Eijirou was the first to wake, still in the same spot of the couch where he had cuddled up with Izuku the night before. He carefully detached himself from Izuku, trying his best not to wake anyone up but his effort was in vain. They were all heroes after all, trained to react to even the smallest of movements.
They all stirred, but didn’t wake completely. Eijirou had no doubt they were all aware of everything going on nonetheless, but he had a feeling that most of them were too hung over to care. At least judging by his lack of alcohol he usually kept in the fridge.
He went on to start breakfast. He always awoke hungry, and he had learned long ago it was best to have food ready when the others wake up unless he wanted Bakugou to take over the kitchen. As much as he loved cooking with his best friend, he likes to keep his utensils nice and that’s hard to do when Bakugou’s hands are constantly setting off little blasts.
He figured he’d go big and western today with Pancakes, Eggs, Bacon, and Hashbrowns. Things that are easy to make in large quantities, especially after looking at the clock and remembering that he had morning patrols today.
Once he was finished he set a bottle of aspirin and a bunch of bottles of water on the counter before going to wake Izuku.
He gently nudged the smaller boy before pressing a soft kiss to his forehead. “Bean, wake up. I have to leave soon,” he whispered.
Izuku’s eyes fluttered. Izuku always woke easily, it’s the adjusting to the waking world that is usually his problem. He mumbled something that was probably supposed to be a coherent sentence, but didn’t quite come out that way.
Eijirou smiled at the endearing sight, but moved on knowing that if he stayed much longer he wouldn’t leave the apartment. He shifted to the other end of the couch where Bakugou lay curled up in the beanbag chair. Boy sleeps like a cat. He nudged him with his foot. Bakugou opened one eye with a snarl. “For what reason-“
“Everyone is still asleep, and I have patrol. There's aspirin and breakfast in the kitchen, you can manage yourself right?” Eijirou interrupted before smiling at the soft expression Bakugou’s face morphed into. It was a miniscule change, one most wouldn’t notice, but he knew what it meant.
“See ya bro!” He laughed before walking out the door.

After that, everything was a blur.
Morning patrols are usually pretty easy. The last thing most villains want is to get up early on a Saturday to commit a crime. So though he was alert, since it was his job to be, he wasn’t completely vigilant.
He didn’t have time to react. Not when his adversary appeared before him, and immediately disappeared.
Eijirou hardened his skin before the villain could attack again.
The villain moved so quickly he almost couldn’t see them. For a moment, he thought the villain was just teleporting between attacks. That was before he noticed the blurs.
Eijirou relaxed too much after that. He assumed that the villain relied on their speed to prevent receiving attacks. Boy was he wrong.
Once he was able to see the blurs he was able to defend himself better by predicting the villains attacks. Once he was able to do that, he could deliver his own blows.
His hardened skin wasn’t only beneficial for defense, and though he generally did play on the defensive, he did know how to attack when he needed to. The hardened skin on his fists created a harsher impact than flesh on flesh.
However, his opponent was landing attacks more often than he was. Holding his hardening for long periods of time slowed him down, made his body heavier than it already was.
This only gave an advantage to the villain.
They went back and forth trading attacks for what felt like a long time, but in reality was probably only a few minutes.
That was before Eijirou felt a sharp pain and collapsed.
**
It was rare that a villain just attacked out of nowhere. Either they’ve been apprehended and decide to resist arrest, or they are out for a personal grudge. The latter usually comes with a big speech about revenge, or hero society.
It seemed out of place that the villain who attacked Eijirou didn’t speak a word. No one even reported seeing the attack, which generally means that it wasn’t an apprehension gone wrong.
This means that the attacker had planned this out to some extent, and intentionally went after Eijirou. Most likely for a personal reason. Eijirou was a planned target, but why?
There were so many things on Izuku’s mind as he sat there at his boyfriend's hospital bed. Mostly it was why? Why would someone deliberately attack Eijirou?
Izuku refused to just do nothing while Eijirou laid there unconscious, his assailants still out there in the world. But he didn’t want to leave either.
So he sat there. He sat there and strategized. He thought through the reports he’s read so many times that he’d practically memorized them.
