Kaden Vars
Vargas Corzon?
What the hell?
I couldn't speak, as though his presence had a chokehold over my words. It seemed like I wasn't the only one, too. Regis and Mari were now awake, wiping their eyes of sleep, and trying to understand the situation. Reyna only glared, trying to remain collected, but I saw conflicted anger on her face.
Our whole lives, we had been taught that the Castles were full of people who thought they were better than us. A bunch of rich elitists, who didn't care about anyone else who survived. When the Corzons arrived on the Antaris, whatever we learned was accurate. They came to our ship, our home, and took over, making it their playground. I understood why Reyna was mad, after all the Corzons were the reason her father was gone.
"Kaden Vars, was it? '' he questioned, breaking the awkward silence. "I understand that you've been chosen to be special."
I tilted my head, in confusion. What did he mean by special?
He wasn't very surprised by my reaction, but some bewilderment slipped through his face.
"I apologize for the extra precautions." he chuckled, gesturing an open hand. He glanced toward one of the two guards in the room and nodded. The guard made a slight bow in acknowledgment and walked over to the side of the bed to release my restraints.
"If you don't mind me asking, what are you talking about sir?" I responded, trying to seem as respectful as possible. After all, I was in no position to act out.
"My children have informed me that you have displayed the powers of someone whom we refer to as an Awakened."
Awakened? What the hell is that?
I looked over to Reyna and the others. The subtle anger on her face was now replaced with confusion as well.
"You were glowing!" Mari exclaimed, her eyes wide.
Glowing? What is she on about, now isn’t exactly the time to be playing games?
"What do you mean?" I finally responded.
"Perhaps I could explain." an unfamiliar voice came from the entrance. A girl with ash-blond hair walked into the room with more elegance than even the head Corzon, himself.
Her eyes held an ocean of blue and her pale skin seemed flawless. She wore a black high-collared jumpsuit, with her hair partially braided, while the rest hung down her back.
She was stunning.
If I'm not mistaken, this is...-
"Aeris Corzon, A pleasure to meet you," she said, finishing my thoughts.
I noticed someone leaning against the doorway behind her. A boy with the same ash-blond hair as the two Corzons who stood before me. He leaned against the open doorway, with a scowl, and scoffed. There was no introduction, but I knew who he was. Lunas Corzon, the twin brother to Aeris Corzon. Lunas wore a dark blue high-collared jumpsuit, similar to his sister's. He looked to be about my height. I could see his glaring blue eyes hiding behind his parted bangs.
What’s his problem?
Is this some sort of family gathering?
“I take it by your reaction you have no idea why you’re here.” she continued. “As the little girl said, you were glowing or, rather, Awakening.”
Awakening? What the hell is that?
The hospital room began to feel cramped. Everyone except the Corzons seemed to be in confusion.
“Perhaps we can explain when there are fewer ears present.” the Corzon head said. “I only allowed these children here, because my guards informed me that they were your family.” he continued.
“It appears though, after reading your files, that you are not of the same blood. It seems the only other records of blood relatives are from fifteen years ago,” he said.
He paused for a moment.
“A Kara Vars,” he continued.
I didn’t have much recollection of my mother, since I was only two years old when we launched into space. I was told that she had become sick after a few months. The doctors never found out why. Nobody wanted to help a sick woman her infant during the crisis. When my mother passed away, my mentor, Laros, was there for me. Laros was an engineer, and when I was old enough he taught me everything he knew about the Antaris.
“I’ll have one of my guards escort your family back to their proper quarters,” he said in a demanding tone while nodding to one of his guards.
Mari looked like she was about to say something, but when she opened her mouth, Reyna put a hand over it to stop her.
“We can take care of ourselves,” she responded with a shaky voice.
“This is not a request.” he insisted. “After all, your people witnessed a strange power for the first time, there is bound to panic.” he went on.
Reyna didn’t respond, she only rolled her eyes and motioned the others to get up. She attempted to remain collective, but her anger seeped through. The three of them then got up and headed towards the door with the guard.
“We’ll see you later right Kaden?” She said as she nodded with a fake smile before the door closed. Then they were gone.
I faced the Corzon Head, who was now sitting in the empty chair that Reyna was in. Aeris went to stand behind her father, while Lunas leaned on the wall near the door.
What exactly do these people have planned for me?
I sat before three of the Corzons – something that I never would have imagined – and I felt small as they all looked down at me.
“Now shall we get started?”
