this way? Do they not deserve a better life? Unbeknownst to Madge however, change was coming very soon.
