When my bare feet hit the freezing cold pavement outside, I feel little relief. They can still get to me out here. It doesn't help that I stand out a bit, wearing a hospital gown without shoes. Blood starts to pool on the ground. I've definitely popped some stitches.
Gabby's phone is still unlocked. I call Collins. It's the only phone number I can remember of someone who will actually be able to help me.
"Hello?" He says, unsure of why Nurse Gabby would be calling him.
"Collins. It's Rose. I need help."
"Holy- Rose, where have you been? I've been trying to-"
"Delcor. I'm at Delcor. They shot me and they were keeping me there. I escaped."
"What the hell? Escaped?"
I wipe sweat from my forehead. Even being practically nude, except for this thin gown in the middle of winter, it's getting really hot out. Adrenaline will do that to you.
"Yeah, can you come get me?"
"Rose, what's going on? Talk to me."
"Just come get me. I'm outside. I'll keep an eye out for you."
I ditch Gabby's phone in case they're tracing me through it and hide behind some cars across from the lab. I wait. No one is coming for me. No one is running after me.
It doesn't seem right.
After a few moments I accept that no one is trying to find me. I come out from behind my hiding place. Collins still hasn't arrived.
I look up at the lab and see Dr. Groth looking back at me from his window. He's smiling.
It's then I realize why they let me run...
I feel really hot.
