The Truth

The Truth

May 06, 2022

Adrien and I walked up the stairs to my sister’s bedroom.

I decided to leave the sleepover and tell Jolene before she found out another way. Adrien insisted on driving me home, so I rode home with him.

“You ready?” I said, turning to Adrien with my hand in a fist ready to knock on the door.

“As ready as I’ll ever be,” Adrien said, looking nervous.

I would be nervous too, if I had to tell my boyfriend I accidentally kissed their brother.

I then quietly knocked on the door.

“Come in,” I heard Jolene say on the other side of the door.

I opened the door and walked in with Adrien following right behind me.

“Adrien!” Jolene said, bouncing off her bed and flying across the room to hug him. “I missed you!”
“I actually have something to talk to you about,” Adrien said, sounding serious.

Jolene then pulled away from him and said, “Ok. What is it?”

“Well…,” Adrien started, turning towards me and then back to Jolene.

Jolene then crossed her arms, impatiently.

“I was talking to Dahlia and accidentally got lost in the moment and kissed her. Please, don’t get mad at her. It was my fault,” Adrien said.

Jolene dropped her arms and stared at Adrien with a sad look on her face.

“You cheated on me?” Jolene said, her voice cracking.

“Yes. I’m sorry. I understand if you don’t forgive me. I wouldn’t forgive myself either,” Adrien said.

Jolene quickly brushed off what Adrien said and hugged him.

“It’s ok. I understand,” Jolene said. “As long as we’re still together.”

“Actually…that’s what I wanted to talk to you about,” Adrien said.

Jolene then pulled away and stared at Adrien, confused.

“I heard about all the stuff you put Dahlia through and that’s not ok,” Adrien said, sternly.

I turned to leave the awkwardness of the room, but Adrien grabbed my arm making me stay.

“I don’t want to be with a girlfriend who treats people like that. I know what I did was unexceptable, but yours is too,” Adrien said. “I think we should break up. It’s over, Jolene.”

Jolene looked like her heart was just shattered into a million pieces. She quickly gathered herself and walked over to Adrien and slapped him hard on the face.

Adrien let go of my arm and touched his cheek.

Jolene turned to me and yelled, “This is all your fault!” She then turned back to Adrien.

“You will regret this! You will soon realize how worthless she really is! Just you wait! Now, get out of my room!”

I quickly grabbed Adrien’s hand and rushed him out of her room.

Jolene slammed the door behind us as I rushed Adrien to my room.

Adrien sat on my bed and stared at the floor with his hand on his cheek.

“I’m so sorry about your face. Do you want me to get you some ice?” I said, feeling bad about the whole situation.

I turned to leave, but Adrien grabbed my hand. Stopping me in my tracks. I turned to face him.

“I’m sorry about what Jolene said. You are not worthless,” Adrien said, looking at me with a sympathetic look in his eyes.

“It’s ok. I’m used to it,” I said, brushing it off.

“No,” Adrien said in a serious voice.

I froze.

“It’s not ok. You shouldn’t get used to it. It’s not healthy,” Adrien said.

“Really. I’m ok,” I said, trying to reassure Adrien.

He didn’t look reassured at all.

“I’ll go get you an ice pack,” I said, changing the subject. I began to walk away forgetting that Adrien was holding my hand.

Adrien pulled my hand towards him, making me follow it. He then turned me around and kissed me.

This kiss was different from the one earlier. This one was less passionate and more full of love and sympathy. It wasn’t any less great than the other one.

I pulled back and stared at Adrien who looked at me with a sympathetic look in his eyes.

“You should probably go. It’s getting late,” I said, changing the subject.

“You’re right. I should leave,” Adrien said, dropping my hand. He stood up and then walked out of my room.

“Bye. Thanks for everything,” He said as he walked down the stairs.

Do you ever feel like you don’t belong? Like no matter how hard you try, you’ll never fit in? Well, I do. Hi, my name is Dahlia Elyse Yates. Yes, the Yates. I’m in what most people call the “Perfect Family.”
My family is embarrassed of me. Why? Because I have heterochromia, which makes my eyes two different colors, and vitiligo, which makes my tan skin lose pigment in different places. My family finds it “not normal” or “unnatural.” They mostly call me things like "freak" and "weirdo."
And this is my story about how I learn to accept myself for who I am, against all odds.
