In the beginning, there was nothing. Only Chaos existed, a dark void without light, without earth, and without substance. Out of this darkness bore Nyx, the primordial deity of the night, who together with Chaos created Erebus, the very substance of darkness. From this trinity came Aether, Hemera, Gaea, Ouranos, Pontus, Tartarus, and the other primordials which make up the universe. And from these Primordials came gods and goddesses, monsters and mythical beings, each with their own role to play within the mortal realm. But that's not important right now.
For it is in the Underworld that our story is set, lying just beneath the surface of Gaea. Formed from Erebus's darkness and expanded from Tartarus's abyss, it is the space that all entities go to after their departure from the mortal realm. Here, they are judged and sent off to exist for all eternity. This realm, so close to the physical and yet so far, is home to legions of unique characters, from the Furies to the Fates, to the Chthonic pantheon of deities that maintain the Underworld. Deep within the recesses of the Underworld flows a solitary river, whose tranquil waters belie a tragic loss. This river, like all others in the Underworld, has a guardian deity.
In the beginning, there was nothing... and then there were gods. Fast forward a couple of millennia and there are deities for running everything on Earth, and everything below it. Lethe, goddess of oblivion has spent her entire existence tending her Underworld river. Maybe it's time for this goddess to ascend to the surface.
