XVIII. It Only Shines for Us

XVIII. It Only Shines for Us

Apr 05, 2022

An adorable joyful chant was heard on a Friday morning tide. It was Koharu wiping the floor with white dry cloth at the hallway outside Yumeko’s room.

“Hmmm…hmmmm…” She hummed as she wiped and glided left to right and vice versa.

“Merry on Fri---day!” she continued to sing with her small voice while enjoying her Friday task.

Yumeko, who was still on her bed, was subconsciously listening. She got up and her feet danced to the rhythm of Koharu’s chant. Her heart was lively and frenzied unlike any other day.

She slowly opened her eyes, sat down on her vanity chair, and her breath almost stopped seeing the unfolded paper plane origami in blue geometric patterns. Those were sent by her neighbor yesterday, when the rain faded away. She finally realized that dream time was overdue.

Her eyes blossomed as she quickly peeked outside.

“You missed it. It was out a few minutes ago,” a silvery, pleasant voice was heard.

“It’s him.”

Yumeko could not see the young man instantly for the sun rays were beaming towards her direction.

“Ah..It’s fine! As long as it never gets tired of shining for me, I mean…for us…I mean…for everyone!” She replied as she put on her big pleasant smile.

She could not hide her excitement.

Kengo, averted his sight in to the surroundings and caught no glance of the villagers passing by as it was still early in the morning. He looked at Yumeko and gently smiled.

“I think, at this moment, it only shines for us.”

The young lady could not explain her elated feelings upon hearing it. The word us repeatedly played in her mind like a broken phonograph disk record. The echoed voices of the young man was rewinding insider her head.

“I feel…overwhelmed. I can’t understand. It’s like my heart has just awaken from a long dream and now it’s in chaos.I haven’t known him for long and yet the string has tied this much. Or, I am just a weird girl giving meaning to that two-letter word?”

Then the sunbeam anchored to Kengo’s eyes, it was the first time Yumeko evidently saw it. “Beautiful,” softly said by the young lady. She never blinked.

“What’s with this familiar feeling?” she thought to herself, as she stared to the young man longer.

“Hosokawa-San, are you okay?”

“Is she still daydreaming? She just froze.” Kengo chuckled silently.

Whilst Yumeko left her senses, Kengo with such gentle voice already called her three times, on the last attempt of the young man, she responded.

“Hosokawa-san?”

The young girl was stunned, when he called her name. She then remembered that she introduced herself to the Higuchi’s servant. Yumeko desired to finally call his name.

“Ah! Yes, I am fine…Kengo. I mean Higuchi-san.”

“Kengo sounds better. I’ll have to go now. See you in the next break of dawn,” he softly grinned and left.

The young man thought that as long as the sun never lose its brightness, he would still continue to see the young lady. Before he pull his door handle, Yumeko-called her.

“Yumeko! Call me Yumeko.”

“I heard you...Yumeko....” The young man whispered with such beaming and grateful smile.

As soon as he got out, Mrs. Ikeda noticed that the young master was pleasantly grinning from ear to ear. She wondered if Kengo had a wonderful dream, when in fact it was not a dream at all.

Meanwhile, the chanting Koharu of the Hosokawa household heard her lady shouted something. She wanted to eavesdrops but she knocked and barged in. She saw her lady full of life, playing with the blue paper planes, and turning around gracefully.

She realized that her lady opened the window by herself today, unlike before.

Yumeko looked even more peaceful than the previous stressful and embarrassing days. She finally learned that her lady might have already apologized to the young man from the other side.

Yumeko was over the moon that she could not notice Koharu entered her room.

“Congratulations, my lady! You did it! No more throwing of pebbles, okay? Never again.” The young servant joked.

Yumeko was shocked.

“You scared me, Koharu. You should have knocked.”

“I knocked my lady. You’re here, but your soul wasn’t,” she replied.

The young servant noticed a different vibe from her lady, it seemed like something has blossomed insider her.

“I heard you shouted your name. Was that how you introduced yourself? I guess his eardrums must have broken, my lady.” She jokingly said.

And the clock ticked at seven, they started their morning routine to school before the weekends kicked off.

As Yumeko listened to the clicking noise of the bicycle’s pedal, she recalled the unusual feeling of familiarity when her eyes froze to the young man. She started to wonder if she had met the young man before she lost all the record of her past.

“I felt like all the sorrows slowly parted away from me the longer I stared at him.” She whispered.

“....for a while I became selfish and want it to only look at me.”

She smiled as her hand gripped tighter to the carrier. While she was having a deep thoughts,

a sparrow landed on Yumeko’s shoulder. She started to notice that she was riding on a bicycle for quite a long time. She scanned her surroundings and noticed that instead of passing by the traditional houses, she saw a wooden bridge and a wide green land. Yumeko looked back and realized her school was getting farther from her sight.

“Koharu! Where are we heading to?” Yumeko shouted.

She looked ahead and saw a boy with a curly blonde hair on a bicycle. It was Chiaki wearing his gakuran who was also on his way to school. Her young servant was absentmindedly following him. The two young hearts were daydreaming at the same time. Indeed, like master, like servant.

“Koharu! Wrong way!” she shouted again as if her throat was about break open.

The young servant got back to her senses.

“Oh! I am sorry my lady!” she panicked and sobbed out of guilt.

Koharu turned back and pedaled in a life or death speed. The wind was slapping through their faces, as they went down to the slope of the wooden bridge.

Chiaki stopped and looked back after hearing feminine voices, yet he just saw a smoke of dust on the road.

The two arrived at school on time, with such messy and teased hair.

“Is someone chasing you both?” Yui asked worriedly seeing how exhausted they were.

“Nothing!” they both replied catching their breath and forcing to smile.

Yui just agreed despite seeing the opposite and they went on their day until it ended.

Clock continued to ticked until the next subsequent days. Yumeko never had monotonous mornings from there on.
