What the hell was that?
I woke up in a cold sweat, confused and uncertain as to what I had just seen. The dream had felt so real like I was there in the moment. It was terrifying. I found myself in the same hospital room, only being lit by the neon blue monitors since the electronic window shade was on.
Maybe it was a vision?
I spent the next few minutes trying to figure out what I just dreamt but in the end, I just concluded that it was just my imagination. Since I hadn’t had time to properly be alone and think for myself so I thought it would this would be the perfect opportunity for the rest of my day.
Everything from getting caught, fighting in the arena, and now taking in all of this new information the Corzons, and Dr. Everett left me had moved by fast. It was a lot to take in on top of the bizarre dream that I had, which made me more physically and mentally exhausted.
A few hours had gone by, and a nurse had come by to check on me. She said I was good to go so long as I take it easy. She also left behind a black poncho that was supposedly a gift from Dr. Everett. I wasn’t sure if she was from the Corzon entourage, or if she was previously a nurse before they arrived but she seemed nice. She was a shorter lady with dark brown hair that was starting to grey, probably due to stress and age.
I looked at my arm – the one that supposedly turned into a magical blade – which was covered and wrapped in bandages. It still ached a bit, but the rest of my body seemed to have healed more than it.
Guess that’s one of the perks of being an Awakened.
A knock on the door told me that it was about time to head back home and see Reyna and the others. I hadn’t heard from them since the last time I saw them.
“Sir Vars, it’s time to be escorted back to your quarters.” a female voice called from outside the door.
Sir? Is that what I’ll have to get used to being called? I’d rather float than be on the same level as these pompous Corzons.
I got up and stretched since it had been a while since I was standing. The poncho left for me was at the end of my bed, and I slipped it on over my jacket.
Not bad.
I then walked over to the door and pressed a green open button that slid the door open. On the other side stood two Corzon guards. One was a young-looking female that looked about as tall as me. She had brunette hair that was only visible from the bun she kept tucked through the cap that matched her uniform. Her skin was sandy tan, and her eyes were a dark teal. The other guard was much older that was most likely in his late forties. He had brown hair that was beginning to grey –probably due to stress– and his eyes were a dark grey.
“A pleasure to meet you, Sir Vars. I am Darius Tath of the Corzon Guard. This is Terra, my protege,” he stated as she responded with a nod.
I was guided through the bustling halls of the medical ward located on level three. It wasn’t as lively up here as it was on the lower levels of the Antaris, but it was still somewhat crowded. The Antaris was a giant circular orbital ship divided into five levels.
The top-level –level five– was the bridge, and communications level, now run by the Corzon Guards. Only certain crew members were allowed access up there. The level below that was where the Corzons and their guards resided. I was sure that they'd made modifications to suit their grandiose lifestyle. There was nobody other than the great family’s entourage of guards and servants that had access to this level. Each elevator was guarded by at least two guards, and other guards made rotations passing them every so often. Level three –where we currently were– was the science and medicine level. From tests and experiments to those injured from the usual daily scrapes, or engineering accidents, the medical ward was full of people going in and out. Security was tight here, especially since my last visit here.
Whispers and conversations were happening as we walked by nurses, and patients staring most likely at me. The elevator was just around the corner and for a brief moment on the way to the next floor, I would have some more time to think. By the elevator, we were greeted by two more guards, who nodded at our arrival. When the elevator door opened, we stepped in and the small crowd that was whispering behind us was finally gone as the door closed.
There was an awkward silence among the three of us in the elevator.
Below the Science and Medicine level is the Market level, one of the most crowded. The floor was filled with vendors that sold nicknacks, recipes, and other goods that people manage to find useful or valuable. In other sections of this level, you can find all kinds of entertainment such as people playing instruments.
Maybe I should find Reyna something so she’ll be a bit less mad.
I rummaged through my pockets, and still had a few silver coins. Our currency on the Antaris was adapted to be like the other Castles. Four silver coins are equal to one gold coin. 10 gold coins are equal to a tab. Tabs are thin metallic slates that most people use to trade or buy with.
“Is it okay if we make a stop on the Market level?” I asked, scratching the back of my head, knowing it might not be a good idea.
“We’ve been tasked to escort you to your quarters, not to the Market,” Tath said.
Yeah, I figured as much.
“If we still make it to our destination, does how we got there matter?” Terra surprisingly said.
“Well… I supposed, but stay close to each other, it’s bound to be crowded and lively.”
“And please try to keep a low profile.”
