Saltpetre and Sage

Chapter 8

Chapter 8

Mar 26, 2022

“Any sensible person would be long gone by now, which obviously says a lot about me.” Wilt reflected as he climbed up the wall and through Lukas’ window again. He didn’t know what he expected to find but he just couldn’t leave without trying to find some resolution. He did a quick lap around the room, observing the layout. There wasn’t much to it; the room wasn’t very big and only sparsely furnished. A tidy bed was tucked in the corner with a small night stand that held a half burnt candle and simple wooden frame. Wilt expected to see the likeness of a pretty girl or a happy family but instead the frame held a single pressed flower. It had long dainty petals that shone a beautiful translucent white except the very tip of the petals where it transitioned into a dark blue. While it was a very pretty flower it seemed a strange thing to have framed on your bedside.

Wilt returned it carefully to the night stand and continued the search. The whole space was so neat and orderly, even the desk had all the papers stacked and sorted and the quills neatly lined up in a row. It was in stark contrast to Wilt’s own rooms which he liked to think of as organised chaos.

He hesitated a moment before he pulled open the top draw of the desk. Wilt suddenly felt a bit awkward invading his privacy like this, which was a strange thing for a thief to feel. Inside he found a sheaf of papers covered in illustrations of different plants and fungi. Wilt flipped through the pages admiring the skill and detail when a pair of familiar eyes looked back at him.

The last pages in the stack were all of him. Wilt was speechless; he had never seen a drawing of himself, it was so detailed and he couldn’t remember the last time he had smiled like that.

“Oh, I just know that I’m going to regret this decision.”

The people around Lukas have never expected much of him. The abandoned son of a thief, Lukas was always the first to blame for any trouble on the small town of Roads End.

So when a thief breaks into Arckvile Manor suspicion instantly falls on Lukas. But although he has nothing to do with the thief, somehow this stranger has the same face as the man haunting his dreams.

Now reviving the skills from his regrettable past may be his only hope as Lukas is dragged into a new world full of dangers.
