Gabby is right behind me as I head for the door. I act as though I'm not listening when Dr. Groth pulls her back to tell her something. I don't quite catch it. It's like they're speaking in code. I wonder if it's a pat on the back for how she pulled the wool over my eyes along with him or they've already forgotten about me.
When I get to the elevator, I notice there are no buttons for me to get myself out. Before I notice, Gabby taps the keycard reader to get the elevator to come.
"What do you guys do if there's a fire in the building? This can't be to code."
"Oh, we're fire-rated. Every room is contained, so a fire is very unlikely to spread from room to room."
"I'm sure the Fire Marshall wouldn't see it that way."
Gabby is quick to correct her nonchalant answer.
"We're up to code, I can assure you. We have fire exits and stairwells. The elevators immediately go to the ground floor in the event of a fire."
The elevator arrives and Gabby is quick to walk in, happy to end our small talk. I join and notice she's punched something into the console. Seems a little complicated to get to the ground floor.
The elevator doors close and we're headed in the wrong direction.
"Hit the wrong button there?" I ask, still trying to keep it light.
Gabby barely makes eye contact and I change my tone.
"What's going on, Gabby?"
"We just have to make one stop before we go."
I get close to Gabby, letting her know that I don't mind getting rough if she's not going to answer me straight. She starts to lose her cool, stepping back into the corner.
"Where are we going, Gabby?"
Before I'm able to get my hands on her, the doors open and I feel myself being pulled away. Two guards are dragging me out of the elevator. I try to fight them off, but they've got a pretty good grip.
"What the hell are you doing? I'm a police officer. Let go of me."
They don't say a word. I've given them their warning.
I stomp on one guard's foot and his grip loosens. I use my free hand to break the other's nose.
The one I stomped lunges at me, so I use his momentum to throw him down. I stomp him in the body once he hits the ground to make sure he doesn't get back up.
I feel the wind get knocked out of me as I hit the floor. The one with the broken nose kicked me in the stomach and now he's charging towards me to finish it.
I reach for my sidearm and notice it's not there.
I have to dodge the guard's foot as he throws it towards my face. I give his groin the best uppercut I can manage from my knees. He lets out a half-scream, half-whimper. It's more than enough to drop him in a weeping pile.
The stomped one is right behind him and throws a sweeping kick, which hurts my arms like hell when I put them up to block it. The force of the kick puts me on my back.
He throws an ax-kick towards my head, which makes it easy to roll away from. I spin and kick him in the back of the knee, causing him to drop to my level. I use one foot to push off and throw an elbow to his face. I feel something crunch, so I know it connected.
It's still not enough as he grabs me in a bearhug. I pull back with all my force and headbutt him right on the bridge of his already shattered nose. He lets me go and I jump to my feet. I kick him in the center of the chest so he falls back.
I'm ready to run with both of them on the floor when I see Gabby standing by the elevator. She's holding my gun - pointing it at me.
"Stop," She says with a shaky voice. She doesn't look like someone who spends a lot of time on the range. "Just stop and come with me."
"I'm not going anywhere with you. You're going to let me go back to my car and get out of here."
"No. You can't."
I'm slowly walking towards her as I say this. She notices.
"I said stop."
I put my hands up.
"What now?" I ask, looking her dead in the eye, waiting for my moment.
"You're going to stay right here until we're ready to move you."
"Then what?"
She says nothing. She stands straighter, confidence building.
One of the guards is shuffling back to his feet and, for a split second, Gabby looks away to see. I take the moment and charge towards her.
I drop to my knees as I feel a hot, stabbing pain through my stomach. I put my hands there to feel it. It's wet.
I've been shot.