However, he still had next to no information. Eijirou was the only one who was there to see the villain, so there were no first hand accounts. He had no clue what actually happened, other than basic forensic evidence.
He knew that the villain was fast judging by the footprints, or the lack of clear ones. And he knew that Eijirou was knocked out by a wound on the back of his head in addition to the fall to the concrete. He knew that the villain’s aim wasn’t to kill, because if it was, Eijirou would be dead right now, not just comatose.
The police are currently building a list of possible suspects based on the knowledge they have. Mainly just speed quirk and experience, so it’s a hope that the villain is a repeat offender and will be easy to identify at least if not easy to catch.
He made mental lists. Who might want to hurt Eijirou? Why might someone want to hurt Eijirou?
He didn’t know how long he had been making lists when a door opening interrupted his train of thought. He turned to the doorway to see the last person he would expect.
“Wracking your damn brain for information that isn’t fucking there isn’t going to help you” Bakugou said.
Izuku opened his mouth to speak but Bakugou wasn’t having it, “Listen, you damn nerd. It’s the cops job to do the research for cases like this. It’s the hero’s job to apprehend. The cops are doing their job, and I'm going to do mine. They’re damn well not gonna let you do it. You’re too close to the ‘victim’” Bakugou snarled at the last word. “ Which is bullshit, but your job is to stay here and take care of this dumbass.”
“I can’t just sit here, i need to do something-”
“There’s nothing you can do,” Bakugou growled. “What the fuck would i be here for if there was something we could do?”
Days passed and no new information arised. Izuku spent all of his time in Eijirou’s hospital room. The others came in and out, bringing gifts and food. Doctors did the same, but instead of gifts and food, they brought more tests.
It was two weeks before something finally happened.
It was two weeks of no progress, until things started beeping in Eijirou’s hospital room.
It was two weeks of searching for this villain and coming up empty when Eijirou opened his eyes.
It was two weeks of fruitless effort, when Eijirou came back.
Izuku cried.
He watched as Eijirou woke and he saw those carmine eyes for the first time in two weeks and tears streamed down his face. “Eiji…” He launched himself at the larger boy in the bed, holding him as tight as he could while also doing his best not to hurt him. “I missed you so much”
Eijirou gasped, but chuckled nonetheless. It wasn’t unusual to wake up in a hospital room in his line of work. “What happened?” He asked.
Izuku jerked back and looked extremely concerned. “How are you so calm?”
Eijirou was beginning to think he wasn’t just knocked out on a routine patrol or something. He didn’t really remember anything after going on patrol after leaving everyone in the apartment. “What happened?” he repeated, a little more panicked this time, “How long have I been out?”
“Wait, no don’t panic, I'm sorry.” Izuku spoke, taking Eijirou’s hand in his. “I’m just worried. What is the last thing you remember?”
“Leaving the agency to start on my patrol route.” He could see the relief in Izuku’s eyes, along with something else he couldn’t quite place.
Izuku reached to push the button on the chair that called a nurse, “You’ve been in a coma for 14 days. All we know is that a villain with some sort of speed type quirk attacked you and left you unconscious. Do you remember anything like that?”
Eijirou thought about it really hard. “Nothing in detail. I vaguely remember a really fast villain, but that’s it.” questions like this right after waking up were routine for him. At the moment he just wanted to get through it, talk to the doctors, get discharged, and get home. He may have just woken up but he was tired.
Izuku sighed, “That’s about what I expected.” His tears had slowed and his voice was almost steady now. “We’ve been looking for the villain since you were found, but they left no evidence.”
Eijirou’s eyes softened, “Come here.” He scooted over to make room for Izuku, “Don’t stress too much about it. Things like this happen all the time, it's a hazard of the job,” he pressed a kiss to Izuku’s hair. “I’m all for getting criminals off of the street, believe me, but don’t treat this villain any different than you would another.”
Izuku opened his mouth to speak but Eijirou stopped him, already knowing what he was going to say. “It’s not different, Izuku don’t try to justify it.”
“But-”
Eijirou turned his head to capture Izuku’s lips in a kiss, ignoring the pain in his head from the motion. I haven’t kissed my boyfriend in two weeks, I can endure a little twinge.
